686 5 inch barrel
I acquired a 686-6, 5 inch straight round barrel, with partial underlug, 7 rounds. Front sight is serrated black ramp, rear sight is adjustable, grips are black houge mono. No original box or papers. I don't think there were any grip or sight changes made.
Serial number is CHB9xxx.
Revolver is very similar to the Stocking dealer exclusive with wood grips and fiber optic front sight. However I think this gun predates those revolvers by a couple years.
I bought this used, it has little to no wear on the finish. Also do not think the revolver was fired a lot.
Was unable to find any information on the internet. I do not think this gun is a rare find or has any collector interest. I just like the looks of the 5 inch barrel and partial under lug. Bottom line is it is a 686 for just over $600 used.
Just looking for some background information.
Thanks.

Post some pics. I love the 5" barrels, mine is the TALO. Balances really well. $600 range for any 686 is a good deal.

I'm not so sure that this isn't an oddity. A quick perusal of the SCSW (by no means a comprehensive one) doesn't show any 5" barreled, ejector rod shrouded 686's with standard sights - as the OP points out they all had FO front sights.
Is the barrel a one or two-piece barrel? If the latter, maybe a predecessor to the Model 620?
We need the Kernel to weigh-in on this one.
Adios,
Pizza Bob

Good price! I have trade & cash value of $750 in my 686-6. It is a Pro-Series though. This 1 has a 5" barrel. Added Hogue stocks. Bob

I've never seen one just like it. It does look like a M620, but AFAIK those were all 4-inch guns, and introduced a few years later than the s/n on this gun would imply.
It's not a simple barrel swap, cuz where did the barrel come from? I can't think of a donar gun with a 5-inch barrel with that same profile.
I'm leaning towards limited run stocking deal special made in tiny numbers that no one has seen. To bad there is no box. Serial number dates to....
November of 2003.
But with all the mysteries souronding this gun, I wouldn't bet the farm that it also followed a normal dating sequence.

I Recently acquired a no lock, square butt 6 inch 686. I would LOVE to have S&W custom shop convert to a 7 Shot with this 5 inch 1/2 lug barrel.

Pretty sure that's the 5" Hi-Viz model with the fiber optic front sight replaced with a proper blade...as I and many other would likely do.
