Then, the Wilson crew ruled we had to make major if the gun used moonclips. My friend was so angry he has NEVER shot IDPA since!

I sold my PC version to a forum member who had a goal to own one of each S&W PC revolvers. I got $1000. for it.
Interesting and sad that the 646 never took off. I would have loved to kept the non PC 646 also, but the owner did not want to give up the 646 all together. He told me he also has a 610 (can't go wrong there), but his passion is for the .32 mag.

I shoot the factory 180 & 165 grain, but it's all together different firing in rapid succession (IDPA), concentrating to stay on target vs my leisurely target shooting. I shoot a 40 Shield (my EDC), so I can't imagine recoil on a 36 oz PC version negatively affecting me.

I'm feel very fortunate to finally acquire this gun (yes!!!), almost on the level of some one finally acquiring the RM! I just acquired a pre 27, so I'm creeping forward!

That's a very good question and I have found a couple of older links discussing that subject. Me, I love the 40, titanium cylinder, slab side, and the L frame.

I would buy a 610 N frame, but most likely would still shoot the .40 caliber. I am as fanatical as the .41 mag or 44 special cults!

I love how the 646 was set up by Smith & Wesson, but I also am all for those that want to modify or hop up their Smith's to their liking ala Elmer Keith.

Need info on a Model 646

646 reemed out to 10MM???

Default Picked up my 646 PC

Because of the Labor Day weekend, I didn't get around to picking up my 646 until today. Oh Happy Day!

Soon as I got home I pulled the grips and noticed how the strain screw had backed out and may have cause some of the light primer strikes the previous owner eluded to, with the thicker Rinz type moonclips he gave me.

I will hold off installing the Cylinder & Slide extended firing pin, until tomorrow, when I will put 100-200 rounds through, using primarily Ranch & the Rinz moon clips.

Default Side Plate - overall condition

I took the side plate off and the inside looked pretty clean aside from a little too much oil, which collected dirt. I gave it a cleaning but not all out, since I will be shooting tomorrow.

I am quite impressed with the quality of these S&W smooth combat grips! Beautiful and solid! I'm not sure what they came off but, they are dated 19 Dec 1988. Very solid, and beautiful, so thank you Smith & Wesson. Now, I'll have to buy a gun to wear them!

Talking Altamont Smooth Combats

So, I tried out the Altamont Smooth Combat grips, and they fit very nice, and felt very comfortable. I believe these are the original grips (at least they look like them), that came with the PC version of the 646.

Can't wait to hit the range tomorrow and see how it goes. I love the look and feel of these Altamont SC grips. I also tried the round to square set, but the right panel did not fit well and will need some filing, to snug up the upper right portion.

This gun will be on my night stand just so I can admire it!

Default Range Day

So I fired 205 rounds today of Blazer Brass 180gr FMJ, at the range today. I discovered I'm actually a little more accurate with this PC version, primarily because the smoother PC trigger action. Having 2oz less barrel than the full lug, non PC version, did make it seem like it may have had a little more recoil, but I was able to get back on target with the smooth trigger action.

I had 3 light primer strikes, of which 2 were on a single Ringz moon.clip and 1 on a Ranch moon clip. When I took the grips off to clean the weapon, I could see the strain screw backed out. I'll try some Locktite or a different screw.

At this point, I don't think a firing pin change is in order. I love the 646, and the Altamont Smooth Combats added to the looks and comfort! Couldn't be happier with the trade I made, to get this special revolver. Cheers!

Congrats on scoring a great revolver with an obvious following of shooters. Looking at your targets you did pretty good I can't imagine how much better you will shoot with " old man sights"lol .

Well thank you, for that great compliment. The 646, does seem to have a small but dedicated group shooters & collectors. Cheers!

The 646 is very unique and cool. Does anyone know if all (300?) of the non Performance Center 646's where shipped in the aluminum Performance Center case?

They were shipped with Smith & Wesson Aluminium case without the PC emblem. Like this one.

My non PC 646 came in the same case you have in the photo of the non PC case. Also made in China.

You have no idea what you're asking - you'll have to come over to dig it out.

I'm assuming I was wrong about it being a PC case based on the other posts; all I really remembered was that it came in an aluminium case. I'm so dense I didn't even know they made a non-PC metal case.

Default Non PC 646 for sale

I just saw one advertised at "the firing line" (Colorado), for $1375, with the "original paper box" (lol), and two sets, of grips.

Default Light hits!

If your light primer strikes persist, don't rush out to buy a new main spring strain screw. Take a "SPENT" primer, remove the anvil, leaving you with just the cup! Put the cup over the end of the strain screw and tighten!

