So my mom is getting up there....turns 75 this year. Her arthritis has gotten bad enough she cannot rack a slide easily anymore. Well she saw my S&W 67-5 I just got back from S&W for warranty work and she wants it.

She hates the stock rubber grips and the Altamont target conversions I bought for it are too big for her hands. So I dug out a Tyler T grip and some pearl panel grips from my parts bin from my FFL days/gun show trips and slapped this together. Kind of looks like an old fashioned 60's to early 70's pimp gun, but she likes it.

Being a former Sheriff deputy that carried a somewhat similar sized Colt Trooper in the day, she feels right at home with this. And I get her old, barely used 60's era Manurhin/Walther PP for trade in. She still had the box for it too...so I have a vintage gun to add to the collection or trade in on a pre lock Model 66 if I find one.

Outstanding! I bet your mom is a real hoot. My best wishes for her continued happiness, and a long and joyful life. If it's any consolation, I'm 61 and my arthritis is so bad that I'm almost exclusively a revolver man now.

I am 65 and moving to revolvers for a similar reason.

Well thank you for all the kind words regarding my mom. Now I just need to figure out what to get her for ammo. Looking at the Lucky Gunner labs results from the 38 Special tests, I am thinking the Winchester Train and Defend may be the right load for this gun. Should be light recoiling while still performing well in penetration and expansion. I can buy a box of the Train side of the product line to get her some practice.

If that works out all I may have to do is swap out a trigger return spring for something lighter. But since she didn't have a problem with the DA trigger on the Walther, the S&W should be okay. It is not quite as smooth and stacks a bit more than the Walther, but feels like it may be a couple pounds lighter.

Also I should say that I kind of owe her a gun. When I turned 21 back in 04 she gave me her nearly unfired Ruger Police Service Six snubbie and her Bauer Baby Browning copy pistol (also unfired). She said if I shot them well, to keep them, or just trade them in and get something else.

Well the Bauer was so finicky and it was 25acp, so I traded it in on a Walther P38 (commercially marked P1) and the Ruger got traded in on a larger 6 inch Security Six.

Good for you, I like it when family takes care of family.

Your elderly mom might appreciate some old school ammo. I've been thinking about loading my 4" K-frame with Buffalo Bore 158 grain LSWCHP – the standard velocity version – for home defense. Rated at 850 fps in a snub nose and just under 1000 fps in a 4" K-frame according to the BB website. That's just about perfect in my book. No need for +p at all – at least not in a home defense scenario, which I presume is what your mom is concerned about. "Out and about" might be a different story.

Underwood Ammo is also good and generally a better deal. But their 158 grain LSWHP loads are moving a bit slower than Buffalo Bore's. Underwood's sales rep told me that their reported velocities of 854 fps for the standard pressure load and 1000 fps in +p for 38 special are based on a 4" barrel. In that case I think I would still prefer the standard pressure load in a 4" barrel for less noise and recoil indoors, but the +p version for a 2" snub nose (even that would likely be very loud indoors).

I saw the TNOUTDOORS9 test on the Buffalo Bore and it left me unsure. It had good penetration but only so so expansion. I am not sure if they are using a harder lead for the bullet. Of course it is a sample size of one. I picked up some of the Winchester Train and Defend 130gr JHP. It says it clocks at 900fps and I am assuming that is a 4 inch test barrel. It is also standard pressure and low recoil so I think it should serve well in a heavy all steel K frame.

At 70 revolvers are what I started with in 1968 and are second nature to me. My agency transitioned to the Glock 23 about 10 years before I retired but a J frame is my EDC.

What would we do without tnoutdoors9? I really appreciate the effort he puts into his channel. If I remember right, the hollow point was clogged with demin after that particular test. So the poor expansion and very deep penetration in the block of gel were not unexpected. I guess that's typical snub nose performance. However, unless I'm mistaken, you'd have to hit someone right on the chest pocket flap of their demin jacket to snag four layers of denim. Not many people wear demin jackets or shirts or present a similarly tough target such as the IWBA protocol that tn9outdoors follows would suggest. Though I guess it really depends on the part of the country and time of year. Where I live in SW Florida, ballistics gel with one layer of t-shirt would be more like it pretty much year-round. I think I'm the only person who even occasionally wears a denim jacket.

I'm sure most defensive ammo works well enough most of the time. The key is that you have to have confidence in whatever you choose. Given the rash of daytime break-ins currently in my neighborhood (and a mysterious "visitor" ringing my doorbell at 1 a.m. a couple weeks ago), bullet effectiveness is definitely on my mind these days.

I'm sure the Winchester T&D works fine, though the combination of both light-for-caliber and slow is not to my taste. If it were me, I'd definitely try to find out for sure what barrel length Winchester used to chrono that ammo at 900 fps – or chronograph it myself.
