Default Buying a 627 Pro tomorrow. Updated!

This is my first post on here. I currently own a Shield 9mm. Tomorrow I'm going to buy my first SW revolver.

I'm buying this gun from someone on an online forum. The gun is unfired but had to be sent back to the factory because of an issue with turn marks on the cylinder. The owner says he has paperwork and work order from the work at Smith and Wesson and the cylinder action is much smoother.

The pictures that I did see looks like the gun is in brand new condition like described by the owner minus the faint turn line on the cylinder. He says the barrel and sights are all straight.

My question is what should I be looking for that could raise any red flags? This will be my second revolver so I'm not completely new to the workings but in any case some of you with more knowledge can give me some insight on what I should be looking for.

I'm hoping this works out for me because it seems like a steal. Revolver with everything it came with, 19 moon clips loaded, and a holster for $800!

Thanks for any advice. I'm looking forward to becoming more involved with this forum in the future!

Be very careful! The only time I have been burned buying used guns is when the guns were relatively new.

Example: 3 years ago I was burning to buy a 3" 686, and there were no new ones to be found. So I bought a used one that was LNIB from an individual. It looked great when I examined it, but for the life of me, it wouldn't group when I shot it. The seller, of course didn't tell me that - he was selling it because he needed the money for "a new project".

Well I shot it a few more times over the course of the next couple years with the same result, and then put it away in the safe. Late this past winter, my interest in this revolver piqued again, so I took it to the range and it still wouldn't shoot. I had about had it at this point, so I e-mailed S&W, told customer service of my woes, and they mailed me a shipping label. Six weeks later I had it back, took it to the range, and it now groups. I am a happy camper. S&W had to replace the barrel due to defective rifling that I couldn't see. So some defects are very difficult to detect, especially in the excitement of a new gun purchase.

There are tips on buying a used revolver on this forum - use the search function to find the threads. You can do your best in examining the gun and most of the time it works out. But I am convinced that a high percentage of newer used guns are potential problems. If not, why are they being sold?

Good Luck!

627 pro you should be able to get new for 750-850 the performance center version for just over 1000.Does the holster and moon clips make it a great deal?

MAKE SURE you get a 3 day return policy with no questions asked! If you don't get that and can not have a knowledgable revolver guy inspect it in person - I'd PASS!

Cheapest I've found is $910 I live in CA. I think when you add up cost of holster, moon clips and rounds plus tax if I bought new I'm saving about $200+-.

Good choice. My 627 Pro is a great all around shooter. Although this gun I bought new from an online gun shop, I have bought lots of used S&W revolvers. Only had a minor problem with one. You can always send it in to S&W to be repaired if necessary.

That sounds like a good deal for California. I hope you get it and shoot it a lot.

Just don't understand having 627 and not shooting it.Hope ammo is factory new don't shoot anyone's reloads. Not saying used 627 and holster not worth 800 it may be.Understand the california part better get it while you can.I like the 3 day return suggestion also.Good luck on your decision hope to get one soon myself.

Ah, you and I are just the opposite. I got my 627 pro first, and then the shield. I will be curious to see how you like shooting the 627 after having your shield.
I am still learning how to shoot the shield and I have to tell you, I shoot my 627 better and much more consistently than the shield so far but that is me, someone who still new to gun and has lots to learn.
Hope it all works out for you.

Are you doing a face to face? If so, check it over carefully and look for problems such as a canted barrel or bad crown. You will have a turn line on the cylinder, as any S&W will drag the cylinder stop across the cylinder. So don't worry yourself about that. Also, check and see if the front sight looks canted while the barrel is mounted straight and not canted. There is another thread running her on a 5" 627PC gun that has that problem. Looks like the slot was milled canted or something.

My 627 Pro came with relatively few problems. The only real problem I encountered with it was a tendency to do light strikes in double action, which wouldn't touch off the round occasionally. I replaced the mainspring with a regular strength Wolff mainspring I already had and it is dead reliable now in double action.

And if you don't already do so, I would recommend that you reload for your 627 Pro. You can shoot a lot more for the same amount of money that way.

Love mine! Bought it new and paid just over $800 I think out the door. Only "problem" it had was some burrs on the muzzle. A couple hundred rounds later and they're all but gone.
You'll enjoy the gun. Can't comment if $800 used is a good price or not in California. I guess you should be happy they even let you have one there.

I would read this before you complete the deal. Revolver checkout: how to tell if a particular specimen is any good
If everything listed checks out, you should have a great gun.
Let us know how it turns out for you. Yes, there are a few horror stories but compared to the hundreds of S&W guns sold every day, I would say the odds of getting a good one are heavily in your favor.

Good luck today.

If it does not work out and you still have the itch, Bud's has a new one for $824.

Thanks for all of the advice. I will thoroughly look the revolver over. I'm hoping that any issues he found were fixed at the factory. Being that the only rounds fired were from the factory, it should make the inspection a little easier. I will update when I get back from meeting him.

Yes we are very lucky that our overlords have provided us with a list of firearms that are deemed "safe" for us to purchase. They even have been so kind to implement magazine restrictions and an "assault weapon" ban to keep the children safe.

Check carry up on every cylinder the performance center guns I have personallyseen examined in the last year were out of spec. I think I only have found 1 example that was correct, and that is after using my sized brass. Most non PC guns are good. Also check trigger return. I have found them to use woefully light springs.

Just got back from meeting the seller. The 627 was in great condition. No burrs, sights/barrel were straight, lock up with solid through all chambers. Nothing else funky or that stuck out as a potential issue. He also threw in a gallon freezer bag full of loaded moonclips and loaded 8rd speed strips. Also a brand new Desantis holster with thumb brake. Now I have to wait 10 days to pick it up.

Sounds like a really great deal especially considering you also got a quality holster and lots of ammo and moon clips included.

I owned a 627-5 Pro and liked the way it shot, but couldn't get past the lock hole, and sold it.
I currently don't own any S&W with the lock hole.
To me, the older, the better.

I would say with the extra ammo, moons and strips, and hoster that you got a good deal.
I bought a 627-5 Pro new. I did adjust the tension spring for a better trigger and put VZ grips on it replacing the ugly black stock grips. I still wish S&W would have polished the gun though. I can shoot this gun more accurately than my Python.
