The latest publication of the "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" by Jim Supica and Richard Nahas states a value guide of $400.00 when in Very Good Condition. This is the 4th Edition published in 2016.

Most trade hands for $550 to $700 in the real world. One marked "CS-1" in the yoke cutout will easily fetch north of $1,000. I'd buy every one I could for $400. That's the Disinterested Recent Widow price.

Agree with the Kernel, but - and I say but you stated in very good condition without pictures. That condition statement is below excellent condition. It is in the eyes of the beholder.
You also stated - what should I offer. Always offer significantly less than you expect to end up paying. I purchased my 686-1 in 2011 for $440.00 and would rate it closer to excellent condition.

Nice Kernel; another new pricing model.......
I would call anything under $500 on a 686 in good condition; "Friends and Family pricing"
LOL get a copy of the SCS&W to show to your "friend" when you make him that $400 offer!!!!!!! The Catalog will be free and you'll still have $$$$s left over to take the wife out for a nice dinner, with wine, while you justify the purchase!!!!
Depending on the local market (they do vary) it could very well be a $550-700 gun. Maybe a bit more in Calf,Conn(?) and Mass......

Good luck on your offer. A 4 inch 686 is a very desirable gun, especially if it retains the original stocks. And I agree, that $500 is a very nice price for one in excellent condition with OEM stocks. I'd never let my 4 inch 686-3 go for that.

For a VG condition 4" M686 "no dash", anything below the cost of a current production 4" M686, is a very good deal.
Last time I checked, S&W is no longer producing pre-lock / pre-mim, L frame revolvers. Assuming proper care, & maintenance, can't see one of these gems ever losing value.

If it comes with Combat Grips in excellent condition, those are worth $225-300 by themselves.

The Kernel's "disinterested recent widow" remark got me thinking about how you find an apartment in NYC, go through the obituaries. That would probably work in the gun market also.

Something else to consider on the Early 686 No Dash. I purchased my 6" Adjustable Front sight in Sept 1986. Shortly thereafter there was a recall due to, If my memory serves me, due a locking up issue with hot ammo. After the gun was returned on the crane cut out below the serial number there is an M stamped. If looking to purchase a 686 No dash the presence of the M would be desirable. FWIW I gave $290 plus 17.80 Tax and no it's not For Sale Don't ask.

Priced at $1000. No offers - No haggling - No interest ...
NOT AN OFFER TO SELL - Just for information.

Sounds like the classic ......
Wife told him to "sell some of those D--- guns we need to remodel the bathroom!".
"But Honey, I tried at X different gun shows ...... no one seems to want this one.... what can I do?"

I was at Wannenmacher show in Tulsa last fall. Guy had a 686-ND, in box, sign on it claimed unfired.
I asked the price, the guy sez "$1200". I just blinked and looked at him.
He sez "$1000".
I walked away. No offer, no haggling, no interest.
