Default Seeking Serial # Ranges For M-64(-5) DAO .38 SPL.

Hello Guys, I'm attempting to verify which serial number range my particular 'NY-1' style Model 64-5, 4" HB, RB, DAO falls into ? Initially, when purchased I assumed it was from the NY-1 contract, but after a bit of investigation, I don't think it is. I now feel that it's probably part of a Brinks, or similar type contract. I base this on the following; NO laser etched serial # mkgs, NO NY-1 mkg in crane, & finally, it doesn't exhibit that NY-1 style bead blasted finish on it. Other than those features, & or lack of, it is in all other respects an NY-1 M-64. ( My M-64-5 is Serial # BET-15XX. I also have mine's box label data if anyone's interested, just let me know. ) I've noted a few Forum threads here pertaining to some Brinks contract pieces, but none of which ever mentioned their example's serial # ranges. So, if anyone happens to have one of these Brinks example, I'd be most appreciative if they would be kind enough to share their number ranges with me. Also, if anyone has an original issue box with theirs, I' love to know the 'box label data' as it appears from S&W. Yes, I know I could just order a factory letter, & will probably do so in the near future. But for the moment, I'd like to see what I can turn up here on the Forum. THANK YOU Guys !!

Best regards, dpast32

A simple call to S&W and a friendly customer service person can tell you who it was shipped to.

Factory customer service may tell you the year it shipped, but usually nothing more specific than that (including its destination).

Many LE and security agencies beyond NYPD and Brinks used the DAO model 64. If it is not stamped NY-1 it likely didn't ship to them (and more than a few stamped as such went to other agencies as production overruns). Even if other Brinks guns are known in the same prefix neighborhood it may not follow yours was one, but it's a good place to start researching it. Hope this is helpful.

I know they usually don't. But as I said friendly and proper lead in and I've gotten as much information as a letter can get you. Your mileage may vary.

To add: During one conversation I had, I was told about a software change(2014 or so)and the new contains little info, but the older software can be accessed and destination and numbers produced are available. That's the one you want to get your information from.

On your box label what is the Product Code (6-digits) and Spec. Ord. number (4-digits)?

Post that, and I can answer your question about what was on a M64-5 4-inch NY-1 label.

KC is the local expert on Product Codes so I will defer to him. The Special Order code at that time usually indicated the day the gun was ready to ship; this would have been the 13th day of the year (edit to add) 1990 or 2000. (If you need a calendar for this I can't help you ). Some guns actually had a significance to the SOC number so if the year estimate is far off this may be the case for your gun.

I'll try to dig up the box, & copy the end label here. I know for sure I purchased in circa 1995, because I initially grabbed it as an 'working sample / type model' to show my Dept. Brass as an ideal example to be our new issue revolver. I had just been chosen as the Dept. armorer, so I'm pretty sure on the date purchased. ( Hopefully, I'm not too far off the mark with the date. If I can find the Sales Rcpt for it, I'll post the confirmed purchase date here. ) At the time, we had an assorted mix of 2" & 4" bbl'd S&W M&P's, Model 10's, 64's, along with a few 2" bbl'd Colt Cobra's. I had been advised that we were going to remain with revolvers for duty use, so naturally when I came across my 64 in an LGS, I snapped it up. However, a few weeks later, it was decided that we would be going with 9mm's for all personnel. Prior to, only select units were issued SIG P226 & P228's. I'm still totally happy I bought it though, even though I never used it for training & such. It's just a darn fine fighting revolver, even though it's 'only' a .38 Spl. THANKS Guys

The ship date, based on the Spec. Ord. number is.....
January 13, 1990.
Which is a typical date for a BET s/n prefix. In fact, I've seen your gun, or it's brother, somewhere along the way in it's box. RB is the feature code for Round Butt. HB is Heavy Barrel. DAO is double action only.

Does the label say "RB **SPECIAL**"?

I don't know who those were made for, could of been Brinks, but the product code 102505 is unique to that specific variation and timeframe. Perhaps specific to that particular buyer/contract. It does not match the p.c. of a 4-inch NY-1 which would be 102508.

The label of a 4-inch M64-5 NY-1 from that era would normaly be marked:
064 .38 4 S SB DAO
BBH5xxx 102508 8297
And is probably going to be in the older style one-piece cardboard box. Known s/n's for the NY-1 Model 64's include:
4-inch (102508)
AWH (-3, 1987)
AWP (-3, 1987)
AZA (-3, 1988)
BBH (-5, 1988)
BBJ (-5, 1988)
BHJ (-5, 1991)

3-inch (102509)
BFV (-5, 1993)
BDV (-5, 1990)

2-inch (102510)
BPD (-5, 1993)
Source of info based on my own independent observations of guns and their box labels, and not the SCoSW.

A truly sincere THANK YOU, to everyone here for their kind replies !! Yet again, my fellow Forum members have answered the call, & challenge. As much as I LOVE the post-war S&W revolvers, I just haven't delved into their history perhaps as much as I should have. I truly lament all the odd & wonderful examples I've had, & unfortunately passed on to focus on other firearms ventures. But, at least I did manage to keep a few of them ! THANKS again Guys.

Best regards, dpast32
