640 Pro or 640 Which would you have/buy?
I have a 640-3 and I Love it. Have been thinking about the 640Pro. Is it worth the money or is it just a 640-3 with fluted barrel, adjustable sights and no lock? Is it really better and why?

I have the Pro model. I don't currently use the moon clips, but might at some time in the future. The flutes on the barrel are just for appearance, and I think I prefer the non fluted barrel. The sights are doubly adjustable for windage, but not for elevation. Mine shoot to point of aim with 158 gr ammo, so I use BB's non plus p version of the FBI load. I also like Speers 135 gr plus P GDSB ammo, but the gun shoots them low. And, because of the night sight feature, I can't file the front blade down, as I have on other guns. I probably would have bought the dash three, but I didn't want the lock on my main carry gun. I don't think there is any functional difference between the three and the Pro, which is on a dash one frame. So, I am essentially paying a premium to eliminate a "feature" that I don't want. An interesting marketing ploy! In any event, the M640 is a very nice carry revolver, lock or no.
I carry mine in a High Noon pocket holster, or a Lobo Gun Leather Original Pancake holster, depending on dress.
Best,
Rick

I have a 640 no dash from '93. The trigger is smooth and it shoots great. It's one I shoot often. Mine is 38spl.

640 Pro
I bought a 640 PRO in February. I had a action job done on it. It has a 10 pound trigger pull (with stock springs) and is smooth as glass. It is PERFECT now!!!!!

I like all 640's, and have the 640 Pro. I like everything about it. Sights are great, and I do love the looks of the fluted barrel. Its my EDC.

If I didn't have a 640 and was buying, then I would seriously look at the pro, over the standard 640. If I already had a standard 640 (especially with out the lock) it would have to be a DAMM good deal to switch. There are other guns I would buy first

I had a regular, non-Pro 640-1 I'd bought used. It was a prior shooting range rental gun. It was good, but the cylinder & yoke wasn't quite locking in smoothly enough for me. I had to press it in two places for it to lock up. Perhaps the yoke was tweaked just a bit. I had a friend who wanted it and I sold it. I often used it as a backup gun to my issued Glock.
A few years later, I saw the 640 Pro on S&W's website; ordered & bought one. It's a great gun and I find I'm more accurate having those installed night sights. I now carry it with 130gr Winchester RA38B +P, which is issued to me. 158gr ammo does seem to shoot POA better but the 130gr shoots close enough, perhaps just an inch or two lower at 15 yards.
I notice I can group much better with my 640 Pro vs. my 642-1. I do carry the 640 Pro with the moon clips and find they allow me to more reliably extract the cases when performing a reload.
If my original, used 640-1 wasn't "tweaked", I probably would have been happy with it, not buying & knowing how nice the 640 Pro is. (At least mine is good. There was someone on the internet who had one which wasn't shooting accurately for him due to his being delivered with a misaligned barrel.
I'm no longer carrying it as an on-duty backup gun, but do enjoy shooting and carrying it off-duty.

The 640 is a great gun, but the Pro is exceptional because of the sights. Then again, how often do you use sights on a snubby? If I could only choose one gun to carry all the time it would be my 640 Pro.

I've got the Mdl 640-3, SN CWMXXXX. I added the XS Sights Big Dot (.180 inches) sight ($50) which gives me a very visible front sight to work with -- day or night -- that is perfect for a handgun optimized for use inside 25 feet. See: XS Sight Systems, Inc. - Products - J-Frames Pinned Front Sight
I had TK Custom moon clip it ($150) and have been working with the moon clips -- no doubt the fastest reload you can do with a revolver.
I would take a Mdl 640 Pro in a heartbeat -- but I'm liking my Mdl 640-3 as modified. I think both guns are functionally the same. The Mdl 640-3 trigger has really gotten quite smooth after 500+- rounds.
If the OP is not interested in moon clips, but just wants a better sighting system, the Mdl 640-3 with the XS Big Dot sight would be less expensive than the Pro, which admittedly has nice sights on it!

I like that Big Dot sight.
I prefer having the night sight on the front blade only.
In a night time social encounter, I don't think there would be time to do more than just put the front sight on the bad guy and shoot. Three dots glowing in the dark are a bit confusing.
Best,
Rick

The Pro for the sights alone. The moon clip doesn't work for me. My 640 Pro is my edc.

I was going to by a Pro when I bought my 649. The lock has now been disabled and it's had a trigger job. I put a Hi-Viz front sight on it.
If I had it to do again, I'd do the same exact thing and get the 649.

I have the 640 Pro. I retired my 642 to the safe when I bought it. The sights, and trigger are great. The moon clips are also not for me. When I carry it I use speed strips in my weak side pocket.

I have a 640 no dash as well as a 640 pro. For shooting ease and accuracy I like the Pro with the better sights and slightly longer barrel and J Magnum frame. For carry the 640 no dash on the slightly smaller j frame and unshrouuded and shorter barrel. My perfect carry is my 940-1

I passed on a pre-lock 640 Pro (hardly used, w. box) just 2 days ago because i carry an early 640 Centennial. The seller wants $600, i threw the $550 offer. But he knows that others will gladly pay more, and probably won't call back

I have old SW 640 1/78th BBL but if I had to go with a new one Pro is sweet. You have fluted BBL look great sights no lock. All tuned up from custom shop. Both great guns but if your not happy I think the pro will be a easy sell because it's custom shop gun you can not worry about losing warranty for after market custom work cause it's done already turn key so to speak put and set of custom boot grips man you have even better gun. Just my 2 cents not worth anything good luck to you.

I've had the 640 and now the 640 Pro. I like the night sights and use the moon clips only as my first load for easy removal of all spent rounds. The gun shoots a little low as some have pointed out with some ammo, but I really like the gun and it gets a lot of carry time in a Galco Sto and GO IWB.

I wish Smith and Wesson would get rid of the lock. Imagine how many gun sales they would get if they got rid of the lock on all their new guns.
But one nice thing about moon clips. Is you can keep a couple of moon clips loaded. And you can store your gun unloaded with loaded moon clips nearby. That way it would be easy to load the gun if a situation arose that you needed to load the gun quickly. Just pop the thing in.

Reading the original post and some later comments, I'm unsure if it was made clear regarding info on the 640PRO.
The 640PRO is marked "640-1" and has NO LOCK.
Whether it's "better" or "worth the money" is totally up to a buyer. To me, it (is) was. To summarize a potential buyer's considerations,
-fluted barrel.
-moon clips.
-fixed night sights.
-no lock.
A buyer must decide if any or all of these characteristics are wanted; not wanted; or appreciated.

Poor sights are the number one problem with Centennials. The PRO model solves that.

I like mine a lot and who needs sights at the close range it would be needed to be used?

Don't underestimate the mighty Centennial! With a little bit of effort, you can drop 'em in there at 25 yards no problem. It's just easier on old eyes if the gun has better sights!
