Default S&W 460XVR Range Report

Took my new 460 Performance Center out to the range a week ago with one of my good friends. We fired 3 boxes of Hornady 200gr, 1 box of Buffalo Bore 360 grain & 1 box of Hornady 240 gr 454 Casull. 100 rounds total. Right off the bat I can say it's a pleasure to shoot. I find it even more comfortable to shoot than my 629. I attest that to the grip. Recoil is a good bit more stout than hot .44 Magnum. Especially the Buffalo Bore. Not uncomfortable at all though. Concussion & muzzle flash from the Hornady's is intense We were at an indoor range & the first shot made the range go silent & other shooters came over to see what had made such tremendous noise. One gentleman several lanes down came up to say he could feel the concussion in his chest even! My nose was cleared out after 1 cylinder. It feels like a bit of a slap to the face when shooting. Even standing behind my friend you can feel each shot being fired. I moved my things & empty brass off the bench so the blast would stop throwing things about haha. The trigger is lovely & the best I've used on a revolver to date. I don't use double action much. Single action I put 5 shots into a 1.5 inch group at about 20 yards. First time out I shot it better than my 629, but I know with practice I can get even better. Im saving all my brass for reloading later in the year & will be getting equipment soon. Overall it's my favorite firearm purchase to date & I'm glad that I got a Peformance Center model. I plan to hunt with this revolver as well so I will be practicing as much as I can. If you're interested in a .460 or any X-Frame & like to shoot hot .44 Magnum or bigger I'd highly recommend one. Whatever I add next to my collection will probably be a PC as well. I'll attach some pics below. I'm the one wearing red.

Nice gun!! You might what to consider a speedloader for it. I got one from 5 star firearms and it is pretty awesome! They make loading the 460 so much quicker. I to am planning on hunting with my 460. What type of bullets are you planning on hunting with? Enjoy your gun!!

629classic.44, btw, the speed loaders are about 25 dollars. My brother, (known on here as S&W Magnum) and I both have the speed loaders from 5 star firearms. They also make pouches to hold the speedloaders. Btw, awesome .460!! You have the model that I want. I bought the 8.38" model before I knew the 7.5" one was coming out. So now I kind of am regretting not having the 7.5" model. I to am hoping this fall to go out and bag a nice buck with it.

Oh really? Didn't know about that actually! I'd like to pick up a speed loader. For hunting whitetail I'll probably try the Hornady 200 grainers & Buffalo Bore 275 grain Barnes XPB Hollow Points. For anything bigger I'm not sure yet. Thank you!! I'm really enjoying it

He actually commented above you 25 dollars is a good price. Thank you! The 8.38 model is a very nice gun still. Was very close to getting that before I saw this one behind the glass & I knew it was coming home with me. If you find a good deal on one & you feel the itch grab it! Me too this fall. Excited to see the real life performance.

Yeah, I know he did, lol. I really am liking the 250gr barnes .454 bullets. I am putting those bullets into a .460 case, and getting 2,100 feet per second or so out of them. But that is a max charge. The 250 gr barnes bullets open up a lot better than the 275 gr bullets. The 275gr barnes bullets take a lot of power, speed, and hard hitting, to get those to open up. The 250 gr barnes are a deep hollow point, and kind of a flat tipped bullet, not pointed like the 275gr barnes. But for me, I am only shooting with my .460 out to a max of 50 yards, the 250gr are going to be perfect. I am shooting open sights also. I mostly bought mine for brush stalking/and close range shots.

The 5 Star speed loaders are very well made. I picked up a couple for my 500mag a while back-friends laugh at how big the loaded package is.

2100 fps! Very nice. That I didn't know regarding the 250 vs 275 grainers. I think for me I'd be in the 50 yard range too. But I know the gun can go much further so after more time with it I'd like to try a 100+ yard shot. At that range maybe use a scope, but I prefer open sights.

Some of the hornady casings we reloaded the back of the case came off when we where extracting them. They are not the best for reloading. So we got starline nickel casings(it looks better than brass). Also I am using Winchester 230 gr bullets to practice with, and am going to be using barnes 250 gr bullets for hunting with.

