Sold my Sig P938 and bought a Model 60 Pro Series. Partly because I never really warmed up to Condition One carry in the SAO Sig. But I really like the size of the J-Frame and 357 for carry and 38 for the range.

I can't make myself carry a 1911-format gun in Condition 1 either. It's either a revolver or DA/SA for me.

Bought a Glock 47 two weeks ago. For defensive carry, yes, this is a superior platform to a J Frame, but not better for defensive carry than say my 586 L-Comp. The 47 is certainly an easier carry.

But for defensive or EDC, my service Glock (Model 35) is better than my 627 UDR, and my Wilson Combat EDC X9 is better than my 586 L-Comp. So unless in the woods, I've pretty much set revolvers down for now. There is a TRR8 with light on my nightstand.

I would say the generic answer in this S&W revolver forum would be "NO"!! The single stack 9mm auto will NEVER take the place of the defensive carry revolver.

Now for reality... In my very revolver friendly world the single stack auto has won.

I generally carry a mid-sized semi auto as my EDC, however when I leave the house and want to carry lightweight it is no longer one of my small revolvers. It is likely a single stack 9mm GLOCK 43 carried AIWB (gasp, he said GLOCK!).

My J-frame revolvers get carried around the compound, the larger frames go with me on hunting trips, and they all make it to the range.

EDC for me is now an auto.

I carry this most of the time I'm not running around in uniform with a 4 inch 686-6 on my hip and a 642-2 in my pocket. I would love a modern (no lock) Model "312" chambered in .38 +P or even .357 Mag. Until then, this rides my belt with the 642-2 in my pocket or on my ankle. (I HATE ankle holsters!)

Nope. It's a 1963-vintage Model 12-2 Airweight KA-frame. DID THE SINGLE STACK 9MM KILL THE CARRY REVOLVER?

Right now the single stack 9mms are the "in thing" for concealed carry, it wasn't that long ago that .380s were all the rage, and .40s/.45s before that. All it will take is some publicized instance where a 9mm doesn't work or some new wonder gun to shift the status quo to something else, be it back to the .40 or something else.. The revolver may be long in the tooth but it hasn't gone away, if it was truly dead why would Colt come out with the Cobra or Kimber the K6s?

I pocket carry a 442 the vast majority of the time because it's convenient and doesn't really require me to dress around the gun, I can't do that with a shield or a G43, and I trust a .38+p more than a .380.. I do have a g26 for my adventures into the more interesting parts of town but I don't carry it all that often

Personally I think the revolver is the safest and most dependable handgun ever made even to this present day.
I do believe hand weapons in the lines of a handgun will someday make all present handguns totally obsolete. I think like in the movies they will be a form of the ray guns. There probably will no longer be a need for reloading ammo because ammo of today will be like the old dial telephones, a thing of the past.

I typically carry my MP 40c iwb. Just picked up a 638 for those days when carrying the 40c wont work. I like the 638. I also have a 19-2 4 inch but do not carry that or my 1911.

My answer to the thread's question is no. I love my PM9 and Smith & Wesson 39, but now that I have a snubby Model 12, I'll start putting it the rotation as well. They all serve a purpose.

2) Here's the case of Jason Hendrix (off duty, in a shopping center). He had a 5 shot S&W model 36, the suspect had a Glock 17. Hendrix shot the suspect 4 times out of five, twice hitting him in the chest, and then his gun went dry. The suspect shot Hendrix in the face, guts, arm, pelvis, and tried to execute him as he laid on the ground. Shots Fired: Palm Desert, California 03•30•1996 - Article - POLICE Magazine

3) The death of NJSP trooper Lamonaco prompted the dept. to switch from 6 shot 357 magnums to the 9 shot HK P7M8. Lamonaco was shot by environmental terrorists who wielded browning hi-powers against the trooper's 6 shot revolver.

