Default A July 4th Tradition: Soaking the 940

But unlike previous years I didn't do it fishing. Instead, we kayaked up the creek, further than the previous best wading trek 40 years ago, but still short of the goal of getting to a known tributary.

Lets see if the Imgur hosting site will share photos easily here:

ETA: well, that didn't work. See below:

Link with captions:

940 Soaking: a July 4th tradition - Album on Imgur

940 Soaking: a July 4th tradition - Album on Imgur

EDIT2
test:

Three hours upstream, 45 minutes back.

EDIT 3:
That seemed to work, and since only about 15 people followed the link, here's
the photos in the album. Note that the 940 got dunked only because it got taken out of it's pocket for the photos! Was secure all the rest of the day....

Dry box most useful to keep camera and phone alive. Machete came in handy, too.

Such as here, where a fallen tree had blocked most of the creek. This side channel was created when the tree on the right bank (going upstream) uprooted. The main channel was also blocked in the same place by a downed tree from the opposite side! Quite the mess.

940 snake medicine. Stopped at this rock for a break and photos.

Figured the velcro'ed pocket flap would suffice to secure the 940, but I must not have closed it well after taking pictures.....

Fell in whilst retrieving machete left accidentally at photo site. It was damp already, but...
Not intentional!

It has been pulled apart and dried. Even after sitting overnight, no rust on the casehardened non-stainless trigger and hammer!

Finally got some interior photos loaded. All these years and immersions, yet the innards look WAY better than the outside, even the non stainless parts!

J, Good to see that you got away from the rat race for a minute. You should get a life jacket for the 940, it obviously hasn't learned to swim after all these years.

Usually we end up swimming together, not generally on purpose! This is the first time it went under without me.
It IS about out of it's teens. Should be roughly 20 years old this year.

Getting independent?

Dont care how old it is, until it learns to swim it still needs to have some Water Wings on anytime it's around water.

0bviously, a little swim wont hurt a Smith.. l bet it'll shoot submerged too.

What really amazed me were the deck guns of submarines during WWll.

Cruising around the world bathed in salt water and all the other trash.

Then surfacing and ready for ACTION at a moments' notice. Talk about

a cleaning chore after a few rounds thru a salt water soaked deck gun..

Most likely a pretty challenging chore, even for our j.moose...:-)

Thought I'd done a link of the rest of the creek photos. But apparently not. Way too many to do here, so if you like to be bored by other folks' non-firearms woods activities here it is:

Up Shoal Creek with a Paddle (and camera) - Album on Imgur

Would also link to an older S&W thread that USED to show why aluminum J frame revolvers aren't so good for this sort of thing, but the photos are gone thanks to P'bucket. At any rate, the galvanic potential for corrosion is rather greater due to the dissimilar metals. The aluminum alloy tends to "fizz"!

I looked at your pics and made me not want to go to work! I bet that was one relaxing day. I hope you didn't have to use those snake shot rounds!!

As a fly fisherman/member of the armed swimmers society , it's another reason to learn , clean , and lube the internals of your favorite swimming pardner , which you seem to have mastered well . Suggestion: lanyard ring !

my older 60 has been dunked a time or two also... think its always faired better than me after falling overboard. last time i went in, tore my left thumb up, 60 left a mark on my chest from slamming a gunnel into the shoulder rig. it shot just fine a month later, and was no worse for wear, unlike its owner! love to see i'm not the only "dunker" on the forum...

Same region, but not those states. Granted, "Shoal Creek" isn't a particularly original name, but I reckon that's what it's been called since the early-ish 1800's.

Have thought about adding said, it's one reason I tried the M&P 340. However, the 340 doesn't fare nearly as well, corrosion-wise, especially on over-night soggy trips in the boonies.

Oddly, this creek seems relatively free of snakes for over 40 years in my experience. Unlike some of my water trips in TN, where there seem to be more snakes than fish!
