Model 28-3 Question
Did some of the last model 28's come with the new cylinder release like this one or is it a replacement?

Not sure of its date of birth (N9597XX), but my 28-3 has a flat latch. I would suspect that some of the later ones may have the "newer" style as supplies of the flat style diminished.

It wouldn't surprise me if it were a replacement.

I'm pretty sure they all came with the older style latch but thanks for the pic. I like the new style latch and wondered what one would look like on an old N-frame.

The "Nike" thumb piece first came into common use in 1994. In a few years it was near universal. I've never seen a M28-3 that was newer than 1984. (Admittedly, I haven't seen many -3's, period). So, I'd say "Unlikely", to that Nike latch being original.

It is a 28-3 serial no N9582XX. I called S&W and asked the brilliant person I got in customer service. Answer I got was mine was "probably" in the last year of production and it is possible that a newer style latch was used. I saw another one at a gun show last year with the newer latch and owner told me he got the same answer from S&W. His was a 6 inch and told me he knew the original owner and was 99.9% sure it had not been replaced. I also saw another post yesterday where someone had seen one on Armslist with the newer latch. It seems to me to be too much of a coincidence to see several like this. How many cylinder latches get replaced? Doesn't seem to me to be a part that would break or need replacing.

The Highway Patrolman was discontinued in the mid-1980s. The MIM thumbpiece did not appear until the early-to-mid 1990s, a decade later, thus it is impossible it's an original part.

If you will simply refer to SCSW4 the Model 28 was discontinued in 1986, and the MIM thumbpiece appeared on other S&W models in 1997, so, NO, no Model 28 of any dash would have ever been produced with the late style thumbpiece. This isn't to say one could not have been fit to the gun post 1997, but it wasn't original.