4) The ISP switched to the S&W model 39 (8 shot 9mm). In that time period, there were at least one, if not a few, cases where troopers would have certainly died if all they had were the 6 shot wheelguns. There was one case where the suspect counted 6 shots from the trooper's pistol, and after the sixth, charged the trooper with his shotgun. The trooper shot the suspect with his last few rounds. The suspect told his attorney he swore the cop's gun was empty.

5) There's the case in California, where at least one trooper was killed after his K-frame magnum ran dry. When he took the knee to reload, the suspect executed him with a 9mm before the trooper could close the cylinder.

That's just five that I remember off hand. there are many more cases where 5-6 were not enough.

Everything you cite here is more than twenty years old. Case #5 is from the early 70's and is more of a training issue than a gun issue. The CHP officers were found with their empties in their pockets just as they did at the range. No speed loaders either.

As far a #4 goes there is also a case where ISP troopers shot a subject 18 times with their 9mm's before another trooper put him down with a shotgun.

As for the NJ State Police they were issued .38 Special RNL, not .357.

I spent 25 years in LE in New Mexico and don't know of 1 case where 6 was not enough.

Not to mention stopping power. One or two rounds out of your 340PD has as much as an entire 7-9 round single stack nine. And you can argue "modern ammunition" all you want....357mag is king of the hill!

I'm sorry guys but I love my revolvers and carry everywhere. Is 5 enough well I'm sure since I'm not looking for a gun fight. I'm not trying to be a hero but only to get my family and my self out of harms way. If we look at statistics then no 1 gun is enough. All those are cops correct? I'm not a cop (I'm not hating on cops I'm a firefighter and love them!!) I'm not there to save the world only myself and my family and friends. I feel 5 is enough to get the heck out of dodge. I do have a bigger gun when I go to cities but Day to day activity I have a revolver.

I doubt whether the revolver will ever be 'killed-off', so-to-speak. Just two different schools of thought, to address the same problem, that's all. Wheelies have the edge in the pure-power department, and auto-pistols with capacity. It all boils-down to personal taste, and utility.

I have a few revolvers and carried a J frame on me for about 25 years.
But I put the Mod 60 away and started carrying a single stack 9 mm.
I can have more rounds in the gun and on my person than I ever could with the J frame.

I hit well with the semi-auto and reloads are beginning and the end of revolver/auto debate for me.

I'm 53 years old. I love my revolvers. Still have a model 66-2 4" barrel I bought in 1985 when I turned 21. I had been out of shooting for a couple decades. Got back into it as my children became adults and started moving out.

In January 2016, I bought an SP101 with 3" barrel (.357). Thought if I ever wanted to carry (hiking, etc.) this would be a good choice. And I always wanted one since they were introduced in '89.

January 2017, I'm at the range with a couple guys in my shooting group. I shot their Glocks - a 17 and a 42. First time I ever shot a Glock. I was hitting better with both compared to my SP101 (or my 6906).

In March 2017 I bought a Glock 43. I just started to carry more regularly a few weeks go. I carry the Glock 43. Easier to conceal/slimmer profile - even with a Pearce +1 or Vickers +2. And I'm more accurate with it. I like the trigger on it (compared to the SP101). Also, I do not want to carry anything with a barrel less than 3" for accuracy and velocity.

Even though studies show I might only need 3 rounds in a "situation" -the fact that I can go 7+1 or 8+1 is a bonus compared to the Ruger's 5.

Again, I love my 66 and my SP101 - but the Glock 43 IWB just makes more sense for me if/when I carry. Now if I'm in the desert, the SP101 OWB or my 66 in a shoulder holser might be preferred choices.

The single 9's will not replace my revolvers, but the single nine Glock 43 makes more sense for me for EDC.

I see a lot of carry revolvers in the S&W catalog, I will soon carry a S&W 340PD.

