Default Combat magnum with strange crown.

Good evening. I have attached a photo of my new production combat magnum a crown or I suppose lack there of. It’s strange to me how the rifling pretty much comes out of the bore as more of a burr and it seems like there is no actual crown. There is a taper from the outside of the barrel diameter inward I guess Mabe that counts. But it seems like I could easily damage the delicate rifling protruding from the muzzle. I googled and googled and people don’t really take many picture close up of the front of these guns. Hopefully you can see in my pictures what I’m referring to. It just strikes me as odd.

That's the new 2 piece barrel, isn't it? Never seen one up close so I couldn't say if that was "standard" so to speak. If it does spray bullets instead of grouping them I would contact Smith to see what they say.

The recessed target crown is meant to protect the rifling from damage. Yours wasn't well executed. A trip back to the factory wouldn't be a bad idea unless you have the tools and ability to do it yourself. The crown or end of the rifling has a big impact on accuracy.

It doesn’t seem to be causing any accuracy issues just a head scratcher. From the couple of boxes I’ve put through it the thing is a laser beam.

I noticed the same thing when I bought my S&W 69 five years ago. I joined this forum to make a post here and ask if it was normal. It was. If you look at my first post in the link I have a close up. Surprised those pictures still work.

It is a side effect of the EDM rifling and doesn't hurt anything. But it bothered me as an aesthetic issue. I sent my gun back to S&W to have a different rear sight installed and asked them to recrown it while it was there which they did under warranty. It doesn't shoot any better but I like not seeing the burr.

Those pictures are almost identical! Unless I notice a drastic reduction in accuracy and can attribute it to the rifling becoming damaged I will leave it be. It doesn’t bother me as long as it works. It just struck me as odd and this being my first revolver I wasn’t sure if there was a logical explanation other than the bench dept took the day off.

Obviously you can't always count on Google.

I've posted pictures of my disappointing crowns many times here, often with before & after chamfering pictures.

It happens on broached rifling too. See 625 & 627 PCs.

Exactly, it's a side effect of lack of attention to detail & ultimately it matters.

Crowns should be smooth with each land & groove presented equally at the muzzle.

It's easily fixed. Whenever I've chamfered my crowns & forcing cones it's invariably made good shooters a little better.

Two piece barrels don't belong on a gun that isn't made to have it's barrel changed at will, like a Dan Wesson. The two piece barrel, the canted barrel a lot of new or late model S&W guns have, the ugly barrel shroud itself, and the lock nonsense, all add up to me saying, "Nope" to new S&W revolvers. I don't hate the presently made semiautos, but I'm not interested in buying them either. Just make, for example, a 628 or 627 that looks like an old blue one. It doesn't have to be pinned or recessed, just a one piece classic barrel, no lock, and a square grip frame. Price it even remotely well, and I'm getting my card out.
