Being a later generation drilled & tapped gun, I would think a rear sight assembly should be available from the factory? Call the factory and give them the ser. # and 586 dash #.

Larry

You may also wish to look on ebay. I have seen them there in the past. Bob

With only one post, people are making a lot of assumptions about the OP. He may have no idea what we're talking about. Maybe this will help. Up to, and including, the 586-3, the gun used a square-tang rear sight (top picture). These are no longer available from the factory and you need to find one in the secondary market - eBay is a good source. However, there are a couple variations based on hole placement. Elevation screw to front mounting hole.

From the 586-4 on, the current round-tang sight is used (bottom picture) and is still available from the factory. The height of the sight blade will vary from model to model, but sight blades can be changed regardless whether you have a square or round tang.

I think people assumed that it was a 586-4 or higher because of the statement about a scope being mounted - concurrent with the sight change, the top strap of the frame was drilled & tapped at the factory. But, there are many optics-mounted guns that pre-date the factory D&T.

As an alternative, if you have a square tang, Bowen makes their Rough Country sight with a blank tang that can be drilled to the proper dimensions by your gunsmith.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

I agree with Larry, call Smith customer service and see what they can do for you, they'll need the model # (ie: 586 or 586-1 and etc.) and the serial number. This way if they have the sight you're sure to get the correct one.

Thanks everyone for the info. I will try calling Smith and see if they can help me. The model doesn't have a - after the 586. So I'm assuming it's a just a 586

Then it would have had a square-tang sight. Also, there is an active recall on that gun. If yours does not have an "M" stamped next to the model/serial number, under the yoke, then it has not been done. No biggie - search 586 recall and then decide if you wish to have it done.

Adios,

Pizza Bob