I've been going back and forth between CCW-ing my beloved CZ "P-01" and this 625... Both carry well in their own holster and a "BeltMan" BullHide belt with the internal stiffener. When the 625 is carried it's easy to put a full Moon Clip in each front pocket in a pair of Khaki Cargo Pants/Shorts. I certainly don't feel undergunned with the 625 either considering how easy/smooth a reload is with the moon clips. Cylinder refills are just as easy with my semi-auto's. I can't argue with the power of a 255 grain hard cast lead pill @ 1100fps either in the 625. I have been shooting these BB .45Supers for years now and it's my favorite woods carry round by far... that's quickly becoming an all around carry pistol/round as well too.

I agree. While a 1911 in Condition 1 is perfectly safe, I "feel" better with a revolver or a DA/SA semi-auto.

While I prefer a revolver as my primary carry, I like to back it up with a trusted semi-auto.

340 Pro Series and 360 PD AirLite

My J frames are preferred when concealability is my paramount concern. but I also have a 547 in 9mm that carries well ISWB Appendix carry at the 2:00 position.

K frame 547 3" heavy barrel

The 547 weighs more than the J frames and is a bit bulkier but points very well, and is a great instinctive shooter. It would definitely be what I would want to have in hand in any self defense situation.

But I would also like to have a semi-auto to back it up if 6 is not enough to settle things. Reloading a revolver in a gunfight is a good way to get shot so I rely on a NY reload if things ever get that bad.

547 & 915 when "going heavy"

360 AirLite and 3914 DAO when "going light"

Of course there are times that a single weapon is all I choose to carry and in those instances I'll likely go with a semi-auto. The Black Pearl has become a favorite:

4516 Custom Carry Melted and Melonited

With this .45 and one spare mag I feel quite prepared for whatever I am confronted with. Other semi's I'm comfortable with are my 457 set up just like the Black Pearl with Big Dot combat sights and my 3914 DAO, also equipped with Big Dots:

3914 DAO w/ Boker auto opener.

So in my case the single stack semi-auto has not replaced my wheel guns as primary carry, but they have added to it and enhanced my ability to defend myself and loved ones from the evil that exists out there.

I typically carry my 637 airweight over a single stack 9mm only because it's more comfortable. I can go either way on this, but I really like revolvers.

Next time you go into your favorite LGS look at the handgun display. Unless you are in some alternate universe the number of semi autos on display vs the number of revolvers is huge.
The reason is simple. They dedicate display space proportionally to what is selling the best.
I am still a wheel gun fan and that is my preference. But the fact that semi autos dominate the market is obvious.

Most likely this ^^^^^^^ I picked up a Kahr 380 and it replaced my 38-3 for summer use. I wear shorts and T's as much as the weather allows.
The CW 380 is light, flat, has a terrific revolver like trigger, and no safety to fumble with. Hides better than any of my J's

Carry what you will, it's still a great country.

I was this close to taking advantage of the Walther $100 rebate on the PPS M2, one of the best single stack 9mm available IMO. For around 300 bones, why not? Well, because I decided that a single stack isn't enough of an improvement over a J-Frame to commit to a whole new platform. I'm not interested in bringing criminals to justice; I just need something to give me a little running room if need be. Most of the time, a J-Frame should suffice. And if not, a single stack isn't going to fare much better.

I sometimes carry a Sig P250 sc with 12+1 rounds on board, more than twice my model 64, and more than 2.5 times the payload of my .38 J-Frames. I rarely carry it, though. Lately I've been thinking that if I'm going to a place where a J-Frame may not be enough, do I really need to go in the first place? The answer, 99% of the time, is no.

I think that revolvers still have a place and aren't going anywhere but also believe that most people, especially those new to shooting, wanting a concealed carry handgun will choose a semi-auto. The reasons are many and have been repeated often.

I love my revolvers but for EDC, I prefer my SIG P938 over my S&W J frame. The SIG is flatter and just easier for me to conceal in my pocket carry holster. The same is true of carrying an extra magazine with six rounds as opposed to a speedloader with five or fumbling with a speed strip. The SIG has better sights and they are night sights to boot. The SIG is flawless (1800 + rounds with nary a hiccup) and super accurate. I can shoot it as well as my full size handguns out to fifteen yards. I could never do that with my J frame. I enjoy shooting 50-100 rounds at the range with the P938. I can't say that for the J frame unless I am using some of my own very light loaded reloads. Lastly, I like 1911's and the P938 is much like a mini 1911.

