I would say S&W never shipped that rod which looks like an extension rather than the correct rod with a looped end.

S&W eliminated the loop some time in the 1980's

It's definately not an extension, the straight knurled end is closed. This came from one of my S&W pistols (I cannot remember which one), and the package is sealed.

I've never seen a straight rod shipped with a S&W. I'd say it's either an after market kit or a production mistake. Sure looks like an extension rod to me.

It is a S&W rod. I have one just like it but cannot remember which Smith it came with. I used all mine so no telling where it started out.

I believe they came with the Ladysmith (maybe other J Frames too) in the hard plastic box. Look at the narrow compartment in the box in the photo.

I've got a straight rod with knurled end that came with my 617 no dash in the very early 1990's.
