Default Any opinions on the 657?

I just traded into a 6" model (no dash) this weekend. Seems to be unfired but I hope to fix that condition! I have never shot either the 57 or 657. I have seen a few 57s but this is the only 657 I've seen in this area. Just looking for opinions. I may have over traded for it but I've done worse too.

I understand the cartridge. I reload and cast for it. I can make the round about anything I want and can do it very cheaply. I too have several other .41s. I'm really just looking for opinions specifically on the Model 657.

They are awesome! I have a 657 in 3" and a 58 former SAPD gun. You did well, Grasshopper...

Congratulations

I love all 41 Magnums, carbon steel, stainless steel, Titanium or Scandium They just all appeal to me.

Here is a 10+ year old group photo and more

I have loved this cartridge since I accidentally bought my nickel 57 back in the 80s

The .41 Magnum round is an outstanding cartridge and seldom gets the credit it deserves. I personally own, reload and shoot a few firearms chambered in the mighty .41 including several S&W's, a Freedom Arms M97, and a Marlin Model 1894FG lever gun.....all a hoot to shoot!!

You did well trading into that one, now get out there and shoot it, I guarantee you will be adding more .41's to your stable in the near future!!

I think the only rub is that the ammo is hard to find in some places and there isn't much variety.

A reloading manual I had said the .41's had uniform cylinder throat and bore specs and the guns tend to be quite accurate.
Save that photo. We'll surely have another bear gun topic soon and it'll fit right in.

I think you have to handload to get milder, everyday ammo.

I am sure that you will like it. The Remington 210gr JSP is pretty stout for the first time, but it brings a smile to my face every time

You will find more 41 mag online than likely anywhere else. I reload, so I have a replenish-able supply at hand.

My favorite powder is sr4756, but I am told that it was discontinued. If you check in over at the unofficial 58 club, several members have posted some of their own recipes for the 41 mag.

That 657 you have is a real looker! Please go out and dirty it up some so that mine won't be ashamed to show themselves in public

Now, that is a 41 Magnum collection.

OK - Here is my take- I made one of the worst firearm related mistakes in my youth, I let a 4" 657 slip from my hands (traded it for a 4x4 Silverado Suburban, and that was more than 20 years ago).

I just got my grubby mitts on another 4" 657 and won't be letting it go anytime soon. I have several others 3", 4" Mountain Gun, several 58's, and a Marlin 1894FG.

I have owned 6" 657 and it was superbly accurate.....I bought it here on the forum from another gentleman and later passed it on to another 41 Mag lover.

Your 657 will serve you well, and it is a great looker too!

You'll enjoy that one. I really like my S&W 41 Magnums. I've never shot one I didn't like. I loaded up a bunch earlier this year. So, I've actually been neglecting my 44s lately.

It did take a bit to get used to the black front sights that are present on most 657s.

I too "over traded" for a 6" 657 recently. Replaced one I had 20 years ago. The recent one shoots just like the old one.... And that means it shoots AMAZING! I really like the 6" 657 and bet you will too. I've used mine for some lead loads and they shoot fine, but usually run 210 jacketed. AA#9 is my powder of choice for this one.

Not going to let another one get away.

Dan

Well, if I wanted a .41 Magnum, a six-inch M-657 would be my choice. Does that help?

I just feel that a M-629 .44 is a better choice. But I no longer reload and have to rely on factory ammo and want to find it when needed.

The .41 will probably kill anything you should be shooting with a .44 Magnum, though.

The 41magnum isn't the red headed step child. There are more 41 magnum owners than we think out there. I wanted a 41 magnum for four decades. I wanted the ruger Redhawk but they were no longer manufactured. The used ones were hard to find. I got a m58/m57 it satisfied my hunger for a Redhawk but not for long. I shot the m58 and what a fine handling revolver it is. The longer barrels should be even better handling.

The 41 magnum and 44 magnum they say have the same stopping power from the guys who hunt with both. The 41 magnum has a tad more penetration.

I think no magnum owner should be without a 41 magnum. How can you not own all three the 357mag, the 41mag and the 44mag? You gots to own all three.
