Default My New 64-5!

Hey gang! Well I was walking around in a hospital in Southern Illinois a week or two ago, there for a family member who thank God is doing very well now. Anyway there were so Illinois Department of Correction (IDOC) officers there doing prison transportation. One of the folks they were guarding looked like Charles Manson crossed with Santa Claus wearing a canary yellow jumpsuit. It was very disturbing.

But anyway, those IDOC officers were carrying S&W Model 64 revolvers! I was very surprised, and happy to see them still using a trusty .38 for the job. Illinois is very poor and probably doesn't want to buy them modern semi-autos LOL! But I don't think they're really needed for the work these guys are doing. I think their 64s are fine for the job!

Well sitting in the waiting room, I was inspired to go on one of the auction sites on my phone. Long story short, for $265 I managed to get this:

It's a 64-5 that was a police trade in! What a peach, and for $265?? It was a no brainer! With revolver in hand today at my dealer's, I'll have to say the condition is better than I expected even after looking at the pictures online. Clean bore and chambers, lockup and timing are spot on, 0 end shake, carry up is perfect, no push off, VERY crisp single action and a smooth double action for sure! Cylinder gap is .006-.007, I'll take it, just fine for a fighting revolver. I have some accessories there to make a "security rig" as it were. The holster matches the type being worn by the COs. The gun wears classic Pachmayr gripper grips, I love them and won't be changing them.

I am cleaning it up right now, it appears to have been very well taken care of. I have a 64-6 that is a Brink's security trade in gun that has a factory DAO hammer. I think I like this 64 even more!!

I am taking it to the range tomorrow and will post pictures. I think this was a great buy at this price and just what a cool gun, I love these 64s, very straightforward and simple, yet effective.

Take care all!

-Jay

PS: The serial number is BEJ96**. If any of you fellers could give me the date of production, I'd greatly appreciate that!

Damn - that was a steal! I picked up a similar deal last year and found a 3-inch barrel for it. Great revolver and good set up for your photo scene!

Edited to add: Quite a surprise to see Illinois still using them. I carried one when I worked for AZ DOC back in '96 - although they were all beaters. Good thing I never had to use it!!

Very cool! Seems the 64s are among the easiest to find really good deals on. When I saw the "buy it now" of $265, I had to buy it and I'm glad I did! I just got done doing a thorough cleaning and everything checks out perfectly, bore is pristine and this revolver has many decades of service still left in it!!

Great buy!

I just purchased my first S&W Model 64-6 the other week for $275, that included 100 rounds of Speer +P, as well as some reloads. I was tickled pink with it, though I haven't had an opportunity to shoot it yet.

All I've done is clean and polish up mine. Granted, was already in great shape when I got it. Now I want another, my LGS has a 64-3 for $499 but I've been spoiled by sub 300 price

MY 64-3 does nightstand duty! This was a trade for a Ruger P89. We were both happy! Bob

Shot great! I was the one who wasn't that good with it! I haven't shot revolver in a couple years, going to have to get used to them again, but everything went super at the range!

Default You got a fine revolver there

I like fixed sight K frames, got seven of them. With the proper stocks and load that gun can fit most anyone and accomplish most any task.

That was one screaming deal!! I paid $399 for my 64-5 and thought that was good but you certainly bested me with that complete package. Mine is a lowly dept. Of corrections piece and shoots like a dream. Very easy to clean up any scratches if you don't mind a little polish. Some guys hate the polished up look but I like it with Altamonts. Enjoy

I carried one just like it when I worked at Converse College. I was the only campus safety officer that provided his own firearm. I never felt outgunned, or unarmed

That is an unbelievably low price!

A vague approximation: SCSW2 shows BEK as Oct 89, BEN as Nov 89,BEP as Dec 89. Maybe this helps?

My 2 casino 64s are a -5 and a -6. Both were unfired with a great deal of hardened lube in the action. This apparently passed for maintenance! With the action scrubbed out, they are the sweetest and smoothest DAs I own.

Is that Safariland Model 29 holster lined? I have one just like it, green suede lined, and carried a Model 64, then a Model 66 in it for a couple of decades. Almost no finish wear to the guns, and they 're very stylish, useful holsters.

I've seen them used for $40 at shows.

How do you like the Beretta M-92S? Did you change the locking block for the current version?
