Default 29-8 Mtn gun

Picked this up a little while ago off of GB. These are the sellers photos & I haven't gotten a chance to take my own. I'm happy with it & added some Hogue piranha grips.

Took some of my own. The Hogue grips have some real weight to them, but I really like how they feel.

Great catch Cory. The Hogues are a huge improvement. Your hands will appreciate them too! The blue finish on a Mountain Gun really sets it off. Congrats!!

I had a feeling it hadn't been shot outside the factory, but I fixed that within minutes of picking it up when I put a full cylinder down range

I think the Outfitter was a series of special order Smiths sold by Cabela's. Besides the M629-6, there was also a member that posted a while back with a M57-5 (product code 151001) marked in a similar fashion. That M57 was built on the newer 4-screw N-frame.

OP, what's the product code, s/n, and date code of your M29-8? (All that stuff should be on the box label). Is there any reference to Cabela's in with the paperwork?

I have the box & paperwork at home. I'll post a photo of it after work.

I found several references to a 629 model just like you described on tye net.

I did send off for a letter on it because I couldn't find info on "29" Outfitters

I own a S&W Mountain Gun that's a blued "Outfitter" model like the OP's. It's a cool .44 Mag to shoot and good looking in my opinion. And when I shoot it with my .44 Special handloads it's nothing but fun.

Product Code 150689 is one I've not seen before. It will be interesting to see if the letter explains all the guns in the Outfitter series, how many made of each, and what, if any, is Cabela's connection. We know there is a M629, M29, and a M57. So far all N-frames.

I will update with letter results. Like you mentioned above, all the info I found was primarily for a Cabelas 629 so I'm also curious.

The fact it was very clean, complete with box & papers, seller was from Montana & it was a mountain gun said to buy it. I'm very happy with it.

Had it not been for my 629 Mountain Revolver, that I have come to like so much...this prob wouldn't have happened. Another good note is that it's another 4" 44 Mag N frame, so how can that be bad?

Ha

Letter came today & I will post a photo of it later, but here is the gist. As speculated it was a Cabelas special that shipped with checkered wood target grips.

Great looking Mountain Gun, congratulations.

TALO had a limited edition of 1000 of the Model 29 Mountain Gun made back about 2007. I've had mine since about 2009. I've been very satisfied with it. The factory wood grips were a bit thin for my liking however. I swapped them out for a set of Ahrends and have not looked back. Enjoy, they're great guns.

After handling it again today I have to say I really like the Hogue's. Maybe even more than the rubber X frames I have on my other round butts. I have to shoot them back to back but they really let me get a hold on it.

Would of been nice if Roy had said how many were made for Cabela's. I bet it wasn't very many.

Well, I know where one of them need up...ha ha

I'm can't say I prefer my 629-2 mountain Revolver version over this 29-8 mountain gun or vise versa. Like them both for different reasons.
