Default New to me S&W Model 64-6

Lately I've developed a fetish for revolvers again. I used to have several a few years ago, but then slowly sold them off when it was time to buy my house. Since then, I've been wanting to get back into revolvers but just never had the spare funds or when I did someone else would beat me to a smoking deal

While browsing Armslist yesterday saw an ad for a S&W Model 64-6 DOA with Hogue wraparound grips, 100 rounds of Speer +P 38 special, around 40 rounds of assorted reloads, Fobus holster, some snake shot, and some practice caps for $275. I emailed the guy, talked back and forth some to work out logistics and meet up today.

Gentleman I got it from had it for roughly 5 years, having purchased somewhere as a police turn in. I would love to figure out a way to find out which department. He was also a former gunsmith and advised me had polished all the internals, and let me pull the trigger a few times to make sure I was happy with it

For $275 I am very happy to add this to my collection. I did screw up one part of the Hogue grips taking them off, knocked the top flap loose but I was already planning on looking for a different set of grips. Just mad at myself for not being more careful, cause the Hogue grips are comfortable.

I did take it home and lightly polish her with some mother's. Other than that, I'm ready to take her to the range next chance I get

Congratulations! You did very well on your 64. You will certainly enjoy shooting it. Plenty of used stocks out there for sale. Bob

I loaded it up with snap caps to get used to the trigger and was very impressed with it. Probably won't be until a couple of weeks that I get to shoot this one. Definitely looking at either finding a nice set of used wood grips for it (just to keep the classic look) or may do something totally different

Definitely looks good sitting next to my 586, but makes me start wanting to look for a S&W 686

Might be New York. Think they might have been the department that ground off the hammer spur. Double action only for their officers..

I thought New York as well initially, but didn't they mark all of their revolvers? This one has no markings that I've seen anywhere besides normal factory markings

Default The 64....

Over the years I've owned 4 model 64s, dummy me I keep letting people talk me out of them so now all I have left is one of those 2" "Brinks" guns with a bobbed hammer.

I think the 64's are a true example of the poor department's workhorse pre-1990.

Great guns, and you can get them cheap enough to make it a nice project to upgrade with a new finish, maybe polish the moving parts, new grips, ect.

I love this gun, definitely has a good balance to it. I'm in the moral dilemma about whether I want to keep Hogue grips on it or put some wood grips on it. Decisions decisionss

Looks like a mighty fine shooter. Bet it's pretty sweet dumping some rounds off DA.

Here's a later model 64 NY-1 that the NYPD ordered. The s/n is also acid etched on the left side of the frame under the cylinder. S&W made them in 2", 3", and 4" versions. I've added the T-Grip, and the cat hairs aren't original either.

Those are Hogue Bantam grips. I like them, but they're a bear to get off. I've slipped a couple of old credit cards in between the frame and grip at the bottom of the frame and lifted the grip away from the frame. Once the gap is big enough you can pry the grip away from the frame, spread both sides of the grip, and remove them.

OP congrats on picking up a fine firearm. I love the DAO model 64's. I have had a NY-1 M64 for a few years. I just ordered two DAO M64's from SOG. One is going to my eldest son as a B-day present and the other will be waiting for the younger one to turn 21 in a few years.
