Default Brand New 586 oozing odd material from where barrel meets frame

Hi, this is my first time posting here. Wondering if someone may be able to help me figure out what is going on with my revolver.

A little background: I bought a brand new 586 in March which had timing issues and an odd blemish in the wood grip. The shop I purchased from swapped it for a new revolver. The next one had nicks in the barrel, as well as the cylinder, and the barrel was slightly twisted to the right. I called Smith and Wesson and they paid for shipping back to them for repair. I received my 586 back a few weeks ago. New cylinder, what looks to be new a barrel and new finish. Unfortunately the barrel still looks twisted to the right to me, and the sight seems off to the right as well, but I let it go. The reason for this post, and my main issue is that ever since I've had it back, every few days I've noticed this odd material is oozing out from where the barrel meets the frame. Ooze may not be the best word to describe it, because when I find it, it's dried and crusty. I've cleaned it off at least a dozen times. Only comes out of the right side. What's even more strange is that the finish looks like it has some problems in this area. I have not fired any rounds out of the revolver since Smith repaired it and sent back. I've called and sent a picture to Smith and Wesson, and they have replied saying I can send it back again. As much as I appreciate this, this is round 3 for me, and it's extremely inconvenient. Just looking for some opinions out there in the event I can bypass being without my revolver for 4/5 weeks again. I've waited my whole life to buy this classic revolver and just dropped a chunk of change on it. At this point, I'm extremely disappointed in the craftsmanship of this 586. Wasn't this supposed to be the top dog 357? Has anyone ever experienced this odd material on their revolver? Please see attached photo.

That looks like bluing salts! The last time I saw that was on a Ruger Security Six.

Whatever it is, is it discoloring the bluing around it? I'd surely send it back and get all the issues.

It is residue from the bluing process. I have had this appear on blue guns also. Apply oil on the residue and wipe it away as soon as you notice it. I applied oil on the junction between barrel and frame. The residue may reappear again. If so, repeat the process as necessary. I had to remove it several times before it totally disappears. It did not damage the finish on my revolver.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM, CHRIS. FIRST OF ALL, PLEASE UNLOAD ANY GUNS FOR PHOTO SESSIONS, UNLESS YOU MEAN TO ILLUSTRATE A PROBLEM RELATED TO THAT SUBJECT (WHICH YOU ARE NOT) THAT IS JUST A BASIC SAFETY CONSIDERATION, AND A PIC LIKE THIS PUTS AN NRA INSTRUCTOR LIKE MYSELF, ON THE HORRORS......

I AGREE THAT THE RESIDUE THAT CONTINUES TO APPEAR AT THE JUNCTURE OF THE BARREL AND FRAME IS RELATED TO THE BLUING PROCESS. IT WILL EVENTUALLY STOP............

SINCE THE REVOLVER HAS OTHER ISSUES AS WELL, I WOULD DEFINITELY SEND IT BACK. YOU DESERVE TO HAVE A PERFECT PRODUCT, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE OF THE AMOUNT OF TIME YOU HAVE YEARNED FOR ONE, AND THE CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT THAT YOU SPENT. UNFORTUNATELY, YOU WILL HAVE TO DELAY GRATIFICATION AGAIN, BUT IT WILL BE WORTH IT, IF YOU ARE FINALLY SATISFIED WITH YOUR NEW REVOLVER.......

AS I HAVE POSTED MORE THAN ONCE---SADLY, IT APPEARS THAT QUALITY CONTROL INSPECTION AT S&W, HAS INCREASINGLY BECOME THE JOB OF THE END USER. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR REVOLVER......

Good news - from the photo, the factory did a nice polishing/blue job.

Bad news - see above. You can try soaking/flushing out the threaded area of the frame repeatedly, but depending on the amount trapped in there the salts will likely continue to leach out until someone unthreads the barrel, cleans out the frame and shank thoroughly, and reassembles. Definitely a job for the factory (again). Sorry for your troubles.

Thank you all for the responses. It all makes sense. I will send it back to Smith so they can clean it up properly, as well as realign the barrel to my liking.

Also, I apologize for alarming anyone with the loaded photo. I always unload for any cleaning, inspection etc. I keep my revolver loaded, and when I happened to pick it up yesterday, I noticed the material again and didn't want to knock any of it off by popping the cylinder out or turning it over, so I carefully laid it across my lap for a photo.

Again, thank you for the responses!

Don't worry about your loaded gun photo. Guns don't shoot themselves nor can anyone be shot over the internet. If anything, going through the process of unloading and reloading just for a quick photo involves more gun handling, thus opportunity for an accident, than merely unholstering or grabbing a loaded gun out of the safe, safely positioning it to take a photo and then reholstering/storing the gun but apparently some don't think things through like this, see loaded gun and immediately think DANGER!

Not that there's anything wrong with a safety mindset but let's be smart about it.

You need to make a strong case for yourself when you call for your shipping label. Repeat this to them and make sure they hear it.