All of that said, my main range gun is my S&W 617. I visit the indoor range where I am a member about twice and week and when I look at what others are shooting or bringing to their concealed carry class, there just aren't many revolvers.

My wife objects to guns that "shoot back." A semiautomatic is right out as far as she's concerned. This is her "little gun for my wife."

I believe this article starts out with a reported "fact" that is not factual. IME, few officers carried snub nose revolvers, 4", 6" and 5" being far more common. Detectives and other plain-clothed personnel carried snub nosed revolvers.

The only advantages i see to a revolver is being able to shot thru a pocket (no cycling slide) and its dummy proof (no racking of the slide just shoot). I own a 642 that my wife carries because its just an easy gun to operate. But thats where is stops. The double action of this gun and the recoil is almost too much. I would much rather have a Shield which is what i carry. Far easier to shoot, extra 2 rounds in 9mm and far more accurate in my hand without the dbl action trigger pull.

I don't think anything will ever 'kill' the carry revolver. It's a tool that continues to work, and work well.

While I have nothing against semi-autos (I own 3 Glocks and a Shield), I prefer revolvers because 1) for me, they are easier to carry/conceal, and 2) I can shoot them better than an auto.

These are the two that protected me for many years; Colt 357 for duty, S&W Model 49 for B/U and off duty. I still carry the M49 daily... it just works.

Killed more than that: I carried and still love the pictured PC 627 for years; but a J Frame was for in close and only had 62.5% the capacity of 627, so I always hassled with a belt holster rather than pocket carry.

Now I belt carry the G-17 and when not holstered up (even as an 8-shot the 627 is 44% the capacity), I will pocket carry a G-43, as for me, the 43 can reach out farther than a J frame and with 28% more capacity chambered.

I am now firmly resolved to go the other direction. I have a Kahr P9 and Sig 238 that I would like to replace with old-school steel J-frames. Something along the lines of a model 36/60 or one of the DAO or humpback variants if I stumble across one. I don't necessarily regret purchasing the semi-autos, but I have often found myself wishing they were wheel guns. My wife loves the little 380 and would protest if she knew I was seriously thinking of selling it, but she is somewhat recoil sensitive and can't shoot it worth a damn. She lacks the strength to rack a slide reliably – in particular on pistols with stiff springs like the P9. And I don't trust that she'll remember to take the 238 off safe or how clear a jam in the heat of the moment. She's just not into guns enough to retain this basic training. And as far as I'm concerned, I would prefer the heavier loads that can be used with 38 spl and the greater power that can be tapped as a reloader in that gray area between 38 spl and 357 magnum without having to step up to full magnum power (I've got a K-frame for that). Also, snake shot works better in a wheel gun. FWIW, I think the 9mm is a bit overpowered for the cartridge size and modern 380 is approaching this point, in particular for use in ever-smaller and lighter platforms. Also, as a reloader, I hate chasing my brass at the range only to find that someone else has already snapped it up.

While I was preparing for Irma's impending onslaught last week, I was kicking myself thinking that I ought to sell my pristine model 629 that only gets used for target practice and use the proceeds to buy two J-frames. However, I don't care if I packed it away and never pulled the trigger on that beast again, I'd miss the hell out of it. The compact and sub-compact semi-autos on the other hand, I'd miss those about as much as a hurricane...

