Default 25-9 in 45 Long Colt - Model of 1989 - Grips added

A friend of mine got in touch with me regarding a few revolvers he wanted to part with. This one caught my attention when he mentioned the model number, what it looked like, and what it was chambered in. I think he may have been misinformed that it was chambered in 45acp, when it appears to be product code 100924. 45 Long Colt.

I have no clue what grips were offered on these and when I saw it, I thought it was peculiar to have the Pachs. After cleaning throughly, even though it didn't really need any its in great shape with super tight lockup and mechanicals. It has a touch of freckling on the side plate which doesn't bother me much with the overall finish looking as good as it does. 5 inch, matte finish, unfluted cylinder, no lock. Be still my heart. BFM serial, so 1991? Does anyone have production numbers?

I've become fascinated with 45 revolvers, and this one was too good to pass up. I paid probably what its worth right now but hey, its going to be an excellent shooter. Its my first revolver in 45 LC, and I think I started out right. As my father would say, if you're gunna be a bear, be a grizzly.

The clean look of the frame sure makes me think that could be right.

My 25-5 in .45 Colt was a grail gun; I removed these stocks to put elk bone on this gun but this is how it came originally.

It was my understanding that these -9's were cobbled together with leftover parts but I want to say that all but one -7 and -9 I've seen while searching the internet have hogues, there was 1 with pachs. I also find it interesting that the frame is rollmarked instead of the same gold etching thats on the barrel.

Could this be in 45 acp? Or some sort of custom order?

Nice 45 to start with.

Probably end up being one of the most accurate firearms you'll own.

Mine's a -7 and it's the one I shoot when I need to make myself think I can shoot.

I have to admit, I'm a little envious of that one.

Congratulations!

My 25-7 came with Hogue grips. I am the original owner and the product code is 100924.

It is a great gun, and extremely easy on the eyes. The 5" barrel is about perfect on an N frame.

Enjoy it,
Russ

It is a marvelous gun to have and shoot; black is beautiful, 45 Long Colt, 5 inches is just right. Not many out there so each one is a treasure.

Fits in nicely with my other 5 inch large caliber.

oh... not for sale.

Check the cylinder throat diameter. Most 25s in 45 Long Colt are .454-.455"..
Terrible accuracy using .452" bullets. The common diameter offered...
If it's not accurate, it's just a pretty T O Y..

Not an issue with the -7 & -9.

Not even an issue with a -5.

These shoot like a laser with .452 bullets.

Snapping Twig is correct. I had two 25-7s, which is simply the 25-9 before some small modification. They were anything but a "pretty toy". I sold both of them (sigh) to members of this forum.

The 25-7s and 25-9s are about as close to the perfect .45 Colt revolver as I've run across. The 5-inch barrel was perfect for me. It seemed to give a balance to the big N-Frame that a longer or shorter barrel does not. The only .45 Colt revolver I could shoot better than the 25-7 was an Old Model Ruger Blackhawk single-action. I can't think of another double action revolver in .45 Colt that I'd rather have. No, not even one of the newer Rugers.

If I ever have the spare money again, I'll have me another 25-7. I have a special pair of smooth footballs just waiting in the drawer for one.

No, the 25-9 was not "cobbled together" using spare or leftover parts. The guns went from a 25-7 to a 25-9 due to an engineering change. The 25-9 got a stronger cylinder stop bolt, and the cylinder stop notch was changed accordingly.

There was also supposedly something about an "enhancement package", but I have no idea what that might have entailed.

The 25-7s and 25-9s shipped from the factory with Hogues...the Monogrip, I think it's called. A genuine pain to deal with, and ugly as sin in the bargain. The Hogues disappeared from my guns soon as I found real grips to replace them.

I recall seeing somewhere, almost certainly here, that the 25-9 got the same enhancement package that started on the .44 Magnum models. For my money, this is the peak of the 45 Colt revolvers from S&W. I can't think of an objective reason to get/have one, and can think of lots not to, but I still think it is my most likely next irrational purchase if one becomes available at the right time.

I am lucky to own both a-7 and -9. I can not tell the difference in accuracy between the two. They are both extremely accurate.

Well, I've shot a few boxes of Blazer 45 LC JHP and I'm in love. As others have mentioned, this revolver is a lazer. The 5 inch is so well balanced. Recently, I found a NIB Hogues with a nice grain to them snagged them. I like the color orange a lot and I thought it would set off the matte finish nicely. They offer good control while shooting as well, I hope they hold up for a long time.

