Default Need advice on what to do with this 627-PC

So...I wanted a Bloodwork UDR 627 so bad that I checked everywhere everyday for about a year and realized I wasn't going to get one with my budget...but I did manage to pick up this no lock 627-pc with a 5" barrel. Best trigger I have ever felt in a revolver... dead sexy... I shoot it as good as, if not better than my CGW tuned sp-01. I love everything about this big iron...

Except that I can't carry it... and it drives me nuts. I have gone back and forth between accepting this and trying to magically hide a 5" n frame. But I really really want a .357 I can carry and shoot/train with.

So that leaves me with these options:

1. Buy a IL'd 627 with 2 5/8in barrel and swap both the barrels (unless I can find just a 627 2 5/8in barrel, but I don't see that happening) then have to sell or trade the now IL'd 5incher...

2. Get the stock barrel cut down to around that desired length or 2 5/8 - 3 inches

3. Sell/trade it to someone who will appreciate it as it is and get myself the other 357 off my want list... a 3in model 66 (maybe a 4 incher...)

What do you guys think? I appreciate any and all opinions and/or angles of logic

It sounds like you want a no lock for carry? The cut down/ swap barrel thing would be out for me. The real UDR no lock snub can cost $3000 which would also be out for me I don't know about you. A nice 3" 66 dash 2-4 can be $1000 -1500 & it's not recommended to shoot hot 125 gr very much due to possible forcing cone damage. If you could find a no lock 686 snub that could possibly fill your needs. The 3" ones like a CS-1 us customs gun can go high also. What you decide on is out there if you look hard enough & are willing to pay.

What about a 3" model 13 or model 65?

They are still somewhat affordable, and being K Frames will be a lot easier to carry than an N Frame.

A 3" 686 or a 3" LComp 586 could be good options as well.

I'm starting to think maybe I should just be looking for a3" k frame... I would hate to butcher this thing and risk not being happy with the outcome... surely some ICORE shooter or a 8 rounder fan would snatch it up right?

But I would be curious to see if anyone things that giving it a chop or buying another gun to swap barrels would be the way they would go...

If you must have a short bbl check with the factory. They may have some available. The 5 inch 627 pc are pretty valuable in their own right. I would keep it as is and buy a short bbl carry gun!

Or you can just live with the lock. I have a 627PC with the 2 5/8" barrel and it works great and the lock has give no problems at all.

^^^^what he said. With all the stories about poor QC, A 627PC is great condition is worth keeping and not messing with. FWIW, I have bought revolvers that I did not really want or need simply to prevent others from getting them. I consider it my civic duty.

My beater pocket magnum is a Ruger LCR.
Love my 627 but it's bigger no matter how short the barrel is.

Yeah that was what I was hoping (forgot to mention in the first post) I spoke with someone at the performance center and they said they wouldn't do a barrel swap

I agree. A 2.5" or 3" 686+ for carry and the current 627PC for enjoyment.

Consider a model 66 with a 3" barrel. Galco has a nice high rise holster that tucks the gun high on your belt so that it fits nicely under a sweatshirt or baggy shirt. It eats 38+P like candy, and is manageable with full bore .357.

The 586 3" L comp is an awesome gun, but about 40 ounces. I picked one up a few months ago and love it but think the weight puts it out of concealed carry, at least to my taste.

In my opinion, the LCR 357 is the best CCW gun if you really want to carry a 357 Magnum.

Less recoil than the Scandium guns like the 340s or 360s.

A little heavier, but not bad at 17 oz.

Lighter than a Model 60, or 640.

I find mine quite shoot able with low to mid range 357 Magnum rounds like the Speer 135 gr 357 Gold Dot. Even the full power rounds aren't that bad.

I have one of these, about 2 k rounds through it with no issues at all. I replaced the stock grips with some VZs. One of my favorite carry guns. Very controllable with the n frame weight with full house loads. Sturdy big foot belt and modified pancake holster, perfect

Just getting a 627 snub and removing the lock is out of the question?

I had one, and it had issues (still have a bad taste in my mouth from that)...

I guess I'm just one of those people who can't stand what it stands for much less what it does appearance wise to the gun... I don't judge or scoff at anyone who does buy/own them, it's just not something I'll do...

Other than the aforementioned principle I can't come to terms with, I don't think the build quality is in the same league either... not trying to open a can of works with that statement it's just my honest opinion

I love my S&W wheel guns and carried a 36 , 60 & 19 with short barrels and all are excellent but the LCR was designed from a blank sheet of paper for carry and a no snag package with a damn nice trigger.

