Default Mdl 586-5 L Comp Question on date of manufacture (with pic)

Is there a good source to find out the date of manufacture of a S&W Mdl 586-5 L Comp, serial number CLC XXXX? My guess is around 1999, based on looking into other threads on this forum and the SCSW 4th Edition.

The revolver does not have a box, but does have a set of Craig Spegel large boot grips, signed and dated 2009. I added the old style thumbpiece. Overall, it is slightly holster-worn but looks to be in good shape. The trigger is excellent.

I also looked at my 4th edition and it's not precise regarding the "CLC" prefixed 586L Comp. It does indicate these Performance Center models were made in 2000, 2004, and 2009 and the S/Ns may have all begun with
"CLC".

From chapter 9:
"Model 586 L Comp Caliber – .357 Magnum, Full lug 3" Ported barrel with Tritium Dot front night sight and Micrometer click rear sight, Altamont Rosewood grips, 7-shot cylinder recessed for moon clips, Black finish, Shipped with locking Aluminum case and Master Trigger Gun Lock- Offered by Camfour Dist. First Blue finish revolver in 7-shot offered by S& W. 37.5oz CLCxxxx serial prefix, 2000 and 2004...

Product codes:
170170 3" 7-shot w/ Moon Clips 2000
170248 3" 7-shot 2004
170317FC 3" 7-shot 2009

Supica, Jim; Nahas, Richard. Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson (Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson)"

In the appendices for serial numbers, "CLC" is specifically listed as being used for revolvers being made in the year 2000.

I vote for 2000.

Thanks for the additional info, based on the closer look at the 4th Edition. The lack of the IL is a clue, too; I think that started in 2001. So 2000 as the year of manufacture makes sense.

I'm wondering about the thumb piece. It's no the pc version or the newer version but the older original version.

Yes -- I took the new-style thumbpiece off and substituted an old-style thumbpiece.

I prefer the appearance of the old-style thumbpiece.

And I've always thought (with no empirical data to back me up) that the slanted-face new-style thumbpiece when pushed puts downward or sideways pressure on the bolt, whereas the old-style thumbpiece directs thumb pressure in line with the bolt's intended travel. Anyway, I just like the old style.

Your revolver was made in 2000 as the rest of the 199 of them with CLC prefix and all were prelock and dash 5. These are extremely tough and rare guns to come across with only a total of 200 made. Then as others mentioned the rest of the runs Smith Wesson did had the internal lock and are dash 7's. Congrats on the pick up, you will love it and a revolver that will continue to climb in value.

Good taste! I feel similarly and assumed most revolver people would too but it is amazing (to me) that most seem to like the new style more!

Great find, and I like what you did with the thumb piece. I have a new, meaning month old 586 L-comp and am impressed with it. I suspect your trigger is better though.

Thanks for the info! This one is near the end of the serial number range, e.g., close to #200.

I shot it today -- what a trigger!

I've only ever seen the CLC s/n prefix used on the 170170. I think it was reserved for just that one variation. It was an "out-of-time" prefix, so it doesn't follow the normal alphabetical and chronological date sequence.

I've seen them in their box with the date code, and those 170170 PowerPorts shipped in.....

January of 2000.

Thanks!

Other than the slight holster wear, it seems good all around - no buggered screws, solid carry up, good cylinder gap, very minimal end shake, great (smooth) lands and groves, good forcing cone.

It might be a bit "collectible" but I intend to shoot it a lot.
