Default Mod.642 Performance ctr UPDATE range report post 20

I just got back from my local gun shop.
I bought my first Performance center gun. a model 642-1 no lock . It's cut for moon clips and has a action job also has rosewood inserts into the rubber grips and the cylinder flutes are polished. I got it for $500.00 otd a standard one listed for $419.00 so I'm happy. I loved my standard 642-1 that I sold in a moment of weakness . I'll try to post pictures in a day or so.

I have the same model, it is a wonderful gun. I tossed the moon clips back in the box as I have no use for them. The action is super smooth and the grips are attractive and well shaped. It will be enjoyable to shoot. You made a good choice.

Bob - pardon my ignorance, but is your 642 recent production or new/old stock? The reason I ask is because I just saw that recent J-frames have MIM barrels. 642 I have not, but 637 and 442 I have ... . The barrels on mine don't look MIM but, again, I admit my ignorance on this MIM-barrel business. Either way, Congrats on your purchase!

I tried the moon clips that came with the gun and my luck they sent 3 for a 7 shot gun. I called S&W I should be receive them in 10 days . When on the phone I asked about ordering more but was told it was over $70.00 FOR 6 I TOLD THEM FORGET IT !!!!
I checked Brownell's site and they have them for $32.00 for 6.
Once I get the correct one's from S&W I'll decide if I really need them.

GeoJelly your question got me wondering so I went to S&W's web site .They say the bbl. and cylinder are both stainless.

I see some of you are not using the moon clips or think they are useless! I would think that having the clip on the first 5 rounds (that are in the gun)would be a good idea as to help with extraction and the not using them and then not using them on your reload as a speed loader would be better...

I would think that they would help in this case???

btw OP, that is a sweet 642 pc gun..

I do have a question for you guys and the original poster, is there a model number specific for this gun without the lock in it? I see some that have the IL and some that do not like yours, what was the model number on your box this gun came in?

I have seen some advertised on GB with an IL ans some without so there has to be a specific model number on the no lock versions so I know when I want to get mine. Thanks ,

Eagle1: The SKU number for the 642 in question is 10186, taken directly from the box label. It is a PC model.

As to the moon clips, I've been carrying revolvers into all sorts of terrible places for too many years. No clips for me, thank you. Just something to gum up the works, IMO.

Thanks but I see them advertised as "model II" on GB, just wondering if that has something to do with the IL model and the non lock model... Example below...Thanks.

And the here is a pic of one that has an IL

Kaaskop49 has it correct the box said sku 10186 and PC M642 tuned action Model 642-1
The shop I got this one from had the PC model listed for $519.00 and the standard model listed for $419.00 So when he told me $500.00 otd I thought it was a good deal for the tuned action and extra bling. Both had no locks.

Let me put this matter "to bed." I have both 642 variants. BOTH are PC models. Confusing, I know. Good shooting!

Nice 642, I work on a Military post and the PX can order me one for $470, but seeing that on the 16th they're have a sale they have a 642, it's not a pro or performance ctr, just reg 642 for $400 plus 10% off and also SW revolvers have a $30 mail in rebate for Active/Retired Military! Can't beat that!

Well I got to the range today. I shot some Buffalo Bore Standard pressure 158 gr. LSWCHP and some 125 gr JHP. Hornady Critical Defense standard pressure also shot some 158 gr. LFN Winchester cowboy loads.
I was only shooting at 7 yards as my range go's from 7 yards to 25 yards. The best I did was with the Hornady 125 gr. load about a 3" group but the Buffalo Bore was about a 4" group.
The Buffalo Bore seemed to recoil a lot more than the Hornady load.
So I may be switching to the Hornady load for the faster 2nd shot.
But I'm very happy with the new gun.

Sureshotbob, really nice gun. I to think anything beyond one loaded moonclip is unnecessary. If you decide moonclips are the way to go check with Ranch Products. I have not purchased any recently but a couple of years ago they were 1/10th the cost of anywhere else I could find them.

As a 640 Pro owner, here is my view on the moon clips...

The moon clips allows me to quickly and efficiently eject and insert five rounds at one time. However, I find the moon clips are too easily bent for me to trust them as spare rounds for defensive carry.

Additionally, they are an "all or nothing" proposition. You lose the option to top off a couple of rounds without dumping everything and recharging all five holes. This likely isn't an issue for competition use, but may be an issue for some in a defensive role.
