Need Help with Model 18-4
I need some advice regarding a model 18-4 I picked up today. Does anyone know if it safe to use high velocity ammo in this revolver? I am fine just using standard velocity, however the vast majority of my 22lr ammo is high velocity. It would be nice if I did not have to buy more ammo. Thanks for the help.

They use that frame and cylinder for .38 and .357. You will be just fine.

Welcome and congratulations on getting one of S&W's finest.
Yep, you can shoot any velocity .22 ammo you want. It won't bother the Model 18 at all.
The Model 18 is my absolute favorite S&W. No telling how many thousands of rounds have been through mine.
It also makes the perfect learning tool to master the trigger on a double action revolver.
You've made an excellent choice. Unfortunately, it'll lead to the S&W addiction. You will want more.

Generally standard velocity is more accurate. Your -4 will tell you which ammo it likes best.

Thanks. My camera is not the best so this is the best I can get. I used Flitz rifle, gun and knife wax to both protect the finish and add a little luster. I am really happy with both the fit and finish. WP_20170617_12_58_30_Pro.jpg

Grayfox, I have not had a revolver in at least a couple years. I was really missing the fun of shooting DA. Luckily I came across this 18 at a garage sale, I knew that the 17 and 18 were highly acclaimed so I did not hesitate to buy it. I'm happy I did, the fit and finish are amazing and it is a really fun gun to shoot. Thanks for the help. I posted some pictures in this thread so let me know what you think.

Neat Model 18,
The lack of barrel pin and left side TM point to early 1980's production,
Seems at the time the majority either had the smooth combat trigger and semi target hammer like yours or wide target hammer / wide target trigger.
(BTW dont ever dry fire a K22 with an empty cylinder)

I have had an 18-4 since the mid 80s and shot all kinds of .22LR thru it. It has the target hammer and trigger. I hated the grooves on the trigger face, and had them polished outback in 1991 when I also had an action job performed. Probably 7 1/2 lbs DA now. The 18 complemented the 19 or 686 I used to carry on duty when ammo was otherwise tight.
