Default Is the new 66 2.75" good to go?

Hello, I am hoping to hear back from some owners. I posted a little while back asking about a 3" 686 as a carry gun. However, I have been reading up some on the new 66 and it looks like a nice carry option.

However, I have also read posts from more than 1 member about issues with the forcing cone/lead spitting. Has anyone gotten one without this issue? I was originally looking at the 686 since it is a little more robust, but the new changes seem like the 66 will hold up pretty well.

Unfortunately none of the local shops have any in stock so I will more than likely have to order online. I did find a 4" model 66 and really liked the way it felt in my hand. I hate to say it but it almost felt more natural than my 4" 686 plus.

I just am trying to figure out which one to go for. This would be for a carry gun that would share holster time with my 1911s when out and about as well as when I'm camping with my family.

Thanks for any input.

Default M66-8 snubbie

Seems like some of the snubbies have had an incorrectly cut/sized forcing cones. You might want to scrutinize that if you find one locally.

Take a look at this thread for more info on that:
Issues with my 66-8 2.75"

Otherwise it's a great feeling & shooting revolver. I've got several hundred rounds thru mine with no additional issues.

I have had a 2.75" 66-8 for 3 months. I have shot it a ton. I love it. I also have a 3" 66-2, a 3" 65-3, a 3" 686-6 Plus, and a 3" GP 100. The new 66-8 is right there with them. I particularly like the new detent lock-up at the crane. The 2-piece barrel gives it a great look. Seriously, this was a great purchase.

I think it's an improvement over the old ball detent lock too.

I don't have a picture of my 66-8 snubbie's ball detent lock but it's the same as on the new M69 snubbie.

I purchased one locally about a month ago. I checked my forcing cone last night and it looks fine. Everything looks great and it shoots great.

I have had a 66-8 with the 2.75" barrel now for about 6 weeks. Great, accurate weapon with no problems. I would highly recommend it!!

If S&W's gotten the production issue corrected with the forcing cones, it's not a bad gun.
The sample here, even with a bad cone, was more accurate than my minty older 66 snub.

Cool !! That's a sweet looking pistol, I didn't realize that they finally put out this smaller version.
Last year, I traded into, and then out of, one of the 4" versions of the new 66, and I liked it alot. I wouldn't shy away from another if one fell my way.
But, I did feel like the bead-blasted/satin finish looked kinda "cheap", I'd be tempted to do a high polish on it with some Mother's Mag, but after doing that to a little J-framed Model 60 Ladysmith a while back, I'm not sure if I'd want to jump into that on an even larger pistol.

Out of 5 test loads, new shot tighter best 5-shot 25-yard groups with 3 of those than the older snub did.
The other two were very close.

It is good to go, but for me I go a little farther on all my guns, so my new 66 is at the Gunsmith right now, geting new springs and a chamfer on the barrel muzzel, he said it all looks great and the tune up will just make better, my muzzlel has a 11 degree crown, but the bore had a wire edge that can spoil the accuracy of a gun, so a 45 degree chamfer witll take care of that, and being a short barrel, 3" revolver with a .008 cylinder to forcing cone gap, I want everything I can do to make this gun accurate as possible...

Default 66-8 target

I'm happy with the accuracy of mine after my tinkering (chamfered the muzzle, re-cut/polished the FC, & trigger job = 3# SA).

The short rear blade (.108" tall), & it's notch's shallow depth (.058"), make fine alignment a little hard for bullseye shooting with the .235" tall front sight but more that adequate for SD purposes.

I'd prefer a white outline rear blade, and the front orange is slightly more subdued than on my older version.
Older has better sights as a defensive carry gun, they tend to jump out more in a hurry.
