The sought after S&W 3" 629-1
Wednesday night, I'm researching 629's here on the board. When I bought mine she was dressed in a nice set of Pachmayrs, however, I recently got around to thinking about how much nicer she might look if I had the proper smooth combat grips. Threads with great photos members have posted over the years are tempting me.
Wow, how pretty she'll look all dressed up in those Goncalo Alves round butt smooth combat grips. Wonder if I know anyone who's got a pair or three tucked away somewhere?
As I'm looking on thread after thread, I see a comment by a forum member:
A guy walks into a gun store ..

The Serial Prefix Is My InItIaLs !!
Holy cats. AVP serial prefix. I have been looking for one for years.
He doesn't want to sell it , BUT may trade for either my 624 3 inch,
OR my 696 no dash.
I would trade either gladly as much as I like them both.
I'm going to throw in 300 rounds of 44 special to tempt him.
I may have pictures soon. Wish Me Luck.!.
May all your Smith dreams come true.

And then another, same guy, saying the same thing:
All SOLD

The sought after S&W 3" 629-1
I click on Allen's profile. He lives in South Florida. Hey, me too. I look at Allen's friends, first one that pops into view...model3sw, interesting, that's my Dad. They probably know each other.
It's late, I'll look into it more tomorrow.
Thursday afternoon, call my Dad, I go over to his house and ask him about Allen, show him the threads I had read. I go out back. Five minutes later, Dad comes out handing me the phone with Allen on the line.
Three hours later, I'm on my way to Allen's house to sell my 629-1. When I arrive, there's a beautiful set of smooth combat grips sitting on the table. I'm smiling inside, this is definitely how this had to happen. A few minutes later the smooth combat grips are on and she looks great.
I was fortunate to sit with a fellow aficionado and see some cool stuff. I'm glad my 629 went to the right guy.

That's my boy, "Rangeline9" and a fellow member and friend "Allen-Frame"
and further this specific .44 Magnum with the AVP serial number came from another fellow member and friend, coltSAA (buddy Mark) to me a few years ago. then to my son (from me), and then to Allen-Frame.
Exemplary topic here is how tight knit the members of this forum are and just thrilled my son decided to join the S&WCA.

That's too funny. It definitely is a small world. I have run into two members of the forum in a LGS. One of them said they knew me on the forum.

Love my LH 629-1 with combats - I wished LH would have also spec'd the tapered 624 barrel for the 629.

I've got a 629-6 Mountain Gun with a 4 Inch tapered barrel. Serial Number CFK39xx if you iike. if so email me. It's just about ANIB. I fired it twice since new and back in the safe.
If I remember correctly this one was made only for 1 year then discontinued. While not a PC the trigger is buttery sweet. Sal

Thanks for the kind offer, but I already had one. I'd like a 3" tapered bbl on the 629. I apologize for any confusion. :-)

I also was feinding for a 3" tapered bbl .44 Magun. Took me almost three years to fin this one. Then I had to out some culina targets on it to handle the recoil. It came with extra skinny magnas....
These were a limited run from Lew Horton in 2008 I think. They did 250 in blue and 250 in nickle.

I prefer the 624 (.44 Special) Lew Horton (no dash), 3" tapered barrel. I've had one since new in the ALU0xxx serial number range with factory combat grips. The .44 Mag and .41 mag are heavy barrels. Then there an early PC 629, too.
