What the heck happened to all the 547s 9mm for sale? I know they are a bit unusual, but. Anybody seen any?

Their in that strange class not rare, but also not common.
I only saw 2 for sale in the last ten years in my area. That includes LGS, gun shows and our "want add digest" I am retired and hardly ever drive by a LGS without stopping in to look around.
A couple of years ago I got lucky and found a very nice 3''. Price was reasonable, (for that gun) I did not try to dicker just pulled my credit card out of my wallet at warp speed, after giving it a good check over. Got the gun for less than $900 and that includes 7% sales tax.

They're not rare (over 10k made), but owners tend to hold on to them. Interestingly, there were more 3" models made than 4", but the shorter barrel commands higher prices. They're interesting guns, but the unique extractor is supposed to be somewhat delicate. If it breaks you have a nice paperweight.

I've never heard of them breaking, but I haven't heard of everything. The extractors were made of beryllium copper, very tough stuff.

My son a machinist foreman & CNC programmer and shooter looked at and shot the gun.
His comment about the extractor was it was very well built and best bet it took a bit of time and good equipment to make that part. I suppose if mine ever breaks a little bit of arm twisting and some patience on my part and it will be fixed!

Have to agree with all posts. 10270 total made. 6486 in 3" and 3784
in 4". Have both. Such a neat gun to shoot. Eats anything. Just wish
they had put adj. sights on it. Neither gun has matching grips. Thanks

I had a 4" one years ago, it was stolen with several other handguns (serial # ABL 5311). For whatever reason, I could shoot it double action better than any revolver I've owned before or since.
I bought a 3" one to replace it, but it just wasn't the same; so it's gone on down the road.

I just bought another 3" 547 around the 1st of the year.
It had been ceracoated in desert tan, was disassembled and had a cracked forcing cone.
Even with the cost of the replacement barrel, I only have $300 into it so far. The next expense will be to refinish it.
I may just ceracoat it again.

While I have heard that same Internet rumor about the extractor, I have never heard of one breaking.
The extractor is complex to assemble and disassemble, I would not call it delicate.
There is an individual beryllium copper extractor for each chamber.
Even if one broke, you would not have a paper weight, you would have a 5 shooter. I am certain that a true revolversmith could easily fashion a replacement from spring steel, just not sure how long it would last.

I see about the same number of 547s for sale online as in previous years, perhaps 1-2 every month or so. Selling prices seem to have stabilized but in a fairly high range ($1100-1300). Member 5Wire (Bob) probably tracks these and can show you an impresive Excel spreadsheet with historical values.

If you found a 9mm barrel, and you are still in for $300, good deal. Congrats.

The only reason I can think of for choosing beryllium copper instead of steel is that it is softer and easier to machine. The choice might have lessened the "bit of time and good equipment" required enough to make the assembly affordable.
Beryllium copper is most famously used to make non-sparking tools for use on oil rigs and other sites that have extreme fire hazard. Beryllium copper conducts electricity much better than steel making it less likely to spark. The two draw backs are beryllium copper wrenches are very expensive and weaker than ordinary wrenches.
Anyone know for sure why S&W chose beryllium copper?

Every time I get interested in a new (old) gun I find out it was made of unobtainium.

I'm no expert in these, murphydog, but because a friend bought one recently online, I've kinda been watching a bit lately. One 3" sold with all the bells and whistles close to $1,600, I believe, and the other 3" was just the gun and it still brought almost $1,500. Needless to say, but I'll say it anyway: I think the word is out.

I have seen S&W 9mm revolvers for sale, but they all cost over $1,000. I have some good S&W Semi autos that are up to the task of putting a 9mm round down range on target.

There were two at last weekend's Riverton, Wyo., show. My 3" was tagged at $1,200 and another guy had a pinned-barrel 4", which he offered for $950. Mine was in a wee bit better condition, but the other guy's had the correct stocks.

last 547 I saw was 20 to 25 years ago. I wanted it and had a feeling it would someday be a collectible but could not afford the $175.00 asking price

The 547 was S&W's first Center fire revolver to have an internal firing pin,
The unique features on the 547 are its cylinder/extractor system and the cartridge holding pin (located just above the firing pin) that applies pressure to the 9mm case head keeping it seated in the cylinder when fired.
The barrel is roll stamped slightly different with a patent number IIRC but is otherwise a Model 13 barrel, If S&W could bring back one classic revolver my vote would be a 4" SS 647 with target sites.
Had an idea for a dream build a while back thinking that a Model 53 frame with a mated to a Model 19 barrel in hard chrome might just accomplish this, Perhaps the hardest part would be retro fitting the upper rimfire firing pin hole with a K22 internal firing pin filed down slightly to act as a holding pin.
On a side note when S&w was clearing out unsold 547 stock they offered a version with a 9mm cylinder and a spare 357 Magnum cylinder as the Model 547 M

5Wire-
Is this national average? Here in Cali, I found 3. $2k. $1,950, $2,200!
Two are 3"ers. One is pinned.

NICE!
I'm haphazard about data collection. I do it when I feel like it. Auction sites like GunsAmerica, Gunbroker for completed auctions, google searches, forum classifieds. I'm looking for trends over time, not precise averages. Also, 95% or better. That lets out some perfectly good 'shooter' guns, wonderful refinishes, etc.

I just sold a NIB one for $1600 it was a 4 inch model with the pin barrel brand-new in the box with the tools paperwork and a HKS speed loader. I hate to sell it but needed the funds for another project. It was just sitting in my safe and I figure I will let someone else enjoy it.

I had one of each. Very nice revolvers, sold 'em because I was looking to acquire the odd HK P7 or two
Hogues on the 3-inch to save my knuckles. Regular stocks went with the revolver when I sold it.

Appreciate all the posts. From the looks of things, prices are headed up.
It is such a darn neat gun to shoot. Eats anything.

gmborkovic, I've owned two, and agree they are darn neat to shoot. That extraction system worked perfectly in the two I owned, even with +P and +P+ ammo. I have never seen one in a shop, and only once at a big gunshow, years ago. I bought that one. Paid $325.00 for it, ANIB 3". I bought the prior one, also a 3", back when they were in production and probably paid around whatever MSRP was at the time. Never dreamed they'd become collectable and sell at today's prices. The only concern that I had with mine was the beryllium copper extractor. They extract just fine, but I noticed after very moderate use, carry up/timing started to get a bit lazy. I guess that is inevitable with a steel hand working against a copper extractor, even a relatively hard copper extractor. If S&W would bring back a similar 9MM revolver with adjustable sights, I'd buy one in each and every barrel length that might be offered........

Posted many times already but here is my EDC 547 :
High prices are bringing them out of safes and onto popular auction sites. If you really want one, as I did, you will most likely have to pony up, but if you do the ride is worth it.

Grips on the 547
I know that the 547 round butt guns were supposed to ship with the round butt target grips (banana grips), but this one has magna grips. My gun also had magna grips when I bought it. Mine was immaculate and in the box. The magna grips fit perfectly.
My question is: did all the round butt 547's ship with target grips or did those at the end of production (which my serial number would suggest) have magna grips installed?
Thanks,
Bill

I see one every time I open my safe. It is a 4 inch square butt model so there is less than 5000 made. According to what I have read there were only 10000 made and roughly 5400 - 5600 were 3 inch models and the rest were 4 inch models. Maybe not exactly rare but they are scarce.
