629 classic grip change
I have a Smith & Wesson Model 629 round butt frame that I am wanting to change the grip out on. It's a nice feeling grip but it's too thick in the back strap for my liking. I have larger than average hands but yet it seems like quite a reach to the trigger with this particular grip. Has anybody else changed out their grip for this reason? If so, which grip have you put on that you like?

I am trying a Pachmayr Diamond Pro on my 325 TR which is a round butt N frame. I have the Diamond Pro on my J frame round butt and it feels great to me. I am hoping it feels just as good on the N frame. Attached is a pix on the J frame.

If you want to go with a set of wood stocks, I would recommend a set of the retro combat round to square conversion Ahends like I installed on my 629-3 Classic. They feel good to the hand and even with hot loads they don't punish my hands. Here is what mine looks like with them on for you to look at:

Heh, I just had to go look it up from posts from long ago here on the forums. It is Moradillo wood and it's a quite nice looking wood, IMO.

I put Pachmayr Decelerator grips on a 329-NG (good grip but it's still a bruiser!) and Ahrends retro targets on a 24-3 6.5" and a 624 4". Also consider the Pachmayr Compac for the N-frame RB. I have a set on my K-frame 13 and find them very comfortable.
Pics: 329 with Pach Decelerator, 24-3 with Ahrends Retro Target, 13-2 3" with Pach Compac.

You can't go wrong with a set of Hogue's on a 629 RB. S&W decided that was good enough for their flagship N frames, and that's what I have on my stainless shooters.

I had a set of the Compacs on my Terminator, and recently switched to the Diamond Pros. Haven't shot it with them yet, but I can tell I'm going to like them. I'm certain that the softer squishier material will take more of the "sting" out of shooting magnums in a short-barreled N-sized frame.

I found the factory Hogue mono grip to be too squishy, allowing the back strap to pound my palm. I like the way this Hogue pau ferro mono spreads out the recoil. It looks better than rubber. I have large hands, more palm, than fingers. The reach to the trigger is not bad. I really like this set-up.

The new rubber grips on the 629's are terrible.
I like the Hogue wood grips with finger grooves also. Even the standard rubber Hogue round to square butt conversion grips would be a major improvement over your factory grips.

My hands and fingers are thick, but I also have fairly short fingers. Makes for a problem finding grips that I like. The grips on my 629 Mountain Revolver below are my all time favorite N frame grips, but they are butt ugly. I also like the no finger groove Hogue rubber grips on my model 69. They make these for the N frame too, I need to try a set.

You are right, that looks awesome! Although, I have a hard time believing it is less shock absorbing then a Hogue mono rubber.

It's not so much about absorption of recoil, as it is about spreading it out. I feel that the rubber "gives" and allows the back strap to transmit the force. That piece of metal is thin. Wood doesn't deform, letting the recoil spread out over a bigger area, if that makes sense. I thought the rubber was more comfortable, for the first 6 rounds. Rounds 7-50, not so much. After that, I put the wood on, and haven't looked back.

I like the wood Hogue conversion grips with butt cap on my 629 6 1/2" Classic. I'm trying to decide if the Hogue laminated Rosewood is right for the 629-1. I'll decide after a range trip, hopefully this weekend.

I like the Altamont round butt target conversion grips. they are a modern style grip with old school looks. This is my 629-5 3" round butt with them.

Why on earth S&W makes all their N frames with round butts now, is beyond me, a real mistake IMHO.

That one is easy...
Because it is easy to make a round butt square using round-to-square conversion grips, but you can't make a square butt round easily.
By not making square butt models, they can give those that want them a square butt by changing the grips and they don't have to make as many different variations to have a round butt and square butt of the same model.

I love N frames square butts. My problem is that they don't fit my hand even with the few aftermarket grips I bought.Nothing wrong with the manufacturers of said grips, they simply didn't fit!And if you want to shoot good, you need grips that fit(not that I can shoot good but at least,if the grips fit,I'll know for sure which part I'll have to work upon myself to improve).
I had that old model 28-2 I had bought at a real cheap price($175CDN in 2010 dollars is in my book what seems like a bargain). It was carrying the Magna S&W grips. At the price I paid for the gun I figured''what the heck....let's give it a trial''.I put the Dremmel at work, sending particles of walnut flying up in my face trying to reduce the diameter of the bottom end of the grips to look somewhat like a ''Jordan''type of grip.
Guess what I ended up with? The ugliest grip any N frame in the world would wanna wear on but the most comfy ones I've ever felt for any N frame in my life.First time I showed up at the range with them,I was the joke on the firing line....'till I started piling up them .357 slugs accompanied with a full muzzle blast of H110 behind a 166gc swc cast bullet all in the 9 or 10 ring at 20 yds.Guys stopped laughing at me and realizing I was better quitting while I was ahead, stashed the 4'' 28 away and started with something else.
But them grips are the best fitting ones I've ever had.Now if I could only find somebody who could carve me some for my 629 that wouldn't look so...hmmm...so ''homemade''.

That's OK for you guys with tiny hands but, with normal hands doesn't work for me at all!

How'zat?
The round-to-square conversion grips are generally the same size as regular square butt grips - aren't they? I only own one round-butt K frame - a 67-6. It came with two pairs of square butt conversion grips - the original Goodyear S&W finger-groove style and a set of Crimson Trace. Both seem like they are about the same size as any other square-butt K-frame grips.
So I don't quite understand how the frame shape under the grips makes any difference if the external dimensions of the grips are the same?
Sounds like you just haven't found a set that fit your hand. No size or style that S&W chooses as their "standard" is going to fit everyone. We all just have to find what works for us.
And FWIW, I wear a size XL glove. My fingers aren't all that long for the size of my hands but they are pretty thick (size 11 ring). My mitts would best be described as "large and blocky". I may not be able to palm a b-ball, but my hands are anything but "tiny".

Here is the rosewood from Smith & Wesson I ordered 5 years ago for my 325 Night Guard. Combat and wood improved the comfort and control over the stock rubber grip .

I placed the rubber grip from the S&W 500 Magnum on my 629. I found that it works really well.

That's what I have. It pained me to take the beautiful Talo edition grips off, but it also pained me to shoot full power magnums with them on. Way too skinny, and your hand gets nothing but backstrap.