Love my 460PC...Those 275 Barnes PBX boolits will take care of most

anything that walks.. Wyogoob, a fellow forum member killed a 1200

pound Bison with them earlier this year... Go to midwayusa and read

the reviews of this ammo.. ln Africa, giraffe, lion, wildabeast, killed..

Federal brand using this PBX and a 460PC are medicine for most ANYTHING

Oh really? Hm, maybe I shouldn't use the empty Hornady brass then & just order some Starline cases. 230 grainers sound like a good practice boolit

I read his post! Very impressive. I haven't checked out the Federal ammo with the 275 gr Barnes but I will now. The proof is out there showing these guns can take most anything

You could just use the hornady brass until they are no good any more and then buy the starline brass.

No problems with Hornady brass with me. Secret to loading Hornady 460

brass is using Hornady dies.. Using the wrong shell holder seems to

cause problems too. Just because 45Colt can be fired in your 460S&W

some people think they can reload 460 using their 45Colt dies... That

may work great 38Special and 357 Magnum.. lt WONT on 460S&W and

45Colt.. 460 and 45Colt need DIFFERENT dies and shell

holders...#46/460S&W--#32 for 45Colt dies.

Repeating myself. 460 dies/shell holder when loading 460S&W.

45Colt needs 45Colt dies/shell holder

I was using the hornady 460 dies when reloading the hornady brass. I just like the starline casings a lot better. So far no issues with the starline brass at all. I bought a box of 100 casings of starline nickel brass and reloaded 20 casings and kept reloading the same 20 casings. I am on like the 3rd reload on the 20 casings and so far they are still good.

Yeah, we have the hornady .460 dies, and the horandy .45 colt dies. We where just loading up magnum rounds, and the hornadys brass can not take to many reloads before they go. Ruggy can attest to that. Starline brass is the best you can get for the .460s. 629classic.44, 2,100 fps is a max charge, you feel the power that is for sure, haha. But if you are using them for hunting, you really are not going to be firing them much. Sight in, and hunt intill that one shot to bring down the big game animal you are hunting. Btw, with the hornady brass, there was sticky extraction, but with the starline nickel brass, no sticky extraction. And they where not light loads either, lol. The nickel helps with that, and looks great.

I see. I'll get Hornady dies. & work on reloads with that brass first. Starline nickel not long after. Being that it is a max charge I can imagine! Would love to try those. I won't do a max charge till I'm confident in what I'm doing. Sticky extraction doesn't surprise me. I got some sticky extraction occasionally from the factory loaded Hornady's lol.

Just to let you know, the starline nickel cases cost 70 dollars for a 100 count from Midway USA. So far we have yet to have sticky extraction with the nickel cases, knock on wood, lol. And they have been pretty powerful loads. Sending my .460 back to the factory soon, it is shooting wicked high, and light primer strikes. Hoping they fix it, and can get it back soon, so I can start blasting again, and get ready for deer season!!!

Hoping they fix it, and can get it back soon, so I can start blasting again, and get ready for deer season!!!
Not too bad. Glad to hear the cases hold up to multiple powerful loads! Ah that's unfortunate. I hope you get it back soon too. Deer season is coming!

How will you (and the others who use it) crimping on a 230gr bullet designed for 45ACP? There is no cannelure - right? The 460 needs a good roll crimp. The ACP bullets are designed for taper crimp.
What am I missing?

Well I guess they don't really get a crimp since they have a copper jacket.

AmStaff, they are not getting crimped very much at all. We do push the bullet a little farther in the case, and you can feel it trying to roll crimp it. Which it does not really show that it did any thing. We have shot over 80 of these handloads so far, with these bullets. They shoot fine, no problems at all. The only time it did not fire, and the bullet got stuck in the barrel, was because we used 38grs of H110 powder, when it called for 39gr minimum. So that one less grain made the bullet get stuck in the barrel. Ever since we upped it to 40grs of H-110 powder (medium load) is has worked quite well. Over 80 shots fired so far, with no problems. We bought these bullets, as they said 230gr, lead core, metal jacket, solid point, and the diameter was .451". So after we bought them people started saying they are made to be firing in a .45ACP. But we have shot 80 rounds so far, no issues. And they where cheap, lol
