I got my letter today! Thanks Roy Jinks!
I got the letter back today. Apparently I have some sort of Model 13 that is marked Model 10. (Sorry they are sideways, I'm an idiot when it comes to computers)

Cool letter. When you tell everyone you have a 3" .357 model 10-8 and they challenge you, just show it to them...should be good for winning a few bets .

Interesting - It maybe my ignorance but it looks like a round butt vs. square butt to me??? The Letter mentions square butt. I could be looking at the letter and the revolver side-ways in my brain. LOL

I have always held that the only fault of the Model 10 was that it was not chambered in 357. Thanks for "fixing" that! Good find!

Mr. Jinks got a letter to me thanks to my bud SASSERBERANGER (Thom) in like 3 weeks. a lettered S&W is a very cool thing. my 60-1 turned out to be an Ashland gun that i picked for $300... opening that letter was better than my 1st degree that came to my house in the same fashion. thanks for the share, and enjoy that revo!

Trivia.... The letter states the OP's M13 shipped to Banger L. P. (Limited Partnership) in Birmingham AL. That's a large distributor, perhaps best known on this forum for their 102712, a 3-inch Model 66-3 of which they had over 5,000 made beginning in 1988. You see a lot of them with BBN and BBT serial numbers.
Banger is still around and distributing Smith and Wessons. Here's a portion of their mission statement I copied from their web site.....
"Bangers focuses its efforts toward the independent stocking dealer who is fully committed to the shooting industry. We recognize that if our industry is to survive and prosper in the future, the independent stocking dealer will continue to be a keystone of Bangers' and the industry's success. It is with this in mind that Bangers has placed great emphasis on building our organization to effectively meet the needs of these retailers."

So the OP has a round butt Model 10-8 in .357 butt the letter says it is a Model 13 Square butt. So Roy has confirmed from the records that it is a Smith & Wesson .357. Am I the only person that has a problem with this. Now before someone gets their butt up on their shoulders, no I am not faulting Roy for anything, he is just calling them as he sees them.

When you are turning out millions of similar guns and there is a mistake every few years, I'd be shocked if there weren't more, especially in the 50's, 60's, & 70's when they were cranking them out pretty fast.

Most of us know mismarked guns are a fairly common occurrence. So, yeah, it's no big deal. Wait a day or two and someone will be along with another one.
The question I'd have is - - how was the gun sold? Was it sold as a Model 13? If "yes", then no harm no foul. The buyer got what he paid for.
If it was sold as a Model 10, then there could be cause for concern. ("I paid for a 38, but got a 357 instead. Woe is me.") To bad the original factory box does not survive. Then we would know.

muddocktor- thanks for fixing the pics. The next time I'm in south LA (New Iberia/Abbeyville) coffee is on me.
I would give anything to have the box, but we all know, that ain't gonna happen.
Now the million dollar question- What's it worth?
Thanks for everyone's input!!!

I'm more interested in the discrepancy between the pictured round butt revolver and the square butt revolver described in the letter. I'd take a quick look at the letter and say "Yeah, that's not this gun . . . "

The closing paragraph nixes that since the gun is clearly identified by the serial number,

Plenty of guns have been converted from square butt to round over the years...although on a Model 10 I'd presume it would need a refinish afterward?
On a related note, I have one of those 66-3s from Banger L.P. that shipped with a 3" barrel. Sadly - the previous owner swapped it for a 2.5"...

I'm going to e-mail Roy and ask about the "square butt" mentioned. I'll pull the grips and look again for the star indicating a factory re-blue, but this thing is perfect and looks unfired/unmolested.

What caliber is marked on the barrel, and does it chamber Magnum ammo, or only 38 Special ammo? If the cylinder is cut for 38 Special, it will not chamber Magnum, and if that is the case, I would not try to shoot Magnum ammo out of this gun.
The record keeping is messed up. Don't rely on the letter, rely on what is in your hand. Roy can only tell you what the records show, and the records on this one are messed up.

How the barrel is marked is pretty important, I know of individuals that have opened up Model 10 chambers to accept the .357. If it is marked Mod 10, and it has the barrel marked 38 S&W Special, that is one possibility. If it is barrel marked .357 Magnum, then it's a mis-mark.

Regarding the square butt vs. round butt, Mr. Jinks is always willing to correct an oversight or fix a typo, and provide at no cost a revised letter. This is usually done very quickly. OP, I would not hesitate to contact him if you have any additional information or concerns.
