Default 586 help please

i just received this pistol as a gift from a friend and its missing the rear sights.
from what i read is that this is a old style rear sight and pretty much good luck.
this is a 586 no dash and nickel plated
does anyone know where i can get one. i dont care if its white, outlines etc etc. i just would like to put something on it so i can shoot it.

thank you very much for your help
btw im a collector of different firearms but this is my first S&W revolver.

I've forgotten the company but there's someone that makes a "Fixed" sight that should go in there, fills in the top strap, looks good. Should be able to find it with a search on line

Post number 2 in this thread should help...

1982 586 rear sight

Most likely the fixed sight that chromedhearts is thinking of is from Cylinder & Slide and is meant for round-tang sighted guns that are drilled & tapped - won't fit yours.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Welcome and nice gun you have. Looks like you'll also need the Elevation Stud and Sight Leaf Screw besides the Rear Sight Assembly. Anyway start with Numrich Gun Parts, E-Bay, Brownells, and GunBroker. com (search parts) to name a few places. Put in Want to Buy ads on forums like this one. Eventually and hopefully you'll have success. Good Luck.

K, L & N frame sights are the same. Blade height is determined by caliber and barrel length. There is a chart that tells you what blade height each gun uses. I think I have it somewhere and if I find it, I'll post it up. Again, not germane to your search - blades can be changed.

The critical thing when buying a sight on the secondary market is hole spacing.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

ADDENDUM: Found the chart, but it's an old one and pre-dates the L frames. Maybe someone has one that is more current.

Both my 586 no dash 6 inch and 686 4 inch have a .146 rear sight blade. Both are black sight assembly's. I would think that the nickel guns came with a black sight assembly, but even if they were nickel, I would replace with a black assembly for a better sight picture.
I believe that most L frames came with this sight height, so you should be able to find one without much trouble. I found a J frame rear sight blade on Ebay that Smith told me they do not make, at least currently.

sorry for the quick and short messages
ive been really busy at work and no play time

I have not even looked down the barrel of the pistol yet

here is what the pistol looks like and what came with it
im guessing the black thing is a Elevation Stud?

I measured from hole to the back and it came out to 1.785
so im guessing this is the measurement I will need for the rear sight
here is the pistol I received
sorry ****** pic I was in a hurry

thanks for all the reply's guys

Uhhhh, no, sorry. I have no idea what that is. Here's an exploded drawing of the rear sight assembly so you can figure out what you need. I would imagine that components for the elevation mechanism would be common to today's sight, so are probably still available from Smith.

Your measurement should be from leading edge of the U-shaped cutout to the leading edge of hole farthest forward on the top strap.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Looks like a rear peep for some kind of rifle. Maybe a piece from one of the vast multitude of AR sight assemblies.

Besides the later production rounded site leafs (3 or 4 variations there ?)
Be advised not all K sites are interchangeable,

IIRC prior to around 1968 (during the dash 2 revision) K frame rear sites front screw is slightly further back,
In an attempt to relocate the rear sites front mounting screw away from the blast above the forcing cone of the Combat Magnum the hole was moved slightly forward with the the K target dash 3 revison (19-3, 14-3, 15-3 etc) .

I just want to say thank you for the help. Ken158 came to the rescue and had a extra that he made up for me.

I installed it and shot around 75 rounds of .38 and .357

fun to shoot .38 a little to much in .357 but still fun to shoot

just a quick thank you for all the help
