I realize it's a rookie question but I want to get this right. Shortly after purchasing this kit gun in the mid 80's I put the original grips in the box, put on the Pachmayer's, and never looked back. This shoots as straight as I can shoot my K22. Much credit to the rubber grips.

But I'm a traditionalist and I really want S&W wood back on this revolver. So my question is, between ebay and classifieds here, what are the S&W J-frame options that are wood and more hand filling then the stock grips. If there's nothing that will fit the bill then I'll stick with the Pach's. But I'd like to put some S&W wood on them. Appreciate any insight.

The J Frame Target stocks are more hand filling than the original stocks and came in both checkered and smooth finish.

I think the "traditionalist's" approach is to the use the stocks that came with the gun. I used to fool around with big stocks on kit guns and after years and years finally got over that and went back to the factory magnas. Might give it a try for a while. .22s don't need "hand-filling" stocks to handle recoil. There is none. It's just a matter of getting used to the smaller pattern.

See, I already learned from your comments. I'll now search for J frame targets. As for the original's, well that's another story. The box and grips were left with a sibling in Wyoming and God only knows if they're still around...the box and stocks, not my brother.

But I really do want a bigger grip than the originals as I want every advantage I can get while shooting. The Pachmayr's are awesome but I want the look and "originality" of Smith and Wesson wood.

Here is my Model 63 with factory Smooth Target Stocks. I like them better than the Magnas because they fill in the space behind the trigger guard which for me is much more comfortable. The interesting thing about these types of stocks is that they are frequently found made from very nicely grained Goncalo Alves and they don't run $150+ like K or N frame Goncalo Alves smoothies.

If your sibling still has the stocks considering asking him to mail them to you and order a Tyler T-grip (or equivalent).

OK. If you can get along with that red ramp front sight I guess the big stocks aren't anathema.

Talking of that, have you seen SuperMan's Model 63 with the black front blade? I have been green with envy ever since...

If you have large hands, the Herrett's Shooting Stars might suit you best.


I did not like the sharp heel on the Herrett stocks and replaced them with a set of factory J frame target stocks. These are made to fit RB and SB guns, come smooth or checkered. I have a set of smooth targets on one of my 31-1 revolvers.


There are also J frame combats, I had a set on a nickel 34 years ago and the finger grooves did not fit my hand as well as the targets.

Added the Herrett's SS's to my "new to me " 4"63 they feel good ....... range trip!!!

Want to buy them or trade me out of them? I no longer use them. These would be fine stocks if the bottom were beveled all the way around; like the old Colt Trooper stocks were shaped.

I like the Combat style on my 63-3.

I've got the original SB Magna's on mine with Tyler T. No need for big rubber grips on a 4" .22 as there is no recoil to speak of. They are available on fleabay, GB, Gun Shows, parts guys, auctions here on the Forum from time to time, etc.

I consider this a very good option. But I can really shoot that 63 with the full sized grips. Combats it will be.

The round butt in the photo is a M631 that came new from S&W with the combat grips. I liked them so much that I just had to get a set for my M63 as well! Some claim that the finger groves don't fit their hands but they are perfect got me.

For me ( average size hands ) the fits like a glove combo is square butt magnas with a Tyler t

I like the smooth targets as shown on my M34 but have a set of stocks I found in a "junk" box at a gun shop a number of years ago that I like better on my M63.
