I Think I Screwed Up
Was watching a 65-3...might have been a -2 3" barrel on GB last night.
Gun looked good, was a police trade in and the grips were rough.
Auction was over around midnight. When it got to min bid of $707 with 5 minuets left, I didn't bid. I figured the high bidder put in $750. With around anther $65 / $75 shipping and FFL I figured it wouldn't be worth it.
I did the right thing....right?
I hate/love looking at everyone's 3" K's, but maybe a deal will come around?

Probably depends on where you live but I don't know that you messed up. Guess how bad you want one would play into it as well.
I picked one up 4 or 5 years ago and paid around 650 to 700 for it by the time I was done. Sometimes I see them on here for less and I think I did bad and other times I see them for more and think I did okay.
Not sure you will find one cheaper on GB but keep your eye out here and on some of the non-auction sites and you might find a good deal.
Good luck.

Hard to say. If you feel bad because the bid went over what you were willing to pay, then NO, you did good. IF you feel bad because the gun sold for less than you were willing to pay, then Yes.
FWIW, I do allot of buying on various auction sites. Here is my learned (the hard way) rule of thumb that may help.
1) Do your research and figure out what the item on auction is worth to you well ahead (!) of auction close. This will keep you from making costly mistakes in the heat of the moment.
2) Subtract shipping, transfers and any other buried costs from that price to get your max/top bid. Once you have your max bid, don't ever exceed it.
If you follow these simple rules, you'll never feel bad about losing an auction because when you do, you KNOW it went for more than it was worth to you. When you win, you'll also know you didn't overpay.
hth
ps. Personally, I would have let that one go as well.

I always have a set price when it comes to auctions. I was set at $650 max.
I research everything before I buy. What something is worth to me, and what someone with too much money is willing to pay is the reason I've not replaced the 3 Pythons I had when I was a kid.
Anyone got a nice 64 or 65 3" they wanna sale!
Thanks!

Nice 65-3 on a site right now for $600, but local pick up only.

I watched it, too. If I could get a nice one at about $600 or less I would probably do it but close to $800 by the time all is done is too much for a gun that is very close to some I already have. Yes, it would look wonderful between my 65LS and my 3" 66 but I would rather focus on some stuff that I don't have with that $$.
When I have unlimited gun money I'll have a 3" 64 and 65!
Don't feel like you screwed up...you set a number and that's that. If you want to up your number on the next one at least you can take the time to make that decision instead of getting caught up in a bidding war on this one and regretting it later. Who knows how high it goes with you in the mix?

I would not mind a 3" Smith Revolver. My favorite snag would be a 13. Guns show when you least expect it. In March, I picked up a 66-2, 2.5". So it is a 1/2" short. Big deal! It is a nice shooting gun. I did have a 65-3, 3". Traded it off for a 586, 4" no dash. My introduction to L frames. Bob

Seems like that's the going price right now, at least on GB.
I put a wanted to buy ad on Florida Gun Trader, it's an online thing people post guns they want to sale or trade.
Did the same when I got my near mint 66-1 2.5" for $600 even, and my no dash 60 in the same condition with the correct box for I think $425.

They made a bunch of just about everything - no reason to go crazy on an auction and try to outbid someone with unlimited disposable funds.

Local sales require local guns and Florida seems to be a mecca!

Hey wood714 look on Grab a Gun they have pretty good prices! If you order one use discount code gagshipoff22 and that will take care of shipping cost. I don't work or have any association with the company, I'm just a normal guy that just ordered a Model 60 from them and it was way cheaper than Bud's Gun Shop!

A couple hours ago I called a guy that runs a tiny gun shop out of his detached garage. I'd bought a few guns from him in the past, and used him as my FFL.
He said he got a call from a dude selling his collection of guns, said he had a lot of Smith's. He's gonna call him and get back to me in a day or so about any SS 3" K frames.
I was telling him about wanting a Python and the prices people are asking. He told me he had a 6" SS with the box sit in his shelf for over 6 months, and finally sold it for $1,700.
Hell, I might luck into my lottery gun...4" SS Python too.

Now I think it was wise, but I ended up spending more on this superb condition 65-5 Lady!
Bought this from a forum member...money order is mailing out in the morning.
Kinda weird posting pics I didn't take of a gun that's not technically mine yet, but it will be soon. Not a fan at all of the bead blast look, but I'm 1000000% positive it will grow on me.
I'd polish her up, but know it would hurt the value.

The 3" revolvers have been the hot ticket for a number of years, and Smith and Wesson is not making any more of them. So, the demand currently exceeds the price. As we know prices generally don't decline as fast as they increase.
Right now $700 - $800.00 for a excellent condition 3" M-13 or M-65 is not out of line. I don't like it but that's what it is. If you really want one and can afford one, do it as soon as you can.

If it was in EXCELLENT condition then I might have gone for it, but if anything was not "as new", my opinion is that it was too high and you did the right thing.
