317 Help
Hey guys, I am new to the forums but not S&W. I purchased a 317 last week cleaned it, read the manual and then went to the range and put Mini Mags through it. (well tried) Unfortunately I didn't read any of the previous forums about mini mags and some CCI rounds that cause the cylinder to bind up. Anyway like the others I was upset and called CS to have a postage slip sent over. Then i read the forums and understood it was an ammo issue. My question is, should i still send in the gun? it appears only after 16 rounds the cylinder face has the aluminum allow scratched off and a minor gauge appears on the cylinder face. Thanks guys love the other topics on here

Sent my 317 back due to the same reasons. They replaced the cylinder. It still has problems with CCI mini mags, but shoots Federal cheap ammo fine. Good luck.

This is just a characteristic of the 317. The issue varies with the ammo used and rate of fire. A range gun it is not. I can usually get 2 cylinders full before the problem crops up. IMHO, it's a small price to pay for the ideal kit or camp gun.
Repairs: I've seen folks send their 317s back to have new aluminum cylinder fitted only to have the same problem crop up. Other times S&W chose to fit stainless cylinders, either on their own choice or at the request of the customer. Naturally, the SS cylinder adds significant weight to the gun. You need to figure out what purpose your 317 fills. I for one don't plan on any sustained firefights with my 317. I appreciate the ultra light weight.

I for sure see what you mean, I bought it originally as a range gun but wish I had done my research a little more maybe the 43C might have been a better choice I may go with the stainless cylinder if they allow my request, and considering that's the most functioning part so SS is easier to maintain