I would have gladly traded my Model 625 in .45acp for his Model 25-9 Long Colt! The Model 25 whether in .45acp or .45LC has been an itch I've been trying to scratch for years! But they've been going for $1300+ in my area, when you can find them; and that's a big when... I finally settled on a 625 Jerry Miculek version in .45acp. What sold me on it was the owner of Buffalo Bore, Tim Sundles informed me I could shoot .45Super out of this pistol all day... Enough about mine though. OP, beautiful revolver. Swap out those hideous grips for a pair of wood from Ahrends or Altamonte and enjoy that pistol. Whatever you paid for it I'm sure you got it at a wonderful deal. I can't even obtain one in North Georgia!

I have had revolvers refinished by both Ford's and S&W. I was satisfied with both companies. Ford's will take a bit longer and since Horace and Larna are transistioning the operation to their children the quality may not be the same. Below are examples of each: First is a model 10-6 done with S&W standard blue. Second is a model 29-2 done in Ford's bright high polish blue.

CONGRATULATIONS on a great gun. I am sure it is a shooter. I really like the grips too. I'm a big fan of the 45 Colt cartridge in any gun, Smiths included. Don't plan on parting with any of mine. Enjoy.

I think your gun (very nice, BTW) is a 25-7.
My 25-9 came with fluted cylinder and football target grips.

There was a run of 25-9's made as the Model of 1989 with the unfluted cylinder, and there were fewer 25-9's that came after with fluted cylinders (like ours, mine shown above). I am in the market for a 4" 25-9 with a fluted cylinder.

Back in the day, there was more than one 45 colt cartridge.

One was short, one was long.

Today people don't know this and chastise those of us who do know this and prefer to call it by the old name.

Yes, Long Colt.

Funny, my 25-5 had .457-.458 throats, had Smith install a new cylinder, now it's .4525; my 25-9 came with .4525-.453 throats.
Neither one shoots very well, as both are thread choked.

What is the caliber stamped on the side of the barrel? Mine says 45 Colt.

What does "thread choked" mean?

Nowadays they say Long Colt to distinguish between the .45 Colt and the .45 ACP. The debate about history will go on forever...many of my reloading manuals say "Long" Colt is an inaccurate term that was never officially adopted. Whatever the truth, it is one of my favorite calibers (plus the .41 magnum). Just agree to disagree.

By the way, Photobucket worked when I posted above...now it doesn't.

Ain't it a shame S&W makes all N frames in round frames now? Owners have top buy a set of grips to change them out?

Yes, Long Colt.
Well, to be pedantic, you are wrong.
There was never a .45 Colt short.
You are referring to the .45 S&W Shofield, which chambers in a .45 Colt.
People who don't know this use the term .45 Long Colt.

As I've heard the term Long Colt used, it prompted me to check. So just sharing what I've found...

.45 Colt - Wikipedia

Which is it: .45 Long Colt or .45 Colt?

OK - here's the straight skinny.
Wyatt Earp went to the store for a box of .45 Colt's.
The clerk handed him Shofields.
Wyatt said: "No, the long ones, you dummy!"
Thereafter, they became the "long Colts".

If'n a gazillion people use a certain term, that doesn't make it correct.

May be widely used and accepted but not correct. As there's no ".45 Short Colt", it's somewhat similar to the term 7.62 Rimmed/Russian (7.62x54R) and 7.62 Russian Short (7.62x39).

Ah, the terminology police
Stocks-grips.. Ya ya just grab em and hold on
Pistol-revolver revolvers were called pistols long before anybody mad a semi auto and still can be
gun-rifle, if you have a gun and are a terminology purist you better have a stamp from the BATF for it
hand-pawl, funny hand that only has a thumb and acts just like a pawl
crane-yoke, what ever the yoke cranes the cylinder out of the pistol.

Good language, is the ability to communicate your thought and have everyone left with a understanding and feeling comfortable with the subject. Corrections on ever little term are NOT polite or necessary.

No that you all have my 2 cents worth I am going to go blast some flame and noise out of my miniature cannon gun, whatever.

Happy 4th to every whether your lucky enough to own a 45 long Colt or not.. I have several.

45 Colt-45 long Colt, round for pistol guns, no mater what you call it

I also put some new shoes on my 25-9. Smooth bacote Farrants

Right or wrong, .45 “Long Colt” has been used for so long that it’s use is
colloquial.
