Default M-57 Old or new?

OK so I have found a NIB 6" classic 57-6 at LGS that has a decent grain pattern on the grips and nice bluing for a "current" Smith. Always wanted one to shoot and to drool over. I CAN live with the lock cuz on a blued N frame it doesn't stand out and doesn't change the radius of the frame around the hammer.
The dilemma is that I always wanted an older 57 or 57-1 too, but can NEVER seem to find one in decent shape (shooter+) for under $1000 or more.

Should I buy the New version?

What is the asking price? I've got a 2nd year 6" and a 4" 57-1. I like both though the 57 does have more features I like such as the pined barrel, coke bottles, etc., but the 57-1 is no slouch either. Haven't looked at a newer 57 with lock, MIM, etc., but if the price is right you gotta start some where.

I found a decent 6" 57-1 here on the forum for $700 plus shipping. Patience. Keep looking and you should be able to find a decent shooter+ for under $1000.

I would go for the new one now. I have had very good experiences with all my newer S&W revolvers.

I have looked at a lot of the new S&W revolvers in the last couple of years and, though I dislike the stocks they are supplying, the revolvers themselves look good to me. I don't care for the lock mechanism, but that feature is not a deal-breaker to me. I'm more interested in how well the gun shoots and how well it stands up to use.

I have been wanting to give one a try so naturally if you decide on the new one I hope you come back and tell us about it. I think they are worth a try. One of our most knowledgeable members and collectors here owns and shoots a Model 29-10 and has commented favorably on it. You can be assured he knows a thing or two about S&W revolvers.

There was a good shooter on this forum (yesterday I think) for 850.00. I was close, but had already put money down on a custom job so my "new gun" money was already gone.

Default update...

Found a 6" 57-2 in great shape. Only question is she was drilled and tapped for scope through top strap of frame. Clean, straight and professional job by appearance. This process affect strength in any way? I wouldn't think so, but need some feedback please?

I wouldn't think so either. The topstrap is machined to receive the rear sight. After all,the pressure is contained within the cylinder. But I must admit that I'm no specialist.
