Default A standard barrel 4" 627-5. Not a 'grail' find, but close.

Been looking for a 627-5 with the 4" round barrel (product code 163357) for quite some time, but they are rarely available for sale. One of them went up for bid two Sundays ago at a local (90 min. away) auction house, and i had offered the winning bid. It came with a K/L frame Crimson Trace laser grip, it was swapped for some VZs.
Should make for a great woods carry gun around here since bobcats and coyotes are about it. I have been using a 4" 610 for woods carry, but 8 rounds of .357 get the nod. And i don't have to buy another holster either.

Previous posts about this model 627 mention that it was in production for a short period (2008 - ??)....anyone know how many were produced???

Yeah those are hard to find. I lucked out on GB a couple years ago. Sku 163357 got knocked out by the Pro Series which was $50 more and offered a moon clip cut cylinder, and a DX style interchangeable front sight. Why couldn't they just do that with the old round barrel?

If it is a standard catalog item you gotta figure Smith will want to build at least a couple of thousand a year. And if it was made in this configuration for only a couple of years.... that's not a whole lot of guns. I'd guess two to four thousand at most. If it was sold as a Stocking Dealer Special, then it could be as small as only a few hundred.

Good question. I have speed loaders that came with a 627 PC, but might swap the cylinder for one that is moon clip ready. A quick change sight would be very handy too.

Thanks for sharing that spec sheet.

Went to the archives (cardboard boxes full of gun related stuff) and found a 2008 catalog....and there it is.

If it's a 4" barrel, shouldn't it be called a 627-4?

No the -5 stands for how many bullets it will hold. Or could that possibly be the revision number. No that would just be crazy talk.

My 627 pro quickly became a favorite shooter. Love the moon clips and I easily popped on a F.O. front sight... you wanna swap barrels?

If i do any barrel swapping, the 4" will be going on a pre-lock 627PC, which is a 5" slab side. The slab side is not original to that gun, so i'd have no qualms about swapping barrels.
A moon clip ready cylinder swap will be much easier, and once the Hi-Viz green front sight is in, it's staying in.

Thanks, Kernel.
Moon clips absolutely destroy "speed loaders" and speed strips in regards to reload times from my opinion/usage. Do the moon clip cylinder, and enjoy reloads that mimic semi-auto reload times. I have a couple vintage 70's Smiths that I'm seriously considering having the cylinders milled for moon clips after a recent 625 purchase.
