Default Thoughts please......

Hi guys,

New here and as a new S&W owner was seeking thoughts about issues i have experienced with my new PC 460XVR 10.5".
I have used only Hornady 200gr FTX ammunition in the gun, just under 300 rounds to date.
The issues I have experienced are as follows.

1. The gun shoots EXTREMELY low - 30 clicks up on the rear sight to get on target at 50 metres. Tried mounting a scope and didnt have enough elevation adjustment to zero at 50 metres. Ended up having to remove fibre optic front sight and have replacement blade milled down to approx half the height of the fibre optic sight.

2. Cylinder unlocking and rotating backwards under recoil.

3. Brass getting stuck in cylinder after firing - lots of bulging and flattened primers.

4. Gun literally falling apart - rear sight completely detached once and keeps coming loose. Muzzle brake came loose, resulting in barrel shroud rattling / barrel no longer locked. Side plate screws keep coming loose.

Is this "normal"?

I would call S&W with a those complaints, Send the gun in and have them fix all the issues. When you sent them the gun make sure to send it with a list of your problems. Although this gun does have a lot of recoil it should not have these issues. Many have fired more rounds without problems.

Look first I have to admit I have no experience with a 460. But reading your post it struck me that 200 gr is a fairly light bullet for your gun. I shoot heavier bullets in my 44 mags. Try going to a heavier bullet, like maybe around 300 gr to start and I bet that will get you on target.

As for screws coming loose, that goes with shooting the big calibers. You have to get in the routine of tightening everything up after each shooting session. Some screws you can consider using purple loctite.

Your other problems, I don't have a solution for.

There are too many issues with that 460 for it to be the ammo. I have the 7.5"PC version and shoot handloaded 200gr Hornadys at 2000fps and NOTHING comes loose, no issues with the cylinder, it is a great shooting handgun. I do check the screws on mine after a range trip when cleaning, but so far no screws have loosened at all....so not even sure that is a valid issue!
Call S&W, the cylinder would be a BIG issue. You don't mess around with the 460!! If something isn't right that could be a huge issue!

I have the 8-3/8" .460 and it has a logged 507 rounds through it. I believe the first 100 rounds were all 200gr Hornady FTX, and since that time all my handloads have been 240gr Hornady XTP-Mag at velocities from 1800-2000 fps.

My revolver has exhibited zero problems and nothing whatsoever like you describe.

Call S&W and don't shoot it again until you have.

Thanks guys - it's been sent back, so hopefully everything gets sorted out.
I'm going to try 240gr XTP Mag projectiles at a lower velocity and see how it shoots with those compared to factory ammo when I get it back.

Second or third the suggestion you send it back to the good people at S&W. Even if you have to pay to get it returned to factory safe, it is worth it.

Default Normal?

Appears as if you have the proverbial "lemon." I'd write to Smith & Wesson, include your narrative as well as descriptive photographs. Good luck!
