About to pull the trigger
On a brand-new 686 4"!
I've seen mentioned the earlier 686s ( I presume no dash and/or -1) had a stainless steel trigger and hammer, flash chromed, which would not support a trigger job. Later models had case hardened steel hammer and triggers, and the latest ones, the MIM parts.
After shooting it in, should I decide I would benefit from attention to the trigger, will the MIM parts support a trigger job?
That's providing I don't stumble across a pristine 686-3 or 4 just begging me to take it home. Scarce. Hen's teeth, cold day in Texas. Dream on!

Yes, a MIM trigger will support a trigger job. A MIM trigger is also less likely to need one as MIM allows more dimensional precision, as molded.
Adios,

I have found the MIM parts to be great for trigger work as they are normally already very smooth.

I have had my 686-6 6" for about a month. I really like the critter. Only problem is getting it away from my wife. Her poor Ruger MK II has been idle since the 686 came along.
All I did for the trigger was swap in a 13# rebound spring. SA trigger is about 3.25# -- just right in my opinion. DA pull is heavy at about 9# but smooth.
So, I suggest you pull that trigger on the new 686!!!!

I have a 686-6, 5" Pro-Series. It is my newest gun period. Feb 2016 production. The trigger is nice & smooth! Have a 4" 586 no dash, and a 686-3, 6". All are keepers. Bob

I have the 686-4, and while I really like it, I think I prefer the frame mounted firing pin. I don't know which version has that, but I've got a couple of model 66, and one has the frame mounted firing pin, and one has it on the hammer. They both shoot just fine, I just prefer the one style.
As far as smoothing the trigger on the older models, I've not had any problems. Lighter springs can do wonders. Then I do some extremely light stoning, along with a generous application of moly disulfide. It's not python smooth, but it's very nice.

12 or 13 pound rebound spring does wonders for a S&W revolver trigger.

I have a 686-6 4" and the trigger is excellent. I have had many people at the range shoot this gun and first question is who did the trigger work, and I tell them that's the way it came from the factory, they are impressed. This gun is my absolute favorite amoungst all my handguns. We have a 6" model also and that trigger is just as good, but I prefer the 4".

The early 686s had carbon steel hammers and triggers that were "flash chromed"; no problem having trigger work done on these parts.
When you get your new 686, personally I'd use it a while before deciding it needs any work. You may like it right out of the box.
