My first Holey S&W inbound, a 617-6
I came real close to snagging a 17 a week or two ago, but was too slow, and I missed it. Wanting a S&W 22 revolver was just stuck in my head, and I couldn't shake it.
I finally read enough here on the forum, looked at enough pictures and handled them in my LGS enough that I am over it, the lock I mean, I think. I won't get over wanting a 22 Smith until I get one.
A pal of mine was selling his LNIB 4" 617-6, and offered it to me for $500. I broke down, and committed to buying it. He's shipping it to my FFL guy, so I won't see it until Monday most likely. But I'm actually excited and anxious to get my hands on it. Hole and all.
Two questions for you guys; Are the plugs still available and do they require disabling the internal trigger lock? (sorry, actually 3 questions) And can anyone tell me what year this was made by the box label?
I've had many 22 handguns over the years, but never a S&W revolver. H&R and various Rugers mostly, including single actions. But as of now I only have my Dad's old H&R, a Ruger MKII stainless bull barrel and an SR22. With the MKII being the most accurate one I've ever owned.
Here's to hoping this 617 shoots even better! (being that I'm having to put up with the stupid hole and everything)

Great price for a 4" 617-6. Just a suggestion -- ignore the lock for a couple months and then see if it still bothers you. I have plenty both with and without the lock and it has never been an issue nor an eye-sore (just make sure the lock is fully disengaged before shooting and that's the last you'll ever have to deal with it).

I have a 617-6 in 6", and I no longer even notice the lock. I'm more concerned with looking at those nice tight groups on my target.

In the week I spent looking at trying to decide, I started getting over it, a little. I've heard they are great shooters and the IL won't matter after a while. Maybe it's just in my head, but it still irks me that Smith went that route, even after all these years.
Well, I'll have one soon enough, so I will get over it. Anyone know what year it is?

I share your pain. You are lucky. You are obviously more adaptable than moi. Despite me trying very, very hard to convince myself that I could do it, in the end I couldn't. I ended up going with a couple Rugers instead.

Look at it this way, if it had always had the hole most people just would not care. The hammer pin was visible on early smiths, and it never stopped anyone that I know of from buying one. On the Ruger DA revolvers the hammer pin is visible, and I don't think I have ever heard of anyone complain. As far as looks, I don't think it does not bother me in the least. The annoying part is that smith caved to gun haters.

I'll be honest, the price is what tipped the scales. That, and seeing some with those stainless plugs. Are those still available? I'm going to wait a month or two as suggested before doing anything but shooting and cleaning it though.

The "Plug" does nothing for me personally. If I ever manage to swallow hard enough and take the plunge into a brand new 17 or 617, I'll be leaving the gun "as-purchased"... and I'd suggest you consider doing the same. The way my old brain works, fighting the problem would be even more problematic than just giving up and accepting it.

It shipped February 26, 2016, per the label.

Thank you Mr. Brown! He told me it was almost "new".
Photos when I get it, but everyone knows what it looks like already. Although I should have some target grips here somewhere.............

I have about 10 S&W revolvers. Some have the lock, some don't.
My preference is no lock, but its not that big of an issue for me.

kray, I guess one might now say that, like a lucky golfer, you can now claim "a hole in one."
Hope it'll be an "ace" for you.

A smith & Wesson .22 revolver is a sweet item for sure. I predict after shooting it you will soon forget about the lock. I wouldn't even bother to plug it. I mean, why bother? So you can pretend it was never there?

That is the way I look at it. The problems with the IL, it was never needed, and probably not used, and the internet.
It is like a beauty mark on a woman, some people actually find them a turn on. Others obsess over them.

I have a 642 with the lock. Haven't thought about it once since the day I bought it.

4" 617-6 OWNER AS WELL
Glad I don't have the silly key. shoots great, 1 issue I have with mine is that after 150-200 rounds, depending on the ammo brand & how dirty they are is that carbon/crud will build up around the top strap & forcing cone & give me some drag & eventually bind things up. Some people get difficulty with this in the chambers. Always have a brass brush along. I bought mine primarily as a training aid for my 681 as they are about as identical as you will find. (works for a 686 even better as both have adjustable sights) The Ruger MKll target is gathering dust.

I have a couple with the IL and found I can ignore it. As mentioned above, just leave it for a while and see if you change your mind - I bet you will.

I am starting to ignore it already! Never believed it I could though. The gun is really sweet, albeit heavy. Yesterday afternoon I got my first chance at shooting it. I brought up a box of 50 rounds thinking I would fire a cylinder or two off the back deck.
Before I knew it the wife wanted to shoot it, and we wiped out the first 50 rounds in no time. I went back down for more and we shot until it was too dark to see the targets.
What a blast! And accurate too! Wifey-poo claimed my Ruger MKII (stainless bull barrel) as hers probably 15 years ago. I'm thinking I'm going to have to pretend to trade this one off in order to keep it!
Now I'm thinking I'll save the cost of the plug and use that money on a speedloader. I'll snap a couple of photos after I wipe it back down this evening and show it off with it's new Hogues.