Shoot Well My Friends
Good choice on both that semi auto Smith and revolver! I sometimes carry (2) "J" frames; one in my strong side front pocket in a DeSantes Nemesis and the other in a Bianchi at 4 O'clock with a couple speed strips. Both filled with BB 158gr soft cast +P's... Nothing like a New York reload! Holster choice is paramount just as much as practicing your draw. And lots of people are leaving the knife out of the equation. A good auto-blade knife, with a nice pocket/waist/belt clip is in its own right a formidable weapon at bad breath distances. Glad to see you're carrying a blade as well! Mine is a Kershaw with a 3.5" Tanto blade. Good choice on that "tac" belt as well. I have (2) that exact style. I find that it cinches up nicely with my holsters and is nice and wide to distribute the weight. I wear this style when I'm carrying the lighter revolvers but a BullHide Belt with an internal stiffener when carrying the Smith 625 or the 1911 Commander because they weigh 40+ ounces.

Hello all! Personally, i do not think that the CCW revolver is dead. Proof to that, the few manufacturers that have been making such, still do. Who do they sell to if the trend is dead? on the other hand, the single stack 9mm has gained popularity as a CCW, but IMHO, not in the expence of the snubbies, but in the expence of the bigger double stack pistols that are out there, and certain people are pulling away from for obvious reasons. And lets not forget, that the single stack 9mm is not ground breaking news. they have existed all along, with much better speciments that those available today, (S&W 3913 -3914 and all their dao versions come to mind). I believe, it is rather the reliability of the offered ammunition these days, that makes small pistols good CCW candidates. Just like the semiautomatic shotguns in the past and their malfunction suffering. I see half a century old remington 1100 and browning Auto 5 operate better now with cheap shells, than they did with good shells 20 years ago. That said, I thing the revolver is not going anywhere. But I have been wrong before! LOL! :-)

Here it's the single-stack 9mm that's dead for I don't carry one. Revolvers, in the form of K-Frame, D-Frame (Colt), or occasionally J-Frame, and .45 1911 guns are favored.

An outfit called Detroit Kydex on eBay as "gunholsters" is where I got the one the 915 is wearing.

The K frame revolver's I got from "pinna09" also on eBay.

The holsters have the type of plastic clip I prefer. I don't care for the typical steel clip, I find they can come off my belt on draw at times.

What I look for is a clip that hooks onto the belt positively and can not be drawn with the weapon. (how embarrassing)

Never bring a knife to a gunfight, unless it's a back-up to your gun. A good, one handed operation, knife is just one more tool in the tool box.

My appendix carry revolver is first to fight, but I prefer to have a semi-auto as backup to it. If a single stack, like my 3914DAO or 4040PD it can ride up front, weak hand side at 11:00.

A bigger or thicker semi like the Black Pearl, 457, 915, 59xx, etc would be small of the back carry, or in a belt holster at 4:00.

I have an LCR9 Pro and a G43. I also have a 642 and a 442 pro. I also have an LCR9. In the spirit of this thread, can you guess which is my go to?

@ the OP, and question, the long and short, NO.

I typically carry a 3" or 4" .44 mag. Sometimes a 6" barrel. I understand that there was a sense of personal defense, for choosing the 9MM...and the rounds are cheaper. However, let me relate a story.

My family has several hunting cabins and land...heck, I can hunt deer on my own property. Very blessed to have so many options between friends and family.

Well, about a year ago I visited with family and being a CCW permit holder, had my 642 on me, pocket carry and a 29-2 blued in my truck, stored properly.

Well, I got a bit turned around in the great woods on trails and had to use the restroom. Went about my business no issues. Hoped in my truck and as soon as I did and looked in the rear-view mirror...the biggest black bear I had EVER seen in my life walked across the trail, stopped, and looked towards me. Yeah, a 9MM or 38 is better than nothing if you needed it, I was glad I at least had something larger (.44 mag) that was somewhat accessible. Going on this family members property now I either CC or open carry (legal to do so here) the .44. No issues and the huge black bear just kept walking but was 'interested' in me and was giving me space but was plain' ol' curious.

If it were a life or death situation, in that case, I surely would not want a 9MM unless it scared it and the thing ran off. Note: I've noticed over the years that a truly big bear, black bear, will not run from a human but will be curious if in the middle of nowhere..............................
