Default Which revolvers came with combats?

I have an unusual problem. I have acquired 3 sets of N frame combat stocks but I don't own any round-butt revolvers. What models should I be on the lookout for?
Thanks in advance. Scott.

Magna classic 29 and 629 came with N frame rb grips, I believe the 627 no dash, a version of the 610... I would guess there were quite a few actually...

I'm sure a lot of people will chime in here.

Finger groove round butt Combat Stocks for the N-frame:
Model 24-3
Model 25-3 - possibly other variations? (edit thanks to k22fan: very unlikely)
Model 29-3 "Lew Horton Special" 3" barrel
Model 29-4 with 3" barrel did not come with Combat grips.
Model 29-5 .44 Classic Dx
Model 29-5 Magna Classic
Model 29-6 Slabside
Model 327 but they were not the traditional Combats as I think of them.
Model 610
Model 624 "Lew Horton" 3"
Model 625-4
Model 627 - one model with "8x" on the side of a slab side barrel had Combats but looks like a different type of wood than traditional Combats.
Model 629-1 "Lew Horton" 3" barrel (possibly referred to as Lew Horton Carry Comp?)
Model 629-3 Mag Comp II
Model 629-3 Magna Classic
Model 629 Classic DX - listed as "combat grip made from Morado wood"
Model 657 - made in 1986 - I cannot confirm if it came with finger groove Combats but I think it did?
Model 657-4 was made with 3" barrel in 1998 for Lew Horton - I cannot confirm if it was available with finger groove Combats.

I have an unusual problem.

I don't see any problem.
Sell those and get another square butt.

I usually buy a revolver I like first then find the stocks later, but your way works too.

From memory I can make a few corrections to this list.

The Model 25-3 was the 10,000 (minus the small number of them that were fancy engraved 25-4s) .45 Colt 125th Anniversary Commemoratives made in 1977. They were square butt and came with Presentation Stocks (smooth Target Stocks) that were cut away to expose the commemorative stamp on the side plate.

While all the 3" round butt N frames ordered by Lew Horton during the 1980s including 624s came with Combats 4" and 6" 624s made about 1986 were square butt and came with targets. The first 625s were dash 2 and came with rubber grips, Pachmyrs if I recall correctly. 625-3s in all 3 barrel lengths also came with rubber as did .45 ACP 625-4s.

By the time 610s came out S&W was out of the early style Combats and had switched to flat sided Combats made of Pau Ferro which S&W called Morado. (Both names might be spelled wrong.) They ran out of those later in the 1990s then started out sourcing to Altamont. Early 629 DXs came with the flat sided Combats, later ones Altamonts.

The supply of early style K/L frame Combats lasted much longer than the N frame size. The last of them were shipped on 2 1/2" 686-3s. There were no flat sided ones because by time S&W ran out of them they were already buying from Altamont.

I warned that's from memory. I'll be happy to be corrected.

There were N RB combats made after 198x(?) that did not have the silver washers.Maybe at around the same time that they were eliminated from the target grips.

Funny, was at a gun show this morning and found a 25-13 mountain gun wearing vintage combats - I know it didn't come with them. Asking $825, got it for $750 with the intent of keeping the grips and flipping the gun - or sell both separately.

These so called stocks should be sent to me for further inspection to determine the fitment on round butt N frame units. Proper alignment techniques may take decades to analyze the difference between genuine articles and fakery. Please be patient during this time as I have been undulated with many such procedures as of late. ...Tuco says shoot

Are you sure those are S&W made Combats? The look too short and flat on the bottom to me. Also they appear to have an oil finish rather than the original's varnish.

Thanks for making my list more accurate.

The 25-3 referenced in my post above is the 1977 version referenced in the SCSW 4th edition ".45 acp 3" round butt version manufactured for Lew Horton. Approx 100 manufactured." I am not certain it came with finger grove Combat stock but it's possible. I cannot confirm this. I think the 1977 date seems too early to have Combats but with S&W anything is possible. I will edit my post to clarify it's unlikely.

In addition there is a reference to a 25-2 3" Lew Horton .45 acp in an old GunAuction but there are no pictures and I cannot confirm if it had Combats but it seems too early to have had Combat grips.

They look like all my other factory combats, including the hand written number and stamp on the inside. I've had some that are glossy and others that are matte. Should all vintage combats be glossy?

Thanks for the comprehensive list. Unfortunately the Australian government considers 3" barrels too dangerous for law-abiding citizens to possess, so I'll have to search for 4" barrelled revolvers (or longer). Cheers. Scott.

Well, there's still hope as the below models were available in barrel lengths greater than 3":
Model 29-5 .44 Classic Dx (5", 6.5", 8-3/8" barrels)
Model 29-5 Magna Classic (7.5" barrel)
Model 29-6 Slabside (5-3/8" Performance Center - very pricey)
Model 610 (5", 6.5" barrels)
Model 629-3 Magna Classic (7.5" barrels)
Model 629 Classic DX - listed as "combat grip made from Morado wood" (6.5", 8-3/8" barrels)

I hope you have at least $3,000 to complete that trifecta. Actually, isn't there a nice 624 on here for well under a grand?
