Nothing's more classic than "cokes".
Altamont just introduced these to fit your 686:

Hogue on my 686-6 Pro-Series. Feel good to me. Of course, there are many shapes and sizes of hands out there. Oh, another option, is Herrett round butt targets as on my 66-2. I do not know if you consider these as "Classic Looking" Bob

These are round to square conversion "retro targets" by Ahrends. On an N frame, but he makes plenty for L's. If I were going to put a pair of Ahrends on a 686 I would probably lean toward combats personally, and maybe stay with the round butt too, but that's entirely personal. Anyway, the retro targets have those 'classic' lines I think you're looking for.

I would go on eBay and acquire a set of S&W Target grips unless you have smaller hands.

Ahrends are the best IMHO. Real comfortable, affordable, and great fit. They look pretty good also!

My favorite are the Ahrend's Retro Grips , Target or Combat , in the exotic wood of your choice...real wood not plywood (aka laminate)
Very affordable and they fit the hand.
The model 58 in my avatar has Retro Combats in the now unobtainable cocobolo . I finished them myself with several coats of rubbed in tung oil the wood looks georgeous , dark red with black stripes. Ordered a matching set for a K frame with them and asked Mr. Ahrend to make sure they matched and he did , the woods match perfectly, look like they came from the same block of wood.
Nice people to deal with too .
I like how Altamonts look , but the ones I can afford all seem to be Laminate....and I don't care for the plywood look. I do have a set of real nice walnut grips for a Walther P-38 from Altamont .

Herrett shooting star checkered, if targets feel to big these might be just right. JMHO/YMMV
