What's This Front Sight on 586-3?
Anyone know what this front sight is on the 586-3? It's from an auction page. Supposed to be an adjustable sight. The rear looks like a typical adjustable factory sight. Why have an adjustable front and rear? Would they work OK together? It seems quite tall.

That's a four position front sight for silhouette competition at 4 ranges. Adjust the rear sight once, then click through the front 4 for range selection.

So it only adjusts elevation? Would it work OK for regular paper punching out to 25 yd?

As long as you remember to adjust the front sight between ranges. I have mine set for: 1) a 25 m 6 O'Clock hold for formal target shooting; 2) a dead on 25 meter hold; 3) a 10/15 meter hold and 4) a 50 meter hold.
To be honest I could get by with a non adjustable sight for all 4 uses, a one handed hold for formal targets using a 6 O'Clock sight is almost right on for a centre 2 handed hold if sighted in at 50 m. But that's what my 686 came with so I use it.
But I do regularly forget to change the sight, especially from the 25 down to the 15 and 10 meter stages.

Yes, it will work fine for that. Set the dial to #1 on the front sight (easy to remember). Put the rear sight a little off the bottom of it's movement so you have room to go up or down. Then sight in the elevation using the setscrew marked 1. When you get fairly close you can fine tune the elevation with the clicks on the rear sight.

It is a good option for competition to have the adjustable front sight. Just think the more you can adjust the more fine tuning you can do. Way back in the day King sight co. used to sell and/or install adjustable front sights as well as a few other goodies to upgrade your gun with. I think of them as a desirable option to have on your gun and can only increase value. Now as to real world use outside of competition, all my guns are "sighted in" then forgot about as that's how they stay. Have never changed any since.

Thanks all. It's a gun I'm fairly serious about buying. As long as the sight is not going to prove a liability to my shooting, I'm fine with it. Not concerned so much with any plus or minus effect on value.

It's a good sight.
Here's mine, it's on a 44, but same thing.
I had a green insert put into it and this revolver is hard chromed, it started out life as a 29-3.

I don't think this front sight will be a "liability" to your shooting. All the other shooters hanging around for a look might be. though. I see about one of these sights a year in these parts, so it is a scarce commodity. If the rest of the gun is right, do not hesitate to purchase. I think you will have almost an instant collectable.
