I am currently pursuing a model 25-2 for sale.
I am trying to confirm that it is 45 acp. The seller is less than sure.
The serial# is, N640xxx. The number is on the base
Of the grips.
Any info on this firearm would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. Your ser. # shows to be around 1979-80 time frame. If it's marked 25-2 and hasn't been altered, then it should be .45ACP.
Without checking further or taking to someone that would know, if barrel is marked Model 1955 and cylinder is cut for moon clips, I'd say it's .45ACP.

With no box, etc. that's probably still a decent price. Gun looks good in the pics. As noted, it's a .45 ACP. How come the seller doesn't know what caliber his gun is? Just wondering out loud.

Welcome to the FORUM! Sometimes sellers are not too educated as to what they have. May have picked it up in a trade hoping to turn a profit on it. Seller is a vendor/ dealer. All Armslist transactions I have done have been FTF. Let us know how you make out. I would like to own 1 like it! Bob

Permits came in, and picked it up for $650.00
My township saved me $50 in the time it took for the permits , the seller dropped it $50.

Your going to love that handgun, great price by the way. Look at Midway or Brownells for clips or your local gun shop. I run full clips in mine using a BMT loader. You can get half clips, 2 round clips, there are many options. Enjoy

Why pay the large mark-up of the retailers and end up with Ranch Products clips anyway? Buy direct from Ranch. I bought a hundred .45 ACP moon clips for $35 - that's practically a lifetime supply. For $.35 each you don't cry when the SO behind you steps on one - not like the $7 each clips for 9 mm or .38 Super.

Get a BMT moon clip tool for loading and unloading the clips. More expensive than than others, but after you use it, you'll forget what you spent. Fast, and easy on the fingers, and clips will last a long time. I use clips from Revolver Supply. The work with all five of my 45acp guns and all of the various brands of ammo I use. Remember, you can use the ammo without the clips. You just have to poke out the empties with a pencil. Once you use a revolver that uses moon clips, you'll wonder why they aren't used with all revolvers. Enjoy that 25.

For range use, you can't beat RIMZ POLY MOON CLIPS! NO tools necessary. I use them in my 625 JM. Bob

Yeah, my "TK Customs" moon clips look to be rebranded Ranch Products full moons. I may be wrong. But I know both run well in my 625-8...

Another vote for the Rimz. Loaded rounds snap right in and empties pop right out, all without tools.

I love my 25-2. Obviously since you have posted a range pic, you have loaded the 45 ACP and found it shoots like a dream.

I found some wide variance in the thickness of metal full moon clips as wells as quality control issues with extremely sharp edges from the stamping operation of some of the "cheapies". Since I had some original S & W factory half-moon clips that came with the gun, I asked at my LGS about S&W factory full moon clips and was shown small plastic boxes of S & W factory sealed with part number 191420000 on the end and I bought two boxes for trial. These measured 0.041" thick (exactly the same as the original half moons and most of my supply of cheapies were measuring around 0.038" to 0.039" which were resulting in a light strike, hence FTF about once per clip. I do use a BMT Equip Model N45-6 loader/de-loader and would now not use anything else. Google the BMT and watch the video.

The single cartridge with no moon is also a suggestion by many but again....for me....it also sometimes resulted in FTF with light strike so maybe my gun has longer throats/charging chambers but since going with the S & W factory moons and pretty much 230 grain FMJ factory brass....no issues and that gun of mine shoots better than me.

Another push for the BMT is if your indoor range charges for lane time, don't show up with less than at least a dozen or so moon clips fully loaded. Even with a BMT tool you want to spend your time shooting, not mooning or de-mooning.

Check the pics if you havern't already done so on your new acquisition. The model number should be clearly right under the serial number with cylinder swung out, and notice the gap distance between rear of cylinder and recoil shields. Als like said above, the barrel should be marked as shown below.

Good luck, and I think you did very good on price considering the New Jersey hassles (coming from my long time in Mt. Laurel Township)

I picked up a 25-2 with a shortened 4" barrel and 85% blueing this year and love the gun! Full moon clips are the way to go. The barrel cut off was very well done and hard to tell its not stock. Best part is after selling off the Spegel grips that were on it and buying some usa made clones I'm only into it $450 ! Its the cheapest Smith that I own and possibly my favorite shooter.
