Model 60 with Ivories

I looked at this yesterday and am wondering if the grips are S&W or aftermarket. They appear to have been with this Mod 60 for a very long time. What are the odds that it came from the factory this way? Is there any way to tell if these are S&W grips other than the letter route? I think the Mod 60 is from '82-84, it's a no-dash ser number A*R40**. Asking $795.

The gun looks great with those ivories. Chances are highly unlikely that it shipped with them. Having said that, a letter is the only way to know for sure.

Hard to beat a model 60, for it's intended purpose; but I personally am not familiar enough with the characteristics of ivory; (the look of the striations and the "feel") to be comfortable having the grips as the deciding factor to buy.

The grips DO look good on that revolver though. More than I would have thought, on stainless finish.

Even if a letter states that the firearm shipped with wood grips, that does not necessarily mean the Ivories are not factory.

However, just looking at the way the top of the grip fits the frame and the bottom of the grip is not radiused to match the revolver, I am almost certain those are aftermarket.

Ivory grips are very difficult to obtain now. If you like it, I would buy it just because of the ivory. To me, that is a very good price since it has the ivory grips!

If their real ivory the grips would be worth the asking price.

From what I've read about ivory grips, the last state you could even sell them in was N.C. and I think that ended a year or so ago. Heard you could sell any gun with the grips on it, but couldn't sell the grips alone.

Could be 100% wrong, you know how things you read on the net goes.

Having just today conversed with a custom stocks maker who specializes in Ivory he informed me that ALL interstate commerce of Elephant Ivory is now banned. Guns with Ivories on them however can be sold interstate and new Ivory stocks can be sold within a State of residence with proper evidence of residency and if not in conflict with that States Law. Go figure.

CZU, as I noted in an earlier post I know very little about ivory, but there is an odd little aspect of those grips.

Both the right and left panels have almost identical lines in them.
One long line through the screw hole, and one shorter curved line nearer the toe of the grip.

While lines in ivory are a characteristic of the material, it seems unusual both sides would have nearly identical marks.
I also do not see any of the lines made on elephant ivory at a right angle cut. Like at the butt of the grip.

Those are called "schreger lines", which show a pattern, when elephant ivory is cut and shaped. Of course no one said they were "elephant" ivory, and there are more than a few different types of ivory.

Whatever they are, they sure look good on that Smith. Good luck with it.
