Default 65-5 Hunter Smith 3" **Letter added 9/1/17**

I picked up this 3" 65-5 Hunter Smith yesterday. It is mentioned as a variant in the SCSW, but I was only able to locate a few mentions here on the forum. The product code does not agree with what is published in the SCSW.

The seller's photos are better than my efforts.

Any experience with this model?

Thanks.

Matt

Think of it as a version of the Ladysmith for those guys that didn't want to carry a revolver marked Lady. Nice revolver
a bit scarce.

Congrats on getting a good carry gun, and let be the first to say if you ever decided to let it go I would try to adopt it.

Congratulations on your 3" 65! I had a -3, and traded it off. Maybe I was hasty. Enjoy your 65! Bob

I like the shrouded ejector rod. Is that the only difference in the "hunter" and standard model 65?

Cool gun, first one I have seen. Is is marked (etched, stamped) "Hunter" anywhere on the gun?

This was made in the era of very shallow laser-etched markings. I think if you breathed on the barrel from a close distance and rubbed on it with a tissue you'd remove the lettering on the left side . Enjoy!

Great find, the barrel shroud is cool as well as the wide smooth trigger(my favorite), all the lady smith has but no names, I checked my 65-5 3" and notice the smith logo is on the other side on mine? Question, can you use either bathroom when your carrying because of the non gender model?

Thanks for the comments.

There is no "Hunter Smith" marking. The S&W trademark on the sideplate and "Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum" on the left side of the barrel are laser etched. The four lines on the right side of the frame are the only roll marks.

That's the first one of that "variation" I've seen.

Very cool.

Like others that is the only one I've ever seen...didn't know they even made it. Never say never with S&W! Great find.

I would have broke two fingers and a thumb trying to get my wallet out. Love the shrouded ejector. Interest though, in that generally when I think of a Hunter model gun I think of one with adjustable sights. Either way as other have said - I would have been all over that one. Enjoy!!!

A 102610 Hunter Smith. First one I've seen (or heard of). Too cool. Thanks for sharing it with the forum.

I would love to have a mint 3" model 65. I don't like adjustable sights.

Nice find!

While I don't have a 65, I do have 3" inch Model 66 and a new 586 L-comp. The 3" barrel balances so well for me that it's a favorite. One thing I noticed, it seems like the 3" 66 doesn't like 125 grain bullets.

I'm going to get a letter on this one.

I'm amazed that it lasted two days after it was posted on Armslist. It first appeared Saturday morning and the shop was closed by the time I arrived early in the afternoon. They did not return my call until after 1 p.m. on Monday and we worked out a deal on the phone. It was definitely worth the 5 hour round trip (twice).

Nice find!!

Have never seen the box before that says "Hunter" on it but have seen 2-3 of the non-Ladysmith marked guns like the one here...

One of those guns that Smith should have made a few more of...

I received my letter today. The @#$% mailman wadded it up and left it hanging out of the mailbox door in the rain.

Pretty cool to have one from a relatively small production run.

Be careful shooting the lighter bullets from a Model 66 that has the flat at 6 o'clock on the forcing cone. There's more than a few reports of cracked forcing cones. There are no replacement 3" barrels to be found from any source.

I shoot only 158gr LSWC

Cool letter, sorry it got wrinkled...

Many S & W revolvers intended for the export market were designated as "Target" or "Hunter", there not being a widespread right of self-defense with firearms there. The S & W Street Sweeper never sold well across the pond....

That is a cool setup I have a 3" 65-5 with box and goodies. I'll happily trade you mine for yours. Never heard of a hunter smith and probably will never see one again.

Thanks for the offer. I'd better keep it. Hate to burden someone else with something so unpopular that they made so few.
