Default 327 PC 2" Coming My Way - Updated

Today I won an auction for a S&W 327 Performance Center 2". I like my new R8 so much that it made sense to me (and my wife in a moment of weakness agreed ) to obtain its little brother. It is used and comes with a set of LG 314 crimson trace grips that I can try with the snub nose or the R8. And, I have a Don Hume JIT slide holster for the R8 will work for new guy. It's like the planets were in alignment or something.

I'm pleased as can be to add this little guy to the fold.

Congratulations on getting the gun you want. Your comment on "getting this little guy" IMO it's a big guy with a short barrel.

Good choice. It isn't that difficult to conceal in a IWB holster.

I was out of town this week so I finally was able to pick up the 327 PC today. It shows some wear but cleaned up nice. The trigger pull was a little heavy for my tastes at about 10.5 DA and 4.5 SA. I put in a 14 lb trigger return spring and cleaned/lubed everything while I was in there. Now, the trigger pull is just over 9 DA and just over 3 SA...perfect! The DA now matches well with my R8, which was what I wanted. I'm not sure I'll keep the CT grips or go with something more compact. Looking forward to the first range outing with this pair.

I put CT grips on my 327PC too. I find they really help tame the sting if shooting full power 357 magnum ammunition. It is a good grip design regardless of the laser. But the laser does seem to fit the mission of the gun (if you can keep the batteries updated which I have trouble doing.)

The CT grips came with the gun in my case. They are comfortable but they sure are big. It's also nice to have the red dot sight as an option.

Yeah I agree they are big, but it's a big N frame. If you want rubber grips that are a little smaller, I have been putting Pachmayr Diamond Pro grips on some of my guns. They are pretty comfortable and fairly inexpensive. You have to get rid of the grip pin which I worry I will lose if I ever want to change back to a different grip. They are also a little difficult to slide off and on which bothers me because I prefer to remove my grips during cleaning. I'm hoping that I will figure out the trick to remove and slide them on as I have them longer.

Here's a picture of the Diamond Pro's on a 44.

Well, I have been able to take the 327 PC out for a couple of range trips now. All shots were taken from 7 yards. I plan to stretch it out a bit next range session.

I'll be honest that I struggled shooting it the first time at the range. I was in the general area but very inconsistent and low. I shot mostly 125 grain 38 special along with some +p's and a half cylinder of 357 125 golden sabers. The trigger felt great but I couldn't get the shots to go where I wanted.

My second range trip was yesterday afternoon. It went much much better. This time I went with 158 grain. I started off with 38 special then mixed in a couple of different 357 rounds. I realized I wasn't using the right sight picture, which was the majority of the reason I was shooting low. I started lining up the top of the orange insert rather than the top of the sight. That worked a whole lot better! The 158 grain rounds may have made a difference too but at 7 rounds I'm not sure that contributed.

This revolver is a nice shooter. I was consistently getting 5-6 rounds in a nice 2-3 inch group with some remaining flyers that opened the 8 round group a bit...but not much. I should have taken a picture but always forget to do that. I was surprised how comfortable it was to shoot 357. I imagine the CT grips were a big factor in felt recoil.

I cannot shoot DA well yet by using a fast trigger pull but I expect I will get there. Right now I need to focus on using a firm grip and pulling the trigger straight back at medium speed. Just need more practice to gain some speed while maintaining accuracy.

All in all I am very impressed with this revolver!

This is a big change from your big 629. Yeah it takes a while to learn to shoot the 327PC but after some practice you will be amazed at how accurate that short barrel can be. Like I said above, I like the feel of the CT grips. I can shoot Golden Sabres in 357 magnum but anything above that mid level round is too punishing for me in that light gun. I mostly load 38 and 38+P level rounds in 357 cases for practice. I like to shoot heavier bullets too. One thing I really noticed was how smooth and easy DA is in this gun due to the low mass of the Ti cylinder. Mine has one of the best actions of all my revolvers. Remember to use non ammoniated cleaners and nylon brushes so you don't damage the coating on the Ti cylinder.

2nd on the non ammoniated cleaners and nylon brushes, My 327PC has over 600 rounds , very few 357 mag my 75 year old hands can't take it,when I first got it it shot low and to the left, went to 158 grain ammo and learned to use the sights ,NOW it will bust the target in the big red bull. LOL,Did I say I love this gun .

I use Ballistol as my gun cleaner. No ammonia in it to my knowledge.

As a used revolver it does have some wear. There may be the beginnings of some cylinder erosion on two chambers so I'll keep my eye on it. It certainly does not affect function.

Congrats. I am one jealous sucker. I have the big one too and having both has always been a "dream". When I window shop the 327 PC the 627 snubby always shouts, "me me me!"

How much more does the recoil bite on the 2" barrel?

Yes, I call refer to them as the big one and little one too. Lol.

Dryfire, dryfire, dryfire.

I started out a couple of years ago on the path to get good with a double action revolver trigger. I did all of the recommended drills such as putting a coin on the barrel and a laser in the chamber so I could see when I was moving the gun too much. They all work.

Gotta go now - need to dryfire a little bit.

I didn't think the recoil was bad and I'm no fan of recoil. I knew I was shooting 357 magnum but it didn't hurt at all. The rubber CT grips probably made a difference. I haven't shot it with the wooden grips that came with the gun. I imagine those might sting.

I shot pretty tame 357s that we're in the 1150 to 1250 fps range. I could have shot as many as my heart desired.

I have been dry firing with snap caps and it does help quite a bit, especially with the red dot showing me any undesired movement during trigger pull. The one thing dry firing doesn't help is dealing with muzzle flip and getting the pistol back on target for the next shot as quickly as possible. But with time and practice I am determined to improve.

Unfortunately I have to send the 327 back to S&W for repairs. When cleaning it today I noticed the barrel was loose. It appears that the barrel shroud/sleeve worked its way loose. I could have unscrewed the barrel by hand with very little effort.

Smith was very easy to deal with and I had my shipping label before I got off the phone. It's great that they stand by the product even if you're not the original buyer.

While they have it I'm also going to have them look at the cylinder and what appears to me to be the signs of erosion.

It is disappointing because I was just about to put it into the carry rotation. It is such a nice shooter. But, I am confident Smith will take care of me.

Quick update...

The 327 arrived today. Smith and Wesson replaced the barrel and cylinder. Gotta give their customer service an A+ on this one. Quick turnaround and great service on a used firearm. I expected the barrel to be replaced but wasn't sure on the cylinder.

Can't wait to shoot it again!

9/18/17 Update: I was able to put 50 rounds down range yesterday. All is well again.
