Default M-629, No Dash, No Pinned Barrel

Howdy....... a question that is bugging me:

A 629-no dash purchased last weekend at a local gun show was re-visited last night and I realized it is NOT a pinned barrel but has recessed chambers and no dash. I was so excited when I bought the thing that I did not notice a lack of pin. It was in a Presentation Box w/ all tools and at least 98%.

I wonder if it was built during a transition ?? to the Dash-1??

The serial is N8755xx for those that might help out with this question.

Lastly, I paid $1100 which I feel is fair for this piece............what do y'all think?

Thanks to all in advance..................

Take care and Happy Weekend, Bo

My 629-2 has a feature on it that wasn't supposed to be there until later models. Specifically it's drilled and tapped for a scope mount which was not supposed to be the case on my revolver. That's my understanding anyway. I've been wrong before though so you may want to ask someone who really knows.

That model originally had a pinned barrel which was eliminated in 1982 along with the counter-bored cylinder and was stamped 629-1. Your revolver was probably produced right at the time of the changes and was built without a pinned barrel but did get a counter-bored cylinder. This is common with some engineering changes, they may mandate the change but they're not going to throw away any counter-bored cylinders and etc. that they may still have. Your revolver could have been built with a pinned barrel and a cylinder that wasn't counter-bored. As for the price, it sounds like full bore but if you're happy, that's all that matters. Anyway, enjoy that great piece!

Very nice. I believe the no dash 629 was a transition gun, some were pinned, some not. I don't think you overpaid for your gun / accessories. They don't make em any more...

I my mind a 629 no-dash should have a pinned barrel and recessed (or counterbored) cylinder.

In 1982 with the introduction of the 629-1 the pinned barrel and the recessed cylinder were discontinued.

I would say you have a transition gun, i.e. some features of the 629 no-dash (recessed cylinder) and the 629-1 (barrel not pinned).

N800000 1980-1983 so I could imagine N8755xx being produced/shipped 1982 about the time of the transition.

The SCSW gives the following values for the Model 629:
NIB = $1000
Excellent = $750
with a caveat that early no-dash pinned and recessed examples may bring a premium in higher condition grades.

Is a pinned and recessed 629-0 better than a 629-4 that has the performance package and other improvements and is still pre MIM and pre lock?

I think I'd prefer a 629-4 over the 629-0

The dash 4s are most definitely more accurate than a no dash gun. You can throw a cat through the charge holes of a no dash gun. It' a collectors/ nostalgia thing. It won't be long before that dash 4 becomes a collectible piece because of the time frame it was built and its features.

These dates cover the 629 no dash up to Jan 1981.

I have your gun's twin, Model 629 no dash, 8-3/8 inch unpinned barrel, recessed cylinder, S/N N875472.

Shooting buddy has a similar 629 no dash but it has a pinned barrel and non-recessed cylinder.

S&W, just using up perfectly good parts.

I had to go look in my safe at the 4" ND and the 6" -4 to see if I could tell which one is better. Nope, can't tell. Must be a tie.