Pretty creative solution, thanks for sharing that!

I already put locktite on the strain screw, and replaced the firing pin with a Cylinder & Slide extended pin (easy 15 minute change). Yesterday I put 180 rounds through it, no light primer strikes. I pulled the grips off and noticed the strain screw remained tightened down. Yay!!!

I'll put another approximately 200 through it Monday or Tuesday, just for the fun of it!

Well, I don't know if my advertising this 646 precipitated it's sale, but it sold shortly afterwards. Of course these guns become ghost, when offered for sale, lol!

I passed because I was so happy with my Performance Center, my mental justification was it did not have orignal grips, it did not have the aluminum case, etc., etc. Plus greed is a horrible thing (unless it involves buying guns)!

Default Non Performance Center 646

Well today, I went to unbox (at my FFL) my new non PC 646, that I bought sight unseen on line. When I asked the kid, how the gun looks, he simply said, "Dirty but it looks ok!" Good enough for me!

Arrow Non PC 646

Well, this gun is/was dirty, but otherwise very nice. It came with (I'm guessing, puzzled by the size) the original case, orignal grips, and an expended round. How sweet is that? I couldn't figure out the grips (no screw hole), but google told me it comes with a grip removal tool (ah!), which I'll have to order.

I am super stoked about this 646, it is beautiful and will be even more so when I get her out of jail. This is kind of too crazy and great for a forty fanatic like me.

First I thought I would never be able to get the PC version, then surprisingly a deal popped for my 631 (and non PC 646) requiring giving up my non PC. I never expected to own both, but now I do, and I got the complete package (pretty much), on the non PC. How sweet is that? Very!

Trigger double action, is no where near the PC version, but that is an easy fix. Target style hammer spur (though I don't ever shoot SA), is much nicer on non PC. Got some free dog hairs under the foam, left by the previous owner. Seems like a golden lab

Default Quick inspection & light clean

Bore looks great as did cylinder. Clearance .004 on forcing cone to cylinder (excellent, better than my PC version at .007). Metal looks great!

Did a light going over with Flitz and a few strokes of the chambers with nylon brushes.

Talking Compare the 2 Versions of the 646 Revolver

Here's a side by side of my two lovely 646's!

Well that's it for now! Any input is appreciated, especially about the case being that small. The case I had previously purchase (and returned) from S&W, for my previous non PC 646 was large like in my above previous posting.

Also, I didn't realize the Hogue grips, were designed as such, the one's I had purchase from Numrich were not quite the same at the butt of the gun. These stock Hogues are very cool, almost boot grip style. Very nice!

You might consider a brass or gold bead sight, which should drop right in with no extra work involved. I put one on my 629-3 and am happy with the improvement over standard ramp with orange insert.

I don't think I ever posted any pictures of the brass bead sight I ordered from S&W. And if I had, they would have disappeared during the recent Photobucket controversy. However, there should be some pictures of such sights on the forum (unless they were stored on Photobucket servers). A brass bead will work as well as a gold bead as long as you polish it once in a while. In general, I find that the brass/gold bead works well as long as there's a little light, in particular from behind you. I have never used a fiber optic sight, so I'm not sure which one would be easier to see in low light.

Kingsmoke,
Take a look at my post "moon clips for s&w mdl 646" and see if you would like the free moon clips for your 646 that I'm trying to give away.

Even though you mentioned that thread locker solved your problem, call S&W to order a new screw, if nothing else, just to have one handy. They only cost a couple bucks. Your issue may be a slightly worn tip of the screw. I had the same problem with my 66-2. The screws wear down, and sometimes people file them down as a cheap alternative to a real trigger job. When I called S&W, they sent me a new screw for the price of the shipping if I remember right. If the screw is the issue, you'll know right away because the new one will make the trigger feel a bit heavier, should eliminate the light primer strikes, and it shouldn't back out so quickly.

The primer cup trick works well if your strain screw is worn or has been filed down; how much heavier your trigger will feel after adding a primer cup will depend on how worn your strain screw is in the first place. However, I think of it as a temporary solution until a screw with the proper length can be obtained.

Good info., thanks! I do keep extra strain screws, however this one seemed to put the right pressure on the spring, so I went with the locktite, though I think either method would have worked. I also put in an extended firing pin, and now the gun is right where I want it.

Next up will be the front sight, which I'm considering the brass bead, that you mentioned. I also emailed HiViz, to see if they have any solutions to the dovetail sight on the PC version. The paint works great, but wears when cleaning the gun, and looks kinda ******!
