Default PC 629-6

Picked this up today. Have to say thank you to 75Vette for the heads up on it. I really really really like it. Everything I hoped a Performance Center 44 would be. Lockup is very tight, action is very smooth. Plus it has the hard case, wood stocks & paperwork also. Test case was 2006. A few of the photos are from the GB listing.

I've seen this called "light hunter", "compensated hunter" or just a performance center revolver. I'm curious what the actual name is.

I think the official name is "The Compensated Hunter". At least that's what's on my box end label. The S&W website doesn't say.

Hey 75Vette & sw282,

I looked at this tonight as a possibility if I decide to go with an optic. Leupold Optics VX-3 Handgun 2.5-8x32mm - | Leupold Optics What did you guys decide to use?

I wonder if the product code is 170181. The SCSW pg 311 lists that one as a Talo version, 2006. The fired case is 2006.

That product code might seem obivious, but with the way they change with even the smallest updates, this one has seemingly stayed the same

Hi Cory. I have a 2x Leupold on mine. A 4x Leupold on my 460PC.. Above

4x for me the eye relief tends to greatly increase.. My advice ls to compare

all 3 side-by-side.. Only way you can decide conclusively..

With reference to the "dash" models in 629 S&W it's a bit confusing. There

are Real differences.. Dash 4 was last hammer mounted firing pins.

Dash 5 moved the firing pins internally to the frame.. Not exactly a new

feature on a Smith & Wesson revolver. My 1947 K 22 has a frame mounted pin.

Dash Six saw the introduction of the internal lock on 629s. Now things can

get a bit confusing.. Dash Seven on a 629 means this model has a two or

Three piece barrel... Like the 629 Magnum Hunter for example.. Last but

certainly not least is Mister Eight Ball.. The Dash Eight. He's the one with

the extra screw in the side plate.. Again NOT a new feature on Smith revolvers.

First four screw side plates appear on the original hand ejectors. M&P

was introduced in 1899..

Just a bit before my time.. I believe right now Cory Smith&Wesson makes

three different versions of the 629. Simultaneously!!! MIM parts don't seem

to have any input or effect on Dash numbers.. Your Light Hunter has a

Forged hammer/trigger. Mine too. I think 75s' has MIM ones.. Bottom line

Is.. How it shoots is what counts. Accuracy/handling are KING.. If the gun

can't put the bullet on target when and where you need it, all that other stuff

means NOTHING..

Cory. My Comp Hunter is a dash 6 with the mim parts like sw282 described. For optics I went with a Leupold M8 EER that I got off ebay for about 120 bucks. It has a no questions asked lifetime warranty.
That was a VERY nice scope that you showed in the link but I think overkill. You can spend the extra $600 on boolits!

That's my -8 on top and -6 on the bottom. Both have forged hammers and triggers. See the extra screw below the rear sight on the -8 in the right side pic.

I'd rather have a picatinny rail on the dash 6. I wonder if the dash 8 rail will fit on the dash 6. Any thoughts on other sources of picatinny rail that will fit the dash 6?

RW...Easy enough to find out if the -8 will fit -6... Simply take

both off. Try swapping them.. l do know the -8 mount will reverse..

Saw where one had been turned around... Allowing optic to be

placed further FORWARD.. Don't know l would try that tho...

''G'' forces would be tremendous on those forward screws...

btw... Loctite AIN'T needed. Just tighten in sequence. And repeat

like you would on lug nuts

Unforgivably no. He schedule hasn't allowed time for it. Doesn't look to good for Saturday either. Might leave going prior to work until next weekend. The lockup on it is impressively tight.

The rail has shipped from Brownells. I'm still torn on if I want to put an optic or not.
