Default GS-7 route to a 5'' M-29 (TX Wagon Train commemorative)

I always thought a 5'' 29 would be great but there are very few.

Would it be a relatively easy project to get a TX wagon train commemorative and have it converted? I read the barrels are .429, so it'd just be a matter of having the cylinders reamed I presume.

The question has been asked before, and Roy Jinks has stated it should not be done due to different heat treatment of non-Magnum frames. I wouldn't see any problem with a .44 Special cylinder and warmish loads, however.

If I were really jonesing for a 5" .44 Magnum, I'd get a 6" or longer 629 from the period after the enhancement (-4, I think) and have a good gunsmith cut it down. It's a working gun to me, so any damage to collector value is a non consideration. The original 5" are relatively scarce and cost a ton.

The idea is fine - just don't take it to a gunsmith who won't crown it correctly and put the front sight back on correctly. Its not all that hard (obviously), but the guys who will do the job right aren't legion. A Weigand front sight isn't doing the job right.