Its really hard to beat for a quality pocket mag revolver that you can holster or drop in a pocket.

I'm considering doing the same UDR barrel swap for this early 627pc. The "LHV" prefix says that it should have a 6" weighted "Hunter" barrel, but a previous owner has swapped it out for a later 5" barrel. That makes it the perfect candidate for the UDR conversion. BUT i have found out through PMs with 44Powers that Performance Center will not do the barrel swap, which is a total surprise (maybe they prefer that people buy a new snub??)

I am also not a fan of the lock, but carry my 627 PC without concern. It's a wonderful CCW revolver. To personalize mine, I had the cylinder, ejector rod and cylinder release black nitrided.

The 3" M13 or 65 is the way to go.

Have read here within past few years of people having barrels swapped by S&W factory on the 627 and other models.
Unless they changed policy recently in doing so.
Maybe try calling again and speaking with another representative.

An N Frame is a tough gun to carry all day regardless of barrel length. A model 60 with a bobbed hammer is a great carry gun. A 66 with the short barrel is another good one, but the larger cylinder still Ike's to dig in at all the wrong places.

Carried a 3" model 65 round butt for over ten years, the best carry gun I ever used. Carried it on the job in a pancake and never had any issues with comfort, and it had the best trigger I've ever had aside from my CS-1 3" which was worked by S&W as you know. Keep your 627, the ones I've shot have been phenominal. It's a great investment.

What about one of the special edition 3-5-7 model L-Frames in 3"? It's not an N-Frame, but it has the unfluted cylinder, and 3" is pretty close to 2-5/8". Nice looking guns.

Have you tried to carry the 5" barrel? It seems like the extra 2 1/2" of barrel would not make that much difference. I carry a full size 1911 and also an officer 1911 and the extra barrel length does not seem make a lot of difference. Maybe buy a holster where they allow you to swap it back for a different model? Just a thought.

Default Airing my ignorance...

How many of the brethern here have actually experienced a problem with a S&W frame lock revolver? I did a quick search and found one report where somebody said his steel-frame had spontaneously locked when he dropped it about four feet onto a concrete floor. Massad Ayoob wrote a nice piece about his take on it which you can find at Massad Ayoob >> Blog Archive >> INTERNAL GUN LOCKS. He mentioned that report and that he'd heard of a number of stories regarding light alloy frame revolvers locking that way when fired with extremely hot loads, but had done a lot of that kind of shooting with one he's owned for years and never had an issue. His solution (and mine) is to have and carry the old-style revolvers for social purposes and keep the others for target and hunting, but, like most people who carry a wheelgun for self-defense, we're both clearly suspenders & belt types. He also discusses the wisdom, or lack thereof, of removing the lock on a carry gun. It's worth a read. Meanwhile, from what I've seen, most of the "spontaneous lock" stories out there that I could find were things that happened to the second cousin of somebody the teller met in a bar. I'd be interested in firsthand accounts.

Just a thought.

I've tried... with a sport coat I can pull it off iwb... clearing the 5" barrel is another story... I think because of the design of the n frame the overall length and profile is just a different monster than the 1911

I've seen a few first hand account online (can't find em at the moment)... but it never bothered me in the way that I thought for sure it would fail... it's more of the principle of it that I couldn't get over.

But that being said, I de-locked a pc 637 I had back in the day, just because I wanted to take it apart and while I was in there figured I might as well go ahead and eliminate the possibility of it happening (it's now my dads carry gun).

I like to know how things work and have always enjoyed taking things apart, learning what relationship parts have to each other how they work in detail, and putting them back together...
I'm no engineer but I would like to think I have a decent understanding on what is a good design/build and what isn't...and the overall design and build of the IL and it's hairwidth spring (thinner than the slide release spring on a Beretta 92... and that is a damn skinny spring) that keeps it from springing at an in opportune time doesn't inspire any confidence...

IMO a 627 even with a snub would be to big to comfortable carry because it still is an N frame. Get yourself a 640-1 for carry and keep the 627 just because you might kick yourself for letting it go.
I have a 627-5 four inch Pro that stays in the safe and doesn't get carried because of its size and weight. I just had to have an 8 round revolver.

Let's keep this thread on the original topic. It is starting to turn into a debate on the internal lock and we certainly don't need to hear any more opinions on that subject or it will be closed.

I am fortunate to own both a 3inch 66 and a 686 CS-1, 3 inch. Both are great for carry. I really like the added ejector length for kicking out .357 Rds. Both are a little easier to conceal than the PC 627 but I do love that gun and would not mind owning one of them.
