Its up for sale but I know nothing about it, any help with value(98% condition), bbl. length, year made, rare? . I believe it is a target or hunter model. .44 Magnum is the caliber.

I am not familiar with this model of S&W, but I vaguely remember that style of adjustable front sight being promoted for competitors shooting IHMSA metallic silhouette matches. If memory serves me, that was back in the mid to late 1980s or 1990s.

The REAR SIGHT on the photo in your OP DOES NOT appear to be a factory item. Just thought you should be aware of this in case you hadn't noticed.

Thanks.

Could be a Millett rear sight, make the seller subtract $100. The value is somewhere in the $900 to $1200 area depending on where you live. You'll see them with asking prices up to $1500, but no one is buying at those prices.

That is the Model 29-3 "Classic Hunter." I have one and its a great hunting gun.

There has been a good deal of discussion about them over the years.

Some examples:

29-5 With adjustable front sight.

Model 29-3 Silhouette Opinions Needed

29-3 6" W/Adjustable Front Sight

It looks like a product code 101230. Lew Horton had 5,000 made in the late '80's to early '90's. Great gun and fairly common, they called it the Classic Hunter. The CH was a whole series with different models and barrel lengths.

As others have stated, a Model 29-3, from around 1988 (mine was 7/21/88).

It was known as the Classic Hunter, ant Shooting Times had a contest to give it that name.
