Default Update on 624 3 inch.

Contacted Lou Horton, they said while it is in the right range it was not one of theirs. Now I am really confused since this was the only source I could find. The man I talked to said could be a special order. I guess a letter is the only way to find out. Comments or suggestions?

Lew Horton was one of many distributors at the time, so it is very possible a different distributor ordered a run, or Smith & Wesson made some more off the Lee Horton and just shipped them out.

I don't think you need to Letter the gun per se, as it would not be worth more or less based on being a Lee Horton ordered gun.

I purchased a 3" model 629 that was reputed to be on of a short run for Lew Horton. A call to them with the serial number showed that it was not a Lew Horton. Further exploring showed that S&W made an over run that sold well so they named it the back packer and made something like 5000 of them. Possibly they did the same with the 624. Someone will come along with better information shortly.

The model was a Lew Horton exclusive for some time but towards the end of the run, S&W sold the remaining guns that LH didn't want to other distributors.

Only a factory letter will state which distributor it went to.

I have read several periodicals back then that stated Lew Horton couldn't take all 5,000 of them so S&W sold the balance through their normal distribution network. Dunno how accurate that was.

They are certainly nice little sixguns. Those of us who have one are lucky.

Yes. Same for 24-3 3" and 629/29 3" guns.

I wouldn't spend $75 just to know it went to Grandma's Hardware Store, but it's your money. You have a great gun no matter who handled it along the way.

Curiosity may not have killed the cat, but I think it may be costing me $75.00

For that $75 I can make 13-14 boxes of 44 Special reloads.
